So, it is once again that time of year when our thoughts turn to the future and the natural morbid curiosity which lies within us all idly begins to wonder who's going to kick the bucket in the next twelve months.
And seeing as this is the Circus, we shall make a game out of it . So, I am pleased to announce the 2010 Ship of Fools Celebrity Death Pool.
For the uninitiated, the gist of it is that you have to pick who is going to die in the next calendar year. If one of your choices does pop their clogs, you are awarded points as explained below. The winner is the person with the most points. The deadline for posting your list is the end of this year (which we shall take to be 23.59 GMT on December 31st, 2009) and if you miss this deadline you will not be able to take any further part.
So, have fun, think carefully, and read the rules below!
- You must pick 13 well-known people whom you think will shuffle off this mortal coil in 2010. That is, starting from 00.01 GMT on January 1st 2010 and ending at 23.59 GMT on December 31st 2010.
- The definition of well-known is that their deaths will be reported by at least one major news outlet. Examples outlets include The Guardian, CNN, IMDB, or CNNSI.
- Points are awarded according to the following formula: the celebrity's age at the time of death subtracted from 100. For example, if the person you choose dies at the age of 67, you will earn 33 points.
- You earn 50 bonus points if the death occurs in such a way as to clearly prove the existence of God (for example, if some doofus dies from burns after trying to torch a church).
- You cannot choose anyone under the age of 18.
- You can choose an inmate scheduled to be executed, but you only earn points if the person dies by some means other than the state-sponsored execution. For example, a shiv in the stomach counts, lethal injection does not.
- You are disqualified if you contribute in any way to the death of one of your chosen candidates. The one exception is if you are a police officer or member of the armed services and kill someone in the line of duty.
- All entries must be submitted on this thread no later than 23.59 GMT on December 31st 2009. No entries will be accepted after this time. You may however make changes to your list up until this time, but only if someone pops their clogs before the beginning of the year or you've put someone in twice.
There are also a couple of extraneous categories:
Inside Track with the Grim Reaper Award: person who picks the first death of 2010.
Quantity Not Quality Award: person who picks the most people who croak in 2010, regardless of their points value.
This is now the 7th time we have done this, and each time someone questions the merits of what we are doing. Please bear in mind:
- This is only a game
- These are not death "Wish Lists" - You choose who you think might die, not who you want to die.
- The Circus is the place for games, not discussion, so debating the rights and wrongs of what we are doing should be done somewhere else.
Have fun, and remember to post your selection.

Circus Host
P.S. Those of you who are eagle-eyed about the times posted might wonder what happens to someone who dies exactly on the stroke of midnight between 2009 and 2010. I say that's so unlikely that they should count for both years.

My list for this year is identical with last year as if I change a name the person I miss out will doubtless pop their clogs in the early hours of New Year's Day and I will be upset!
1. Murdoch of Twisted News Corp.
2. General Than Shwe, leader of the military government in Burma.
3. L K Advani - Indian politician and promoter of hatred and communal violence.
4. Thatcher, Margaret Hilda the truly appalling.
5. Jyoti Basu - Bengali communist politician and former Chief Minister.
6. Jean Marie LePen, French politician and promoter of hatred and communal violence.
7. Robert Mugabe, the ruination of Zimbabwe.
8. Bal Thackeray - another promoter of hatred and communal violence in India, and admirer of Hitler.
9. Pat Robertson - alleged Christian.
10. Ian Paisley - another alleged Christian and promoter of hatred and communal violence in Ireland this time.
11. John McCain - I reckon that the election campaign did nothing to add to his health.
12. Gerry Adams - just to be fair.
13. Philip Mountbatten, of Greece, Denmark and Britain, husband of "Brenda".

p.s. it is my considered opinion that it would be only fair to grant a 50 point head start to the first person to post their list.

