It struck me last night watching "Delia through the decades" on TV that I've always had a bit of a crush on Delia Smith.

Whilst not wanting this thread to go down any sordid or sexist routes, I was wondering what secret crushes shipmates would admit to.

WW. This is going off at a tangent but your posting has triggered something I've never understood. Do you know why is it some gay men have crushes on Judy Garland (as Dorothy) and Doris Day for example?

[tangent]That has puzzled me for a long time, neither have ever particularly appealed to me.

[Doubtless I will now be drummed out of the all the local gay venues as a heretic!]

[Hot and Hormonal] I have a secret crush on Howie Mandel [Hot and Hormonal] The one time I confessed this to someone she didn't stop laughing for the rest of the evening and she still likes to joke about me being "hot for Howie". [Hot and Hormonal]

I also have a small thing for Eddie Izzard, but mostly my crushes are on fictional characters (it's not Colin Firth, it's Mr Darcy as Firth portrays him; it's not Johnny Depp, who I could take or leave, it's Jack Sparrow, and so on).

My husband has pointed out that all these people are rather odd in some way and often rather narcissistic. [Paranoid]

For a long time post-LOTR I had a secret crush on Orlando Bloom (yes, I know, I know). I think it was the pointy ears that did it. I must have been quite badly smitten, because at the time I didn't even find it embarrassing.

I thought for the benefit of non UK reidents I should put a link to a photo of Delia. There are loads if you Google her, but this link has a double crush benefit! (Delia and Kate Bush)

OMG, Prettyfly, I've got an anti-crush on Howie Mandel. I literally have to turn the channel when I catch him on anything but the odd re-run of St. Elsewhere, which I liked.

I used to be an ardent X-Phile and adored David Duchovny as Fox Mulder. I still think he is a cutey and try and catch him when he appears on talk shows.

Posted by tessaB (# 8533) on :

Fox Mulder definately.
Neo is a real crush, not Keanu Reeves, just the character. Oh and of course Jack Sparrow. Odd isn't is that it is so often the character not the actor.

I once had a boss named Leo who was very good-looking. I had a secret crush on him.

This may be why I appreciate the postings of a certain Shipmate, even though I know that that's not his real name and he probably looks nowhere like my old boss.

I have a list.
1)Phillip Glenister as Gene Hunt. Such ill-manners, loud brash, drunkard yet tenderness and loving at the same time. Those blue eyes and that masculine face. YOWZA.
2)Robert Downey, Jr. as Sherlock Holmes. That wit, brains and brawn...sharp, dark piercing eyes. Such intensity. Detective, come inspect me now!
3)Kevin James as Paul Paul Blart. Such pretty eyes and makes me laugh, plus he can kick some butt. The Segway PT looks cool to me. I know I am weird but hey.
4) Secret guy-I-know-through-church. Nerd, quirky, sensitive very bold guy, came right up to me and told me his life story. I want so badly to rip off his...read his bible with him. *sigh*

Not such a secret crush but definitely an embarrassing one - Phillip Schofield. Especially since he stopped dyeing his hair and has gone beautifully grey! He was my first crush as a little girl and has stayed with me ever since [Big Grin]

My first was (blush) Gil Gerard, from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.

In my defence, I was about 9 at the time.

My first real, send-the-actor-a-birthday-card crush was Lee Curreri, who played Bruno in Fame. Strangely enough, a few hundred miles away a certain Hugal was having similar feelings for Valerie Landsburg who played Doris. Funny old world.

Sarah-Jane Smith, Dr Who, 1974-1976 - strangely enough, just covering the period I was gearing up for adolescence. And dammit, she's still hot 30 years later just as I'm gearing up for my mid-life crisis.

My male friends and brothers think she is ugly, with a terrible voice; but I have a crush on (Australian Deputy Prime Minister) Julia Gillard. This is not new but started 12 or so years ago when I first saw her on a late night news programme. My partner knows and is not jealous or worried (there are resemblances).

