Someone told me today that they had read a piece in one of the papers recently about a letter alleged to have been written by Jesus in which he explicitly denied being the son of god...

I have been unable to find anything relating to this on the web. Can anyone help? Of course, this sounds like a laughable forgery on the same sort of level as the Protocols of the Elders of Zion but I'd like to know who's saying what anyway...

I seem to remember that Ian Wilson's book 'Are these the words of Jesus?' has a chapter about such an alleged letter. The conclusion (unsurprisingly, as it's a reasonably well-researched book) was that no such letter had existed, and any letter that Jesus might have written had vanished without trace.

I was with my wife, eating at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Factory in Times Square, NYC this past weekend. Out the window I read, zooming across a giant ticker, the news headline, "Historical evidence that Jesus had a human father."

My face did [Roll Eyes]

as I continued peeling shrimp.

I haven't heard any more about what it was though, or that it was a letter of any sort, which makes it even more hilarious IMO. What will they think of next? (Dan Brown's next book, perhaps?)

Does that mean you have some info about this alleged letter from Jesus? If so, is there anything online you can link to for the benefit of those of us who haven't come across it?

I suspect that the article being referred to was this one from The Times. However, a more serious article on the subject can be found here.

It appears that this is yet more publicity for Michael Baigent of Holy Blood and Holy Grail fame.

He hasn't even got a letter. He claims he saw a letter, which was written in Aramaic, which he admits he can't read, and which subsequently fell out of his hands and was destroyed by the Vatican. Obviously.

It gets better. Aramaic and Hebrew share the same alphabet and are really very similar in a lot of other ways.

So he knew enough to ID the language, but not to read it.

(Does this belong on that "miracles" thread?)

This sounds rather like the plot for God Only Knows, a play by Hugh Whitemore published in 2001.

Which leaves me wondering if he should try taking legal action against Michael Baigent for plagiarism. [Devil]

On reading the thread title I immediately thought of the story of Abgar of Edessa which is still a 'live' tradition in the Holy Apostolic and Catholic Assyrian Church of the East . Does anyone know of any other traditions of letters from Jesus?