OK, first-time player. This could be interesting...
1. Margaret Thatcher, she of the Iron Handbag.
2. Amy Winehouse, drug-addled waste of space.
3. Cliff Richard, from the shock of not having a No1 this decade.
4. Robert Mugabe, Golden Asshat.
5. Gary Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, kiddy-fiddler extraordinaire.
6. Muhammed Ali, man who could punch a bit.
7. Fidel Castro, cigar afficionado.
8. Kim Jong-Il, North Korea's Glorious Leader.
9. Phil the Greek, otherwise known as the Duke of Edinburgh.
10. Pete Burns, ex-Dead or Alive singer and all round media whore.
11. Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, Lockerbie bomber
12. Nelson Mandela, terrorist or freedom fighter?
13. Ronnie Biggs, Great Train Robber no longer sunning himself in Brazil.
Do I get a 25 point headstart for being second...?!

Can I select people in a so called 'radio soap' in the UK? I am a member of a group who understands that The Archers is an account of a real, unholy and murderous community in the U.K. I want to select those members who are most annoying...the Vicar and his Hindu wife, the evil Vet and his even more wicked wife, their Demon child, the man currently in custody and his bitch wife, the Jail Bird Post Mistress...

Anyone mulling over there list might want to consider some advice from a previous winner. Age is no reliable guide to chance of death. The year I picked the 13 oldest people in the world (all aged 108+), 8 of them survived. Dodgy lifestyle is also unreliable, some people chainsmoke for years without keeling over. The best indicator is ill health, particularly cancer.
Phrases in the media give an indication. "At death's door" means they were very ill but are getting better, while "seriously ill" and especially "gravely ill" usually mean not long to go.
Picking a "Stephen Gately" i.e. young'un to earn big points is like buying a lottery ticket, very unlikely to gain. I find popstars in their 60s are a more reliable pick.
Finally, leave your posting late. Wait for the other Shippies to put their lists up, check through them for the 13 most ill and post it up on New Years Eve. These guidelines should see you alright.
Cheers,
Uriel.

I expect he'll survive (and hope he does, if that's his wish). Surely he's getting the best of medical care. After all, Katharine Hepburn outlived all predictions of (and hopes for) her demise until she felt she was good and ready!

Some of these are "kiss of life" situations; others, well, I think we all hope to boost my point count.
1. President Obama--the man is a target and there are people with weapons who don't like him, after all.
2. The Duke of Edinburgh--He's how old? Low point value, sure, but it's a lock.
3. Kim Jong-Il--Shouldn't be on this list. Shoulda bit it in oh-eight.
4. Fidel Castro--See above.
5. Keith Richards--What the @#$%???? The Stoneds are still alive? And still touring????? This year, we find out the truth: someone's put anamatronic controls in their drug-bloated corpses.
6. Mick Jagger--See above.
7. Marion Barry--Everyone's Favorite "Moral Politician" gets term-limited by God. B#$% set him up.
8. Mir Houssein Moussavi--So only official executions are forbidden in this game? He's gonna disappear in the middle of the night, get caught in "accidental" crossfire, etc. Might not even make it 'til this game starts in January.
9. Hamid Karzai--Go buy a newspaper.
10. Robert Mugabe--Can't come soon enough.
11. Nancy Pelosi--Angry people with guns decide to bring about the Revolution Timothy McVeigh style.
12. Felipe Calderon--Again, buy a newspaper. Bad things happen to those who act like law and order might be a good idea in Mexico.
13. Philip Glass--Seriously, you're that old and tomcatting around on Wife #4 with some hot 'cellist? Karma's Gonna Getcha.

Uriel has given some excellent advice upthread to you aspiring DP players. I improved my, um, hit rate when I found a link to the then-current alt.tasteless dead pool and studied the list of the 4-years-in-a-row winner (her title is MCB, for Most Cynical B---). Anyone who survived was on my list. I also found something called "The Death List".
I think Peter Falk is the only one from the MCB I'm not picking up this year, in favor of some younger folks.
So here's my list for '10:
Kim Jong-il (although I hear he is better)
Muhammed Ali
Seve Ballesteros
Rev. Billy Graham
A. A. M. al-Megrabi (Lockerbie bomber)
Margaret Thatcher
Amy Winehouse
Elizabeth Taylor
Robert Mugabe (this is probably my real "death wish", here)
Keith Richards (it's a frackin' miracle he's lived so long)
Stephen Hawking (ditto)
Elizabeth Edwards (whose two-timing husband appears distressingly healthy, more's the pity)
Roger Ebert
After Jan 1, I'll post the "ones that got away" so you can point and laugh at me if they finally die this year.

