I am by nature a fairly optimistic creature when it comes to belief in my fellow humankind to be able to use reason and rationality for the good and to seek the truth.
My nature is being sorely tested by this.
Even the intelligent shippies responding are confusing the facts because that is precisely what the report and the article have tried to do. And it has worked. I have yet to speak to a single person that can see through the conflation of emotive issues.
Unbelievable. I'm horrified.
Sometimes it strikes me that God did indeed make a mistake in creating humankind. And that my faith in human rationality and reason is misplaced. The Myth of Progress comes alive. Never have I had such sympathy for the reformers and Pauline theology in the patheticness of human nature. The ability of false rhetoric to sway is astounding. Fuck the facts.
I originally didn't know whether I should post in purg or hell but the responses I have received today in a multitude of settings has flipped me out. I'm frickin angry.

That's odd, I thought everyone in the Purge thread was being careful and thoughtful. The only person throwing around accusations was you, Evensong.

Back in Purgatory on the other thread on this topic you posted:
"Dear friends and (beloved) enemies in Shippiness.
I am having trouble thinking clearly ( not unheard of ) and nobody seems to be able to set me straight for fear ( also not unheard of).
I require your estimable critical thinking skills."
Why did you bother? You're not taking much notice of some pretty carefully constructed and delivered views.

My request was genuine. I sincerely value the opinions of shipmates. I have rarely known more intelligent and thoughtful people. That's why I love this place.
GeeDees responses were helpful re reporting. The other conjecture was off point and confused by the rhetoric of the original article without the insight of the evidence presented in the two letters. [ 23. July 2016, 12:55: Message edited by: Evensong ]

As far as I can see people disagreeing with you are being careful as instructed. You've made a claim about slander, nobody else has used anything like that language.

As the kerfuffle is antipodean and it is well past sundown there, I wouldn't bother waiting.

That mousethief cooler recipe in full: quote: Mousethief Cooler™ recipe:
1 one-quart (one-liter) pitcher 1 tray of ice cubes (fill the pitcher about 3/4 full) 1/2 c. (120 ml) Gin. (Tanqueray, of course) 1/4 c. (60 ml) Fresh squoze lime juice* 1/4 c. (60 ml) Rose's sweetened lime juice** 1 can (12 oz/ 350 ml) tonic water
Stir. Serves 4 normal people, 2 really thirsty sweaty people, 1 alcoholic
_______ *if you have to use that reconstituted crap, have some other drink. **this is a bartender thing used for drinks that need sweetened lime juice; in the US you can get it with mixers or with fruit juices depending on the store

I suppose I could do the "Let me google that for you" search thing I know you absolutely love...
But I googled it: "how do I make a mousethief cooler". First result.

You could do "let me google that" but I didn't ask you for the recipe, I asked you where you got it from. There is no point in being sarcastic about that because it's not something I could find out any other way than by asking you. In fact it would be pretty fuckwitted.

Boy, you're a glass half empty kinda cat, MT. And Doc is probably only going to giggle at your flapping around in response to his LMGTFY Pavlovian bell. Forget about his obvious attempt to tweak your nose and focus on the information he just gave you.
FIRST. GODDAMN. HIT. How fucking cool is that? Damn!
As for the OP-- Evensong, are you actually calling everyone to Hell for not acting up to your rhetorical standards? Go attempt to have a reasonable conversation on an average news article comments section and then come back and tell me how backwards people are here.

The ship continues to deliver.
You average new article comments section makes one rethink Calvin's notions of total depravity.

I read the article, and the two notes at the bottom. The second, from 2010, makes it seem as though the Arch only had knowledge of the unlamented Rushton's use of adult pornography. However, the first confidential note makes it evident that he knew that Rushton had been accused of pederasty. If the first note preceded the second one (it is not dated, but I think the article suggests the first was from 2002), it isn't a great look. I'm not suggesting wrongdoing, but it is certainly something worth investigation by the press, and in the public interest to do so.

For reasons I really can't explain* the term "Mousethief Cooler" came unbidden into my mind this morning as I was trying to keep cool in this rather warm weather.
I've never tried it, and was wondering what was in it; as it sounds like GIN and tonic but even nicer, I think I may have to.

I'm not keen on normal GIN, but I do like these. It's one of my best Ship related finds. Thank you MT. (I also like raspberry, sloe or rubharb flavoured GIN). I should probably hang round and wait for the hell call for crimes against GIN but ... * shrug *

Gooseberries are sour nasty, things, but you can get them in GIN form. They may be improved dramatically by the addition of GIN.
A Google turned up this to purchase. Or you could make your own.
Please drink your GIN responsibly and do not post whilst under the influence.