Purple Daisy - don't worry. I'm with you on Philip Schofield (altho it's not widely known!) Whereas my Alan Rickman "Thing" is.

I'm afraid I had a bit of a (really I can't explain it at all, because it wasn't due to physical attraction) Thing for Baldrick in Blackadders 2 & 4. Now that really is wierd.

Years and years ago when I was a little lad just becoming aware of such things my first serious celebrity crush was on Barry Curtis who played Ricky North in Champion the Wonder Horse. Have you done anything? If not, why not give it a go- needs courage but what have you got to lose?
If someone owned up to having a secret thing about me, even if I wasn't interested (as I wouldn't be, being very happily attached), I might be a bit embarrassed but I'd probably also be very flattered.

Lorraine Kelly.

To me she is the embodiment of the not-too-common phenomenon of the friend's really nice mum that you fancied in your teenage years. Sort of like Perry's feelings towards Mrs Paterson (both of Harry Enfield's Kevin & Perry)

My wife is aware of this crush, but I can't recall if I explained the above rationale. Plus I like her accent.

Not a crush in a sexual sense, but I love Lorraine Kelly, I think she must be a great entertaining friend to have. She is the person that I would most like to have lunch with.

I suppose as I started this thread off I should fess up to various crushes over the years. So by way of confession being good for the soul, in no particular order:

Daphne from Scooby Doo
Sarah Greene (one time Blue Peter presenter)
Claire Grogan (lead singer with Altered Images)
Wonder Woman (not fussed about Linda Carter though)
Nigella Lawson
Anna Chancellor ("Duckface" in Four Weddings)
Fiona Bruce
And as others have mentioned opera singers Leslie Garrett.

There I feel so much better for sharing!

Does anyone know a good therapist?

I had nearly all of my crushes confined to Friday night television, but Enver Gjokaj and Tahmoh Penikett will be off the air in another week and they've moved Matt Bomer to Tuesdays starting next week. But I think he'll go good with the Michael Weatherly and Mark Harmon crushes. And that’s why you should never have the crush conversation in a coed group. (I was always amazed in college at how the otherwise perfectly pleasant female friends I had would suddenly accuse other women of being brainless or cokeheads whenever I mentioned that they were attractive). Oh yes...the intellectualism....the vulnerability...the big brown eyes...swoon (the big hair...not so good). I was a teenager in the 90s and my Fox-crush seems to fixed the type of man I like forever. My mother, who grew up in the 60s and was a bit of a Trekkie, always claimed to have had a teenage crush on Spock. My uncle reckoned that this was all hindsight and she really dug Capt. Kirk.

Okay, this is an embarrassing one, because it means admitting that not only am I obsessed with a soap opera, but the one I am obsessed with is the German equivalent of Neighbours. Called Verbotene Liebe ('Forbidden Love'), it is filled as you would expect with the beautiful and the young. I got hooked in Germany and now keep up via Youtube.

Anyway, there is this gay couple on the show, called Olli and Christian, and they've been going strong two years now, and the story's been really well done, esp. at the beginning, we've been cheering them on as Christian won the boxing championship at the same time as battling prejudice, and they are two unfeasably hot men, incredible kissers, and the one I like in particular is far too young for me of course, and ... About twenty years ago, there was a comedy series about a man who could not make up his mind whether to stay with his wife or run off with his mistress. Jane Asher played his wife, and Felicity Kendal the mistress. Not a dilemma that comes the way of most of us.

It perhaps says something about me that I've no recollection at all as to who played the husband.

Y'know, Ed Norton Jr. strikes me as someone I could crush on, if I put in the effort.

My long-time celebrity crush has been Dwight Schultz-- this guy. But, in bingeing on a Dr. Who Marathon recently, I realised David Tennant kind of reminds me of him. Hopefully my mooning wasn't obvious.