Some recycling from me, with the deceased duly replaced. A reprieve for Ariel Sharon (who shows no sign of getting switched off any time soon) and Joseph Kabila (the political situation in the Congo seems to have stabilised)
First the tyranical despots:
1) Kim Jong Il seems to have gotten better, but still not a well man
2) Fidel Castro more of entertaining despot, but sicker
3) Moussa Dadis Camara Head of the Guinean junta - one assassination attempt already
Released from prison on account of impending death:
4) Ronnie Biggs
5) Abdulbaset al Megrahi
The old and the sick
6) Margaret Thatcher if I take her off the list she'll die to spite me
7) Brian Wilson he of the Beach Boys. Looking in a bad way last time I saw him
8) Liz Taylor sick
9) Jimmy Saville old and a smoker
10) Johnny Halliday recent hospitalisation
11) Mohamed Ali sick

12) Peter Stringfellow walking corpse
13) Ben Johnson Olympic cheat and famous anabolic steroid abuser (bad for the heart)

1) Cardinal Cahal Daly
2) Abdel Bassett Al-Megrahi
3) Umara Yar'Auda
4) The Duke of Roxburghe
5) Sara Payne
6) Teresa Heinz Kerry
7) Seve Ballesteros
8) Steve Prescott
9) Bryant Gumbel
10) Bernie Madoff
11) Elizabeth Edwards
12) Ronnie Biggs
13) Brian Lenihan
Should any of these pass away before midnight tonight I would also like to place the following on the subs bench:
Sub 1) Paul Allen
Sub 2) Melanie Griffith
Sub 3) John Hartson
The only way to play this game is on reports of ill health. Choosing someone for being disliked or a fast-living rock star is a weak strategy. That said, I would genuinely like to wish each and every one on my list all the best for 2010, and I hope I finish 2010 on zero points.

I was a little more successful in 2009, so I'm not assuming that I'll give the kiss of life anymore. I've tweaked the remainders a bit--I'm undoubtedly a horrible person since I have real twinges about removing someone from the list. I don't want to hear of their death and have the first thought in my mind be "Damn, why did I remove them from this year's list?"
Thanks to the Ship--and this game--I am aware of a much more international dying set. Here are my choices for 2010:
1. Cardinal Cahal Daly (OK, so he's 92--not very many points but he's a good shot for First Blood).
2. Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi.
3. Ronnie Biggs.
4. Peter Tork.
5. Ruth Bader Ginsberg.
6. Jerry Lewis
7. Robert Mugabe
8. Hamid Karzai
9. Steven Hawking
10. Elizabeth Taylor
11. Nancy Reagan
12. Billy Graham
13. Fidel Castro
If one of these pops in the next few hours, my alternates would be:
A. Zsa-Zsa Gabor.
B. Betty Ford.
I've left Amy Winehouse off the list this year, in spite of her youth and a self-destructive streak that is legendary across the continents.

Hello. Please could I replace him with Sister Wendy Beckett. She's getting on a bit now and has heart problems. She still gets up at 1.30am and eats gruel in a draughty old caravan.

Please reread the OP:
quote:
This is now the 7th time we have done this, and each time someone questions the merits of what we are doing. Please bear in mind:
* This is only a game
* These are not death "Wish Lists" - You choose who you think might die, not who you want to die.
* The Circus is the place for games, not discussion, so debating the rights and wrongs of what we are doing should be done somewhere else.

Rest in peace, dear little Zelda!
I thought the following quote, taken from the website fletcher christian linked to, is very touching:
quote:
During the filming of Poltergeist III (1988), she was doing a photo shoot when she paused and lurched. Director Gary Sherman . . . asked her what was wrong. She responded with a comment like "I don't know, was just a jolt. I'm fine." Several minutes later Sherman was pulled aside and told . . . [that Zelda's] mother had just died. After developing the film from the photo shoot, it was discovered that every photo had come out fine, except one, which had an inexplicable cloud of light . . . covering half of her with a semi-transparent haze. Rubenstein said she knew the jolt had to have been her mother's passing.

