On another thread, the cry went up that we don't have nearly enough Old Testament based hymns. It was suggested that one might begin with the line "By all the saints in warfare . . ."

So here's the game:

So here goes. The first stanza is done for you. The next player will add a sixth line to the fifth, thus expanding the next stanza.

By all the saints in warfare proved,
By all the holy ones,
The Father to compassion moved
From dawn to setting suns.

Stout Jonah in beast's belly dwelt

Might be good to summarize the hymn to date:

By all the saints in warfare proved,
By all the holy ones,
The Father to compassion moved
From dawn to setting suns.

Stout Jonah in beast's belly dwelt
Till spewed into the sea.
After three days he really smelt
and desperate for a pee.

Talking of smells, on dungheap, Job
Bewailed his fallen state.
While Joseph, with his couture robe
In Egypt put on weight.

Hosea meanwhile hung his head
While muttering "We're all doomed!"
Elijah, fearing Ahab, fled
And Jezebel she fumed.

[New stanza]

Hey, I'll take it. It rhymes anyway.

Might be good to summarize once again. Then you can begin a new stanza.

(The tune, by the way, is St Anne -- what else?)

By all the saints in warfare proved,
By all the holy ones,
The Father to compassion moved
From dawn to setting suns.

Stout Jonah in beast's belly dwelt
Till spewed into the sea.
After three days he really smelt
and desperate for a pee.

Talking of smells, on dungheap, Job
Bewailed his fallen state.
While Joseph, with his couture robe
In Egypt put on weight.

Hosea meanwhile hung his head
While muttering "We're all doomed!"
Elijah, fearing Ahab, fled
And Jezebel she fumed.

What, Jephthah did his daughter smite?
What evil had she done?
She asked her father that she might
Have one more night of fun.

"Of FUN?" he roared with mighty voice,
"All right then - sling your 'ook."
And he did to the Lord rejoice,
'Tis in the holy book.

O Sodom, doom'd thou art. Shall I
O'er you shed a tear,
Or cast into deepest valley
Forever left in fear?

Melchizedek, of priestly hue,
Popped down the local shop,
Picked up some wine, a loaf or two,
And to his knees did drop.

"Write this," quoth he, "in that there book:"
Tell all the tale of Zephaniah,
who at Jerusalem cocked a snook.
[sorry, I thought we were on the next stanza.]

We haven't had a summary for quite some time. So, taking up where the last summary left off:

King Solomon lived not round here,
His wisdom was elsewhere;
He preached it out, loud and clear,
It seemed so right to share.

"Beware ungodly men!" he cried.
"Just run away and play."
Yet in idolatry he died!
His faithlessness at bay.

In Nisroch's fane, Sennacherib
'sieged King Hezekiah.
From sackcloth fashioned he a bib
"You have to help me, Squire!"

Israelite Judith packed her knife,
It was a very sharp one.
"Holofernes, this was your life,
Although it was a short one."

Melchizedek, of priestly line,
Appeared from who knows where,
Blessed Abram's victory by God most high
And gave him one tenth share.

That's your last word, oh hostly friend -
There's no more to discuss?
Our Bible tour is at an end -
And must we leave it thus?

But lo! The Testament o'erflows
With glorious saintly acts.
Nor tongue, nor pen, nor keyboard knows
To halt the march of facts.

Shall we continue? Or at least
Say farewell to this thread?
What is the state of this poor beast -
Say, is it quick or dead?

OK. Alternate version of previous verse:

[I take it we're just starting a new verse rather than continue the previous one, since the thread's been dormant for so long.]

There was a saint I've heard called Ruth.
Like Mary's Little Lamb

If we are, then Miss Amanda is afraid she's at a loss to understand your line.

Posted by jacobsen (# 14998) on :

I didn't know how to proceed. What is your wish?

Posted by Amanda B. Reckondwythe (# 5521) on :

Well, if Miss Amanda's wishes really came true, we would have sung the final stanza several frames ago. But since there are Shipmates who want to keep the thread alive . . .

It makes best sense, I think, to start a new stanza with Bib's contribution:
There was a saint I've heard called Ruth.

Then add my second line:
Like Mary's Little Lamb

And Doone's third line:
She always tried to tell the truth

(although I was expecting something along the lines of "She'd follow everywhere, 'tis truth!")

So the next contribution will conclude this verse with a line that rhymes with "Lamb".

Posted by Baptist Trainfan (# 15128) on :

The problem I had with this is that I simply couldn't see what connection line 2 had with line 1! I'd be happier to start again, take line 1 as read and go on from there ...

Posted by Amanda B. Reckondwythe (# 5521) on :

What Miss Amanda had in mind was Ruth 1:16 -- "Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay." Thus, Mary had a little lamb ("and everywhere that Mary went, the lamb was sure to go").

But if the consensus is to discard that verse and start a new one, who is Miss Amanda to object? Go for it.

Ah ... I failed to make the connection.

Could you be so kind as to set us going again?

Posted by Amanda B. Reckondwythe (# 5521) on :

All right. Miss Amanda will finish the previous verse and start a new one.

Reminder: This is a hymn to Old Testament saints, sung to the tune of St Anne. The more stilted the language, the better.

There was a saint I've heard called Ruth.
Like Mary's Little Lamb,
She'd follow everywhere, 'tis truth!
With Boaz 'scaped a jam.

Bad boys Elisha "Baldy" call'd.