Celebrity crushes, Guilty Secret variety-- I don't know what the hell it is, except he's kind of a laid-back wiseass, but every time I see Snoop Dogg in a non-singing capacity (for instance, when he was a presenter at the Friar's Club Roast for Flavor Flav) I find myself suddenly accessing my inner ho. Robert Redford, I still love ever wrinkle on his face. He lives part of the year not far from us, but I have yet to have a sighting, while others have. One 20 year old told me he said, "Good Morning," to her and her heart skipped a beat. Guess it just not only us old ladies who still find him sexy.

James Franco, especially in Freaks and Geeks, makes me giggle and blush like a schoolgirl.

And if he and I were both single, I would move to New York and stalk Jon Stewart.

Sean Connery, although that's never been a secret. [Smile] Alton Brown isn't hard on the eyeballs, either.

Morgan Freeman's voice. As one review of "March of the Penguins" said, he could keep me fascinated reading the phone book. And I'd say the same for James Earl Jones.

For fictional characters, I have a strange fascination for Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) as played by Robert Downey Jr. Downey doesn't normally do much for me, and if I had to really be around somebody as conceited as Tony Stark I'd be tempted to commit murder, but on screen... [Axe murder]

I started my 'Secret Crush' career young, with Mr Spock and David McCallum as Ilya Kuriakin in the Man from U.N.C.L.E. I spent ages trying to do the Vulcan salute and trying to say Ilya Kuriakin!
Then it was onto the swashbucklers, and Errol Flynn - and I've not grown out of that one yet. (Orlando Bloom did a pretty good imitation of Errol Flynn in Pirates of the Caribbean, even down to the little 'tache).
More recently, I've discovered Antonio Banderas.

Hardwood floors. Daaaaammmn. [Hot and Hormonal]

Flavor Flav is gifted with an admirable ability to laugh at himself. And I mean, piss- ya- damn-pants laugh. Which makes one wonder if most of what he does is geared toward that purpose. Anyway, this quality seemed to really egg the roasters on.

In any case, it was gratifying to see four or five nervous whitefolk Friar's club members delicately edge around the race issue, then watch Snoop mount the podium, flash a warm, twinkly-eyed smile, and casually unload about a dozen dozens on Flav. Masterful.

What an interesting read over my lunchtime sarnie!

Here goes a few as I think of them:

Johnny Depp in most things, especially Capt Jack Sparrow, and also the dishevelled Mort in Secret Window [another character asks if Mort is ok : ‘you don’t look so hot...’ --- ack! Are you insane?? Any hotter and Mort would melt the screen...]

Aidan Turner (phwoar)– currently in Being Human, also played Rossetti in Carry on up the Easel..oops.. Desperate Romantics

Faith in Buffy - I’m straight but would leave home for Faith (another phwoar!)
and Angel, of course

Sawyer & Desmond in LOST

Richard Armitage as Guy of Gisborne – also a beautiful voice

The gorgeous, velvet voices of James Mason; Alan Rickman; Morgan Freeman

...and another vote for Alfred Molina

If not, I can still remember (about 25 years later) being hit by a major crush on the A&E doctor I saw when I broke my arm aged about 14!

As for the celebrity kind though - nothing new (and also the characters mainly) -
Jack Sparrow
David Tennant's Doctor Who (when he's being 'English' - yes I know he's from Gallifrey!)
Colin Firth's Mr. Darcy
John Hannah - in anything but it started with 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'. (Also proving I'm not biased against the Scottish accent!)

No any crushes will do. I started the ball rolling with celebs as most people will see the fascination - or not! But if we're talking other crushes from my teen years there was:

Tricia,
Suzanne (I'd walk the dog past her house every evening hoping that she'd be around)
Louise (who I was about to ask out on a date then she moved away with her parents)
Katherine (who I found out at a school reunion 30 years later was always wondering when I'd ask her out!)

Hello Benny D,

Fag hags are women who love the company of gay men and who cultivate close friendships with them, I have invented the reverse term for those gay men who love the company of women. I don't know if it'll take.
Sometimes - but not always - the term fag hag is a bit pejorative and the assumption is these gals can't get a 'real' man. Which I think is patronising nonsense, we just get on really well.
Hope this explanation has helped.