Please excuse my moronic misspelling of fanfare. For my future reference, how long do I get to edit a post? All I did was get up and put the cat out before returning to my seat. I might briefly have looked up to see if I could find a gap in the clouds, but that was about it.

There's nothing in the rules about coverage in UK (or US) sources. I find the reports easily enough in Google News, so I think we should give the points. (Hosts?)
Posted by Imaginary Friend (# 186) on
:
Well, it was reported in The Gleaner, which is apparently Jamaica's oldest daily newspaper. So I guess that counts as a "major news outlet" and the points should stand.
Perhaps we need a more watertight definition of what counts as an allowable source though?
Posted by Lyda*Rose (# 4544) on
:
Nah. This is the Circus. I doubt anyone is going to get pissy about a legitimate news outlet. I think the rule was mostly to exclude people nominating third tier celebs like the local Pistachio Festival Queen or the Mayor of East Podunk.
Posted by Imaginary Friend (# 186) on
:
I guess another point is that it would be better if objections are raised when entries are submitted, not when (or if ) the person actually dies.
But I'm sure you're right: We can all play nice, right?
Posted by basso (# 4228) on
:
Light User's points are on the board.
Posted by Schroedinger's cat (# 64) on
:
I would concur that any objections should be made when nominations are originally posted, so that shipmates can have a chance to change. And the "major news outlet" concept was the guideline for the sort of person who would be acceptable for nomination, not the criteria for points.
So, to conclude, if your list has been accepted, you are eligible for points if anyone on it pops their clogs.
Posted by basso (# 4228) on
:
This is the Circus. Too many rules are going to spoil the fun.
I'm not going to go over the entry lists to verify that the names are well-known enough to qualify. Neither, I'd bet, are the hosts.
If somebody has put the local dogcatcher on their list, they're unlikely to get points. It's not too hard a decision.
And if somebody raises a stink about this game, we're probably seeing the final time it'll be played around here.

I don't know if anyone has this man on their list, but Wolfgang Wagner died on Sunday at the age of 90. Grandson of the composer Richard Wagner, he ran the Bayreuth opera festival with his brother, Wieland, from 1951 until Wieland's death in 1966, after which Wolfgang ran the festival on his own until his retirement in 2008. It's rather unfair to say, as the Guardian obituary does, that his life was most remarkable for its longevity, but it's nevertheless slightly odd to think that this man's grandfather, the colossus of 19th century opera, was born 2 years before the Battle of Waterloo.

It was kind of amusing listening to the obituaries, as people tried really hard to find nice things to say (mostly that he "mellowed" in his last years--I think he just got tired), while acknowledging that he was the most hated man in the history of sports. But then I'm a Giants fan....

Just heard that news legend Daniel Schorr has died at age 93. In today's news climate, I fear that we will not see his like again.
Among his many accomplishments as a reporter and in his latter years a much-revered news analyst with an amazing historical perspective, he became "the story" in the middle of his career as a member of Richard Nixon's infamous "enemies list". Nixon's FBI check on Schorr was named as one of the "high crimes and misdemeanors" in the impeachment articles.
I did not have him on my list - more's the pity, as I appear to be Giving the Gift of Life this year. Did anyone else have him?

Did I not post a list this year? What the hell is the matter with me? Every year I put Sen. Ted Stevens on my list. Early reports from fellow newsgeeks tell me he was in a plane crash that has fatalities.

Little Feat were scheduled to play at Cropredy on Friday. Despite the news of his death, they still came on stage and played, and won at least one fan (me) with a blistering set - and I believe they also stayed for their scheduled signing session. Troupers all.

May she rest in peace. I also met her and found her very down to earth and easy to chat to.

Umm. The rules say that you can't pick anyone under 18. I assume that there'd have to be a conversion from octopus years to human ones, but I don't know what the formula would be.
Fortunately, nobody picked Paul.

I think the Death Pool has been a blessing for celebrity longevity this year- knock wood. Lots of entrants have no deaths, some have one death, and less than a handful have two deaths. People on our lists are a pretty healthy lot this year.

Described as "one of the most original recording artists of his time", which is a bit of an understatement. What do you expect from a musician who, by his own admission, couldn't play keyboards! Composition was always likely to be novel.
