I tried putting 'justinian' in the line to search for his name, because I haven't seen any of his posts recently and wondered if he is still a member, but I must have done something wrong, because there was 'no match'. I'm sure it's really very simple, but I'm afraid I'll have to ask for a bit of extra help, as I use screen reader and magnification.
thank you.

Where were you searching? I don't seem to have a problem

Search in the directory seems OK.
I wish that I could find the proper way to search all the forums at once for a word or phrase (including the name of a referenced forum member).

You can't find the proper way because there is none. The search function leaves a great deal to be desired.

Try using Google for that. It works well.

To search for a person's posts click on "Directory" at the top of any forum. Put part of the name in the search box that comes up, it isn't case sensitive. Then click on the name of the perso you are looking for and finally click on view recent posts which will get that member's last 50 posts.
I regularly do this to remind myself of the fora I have posted on.

Balaam, another way to do what you want to do is to click on your name and then on the right above the first blue line click view recent posts.

You may already know this, but for the uninitiated, "site:forum.ship-of-fools.com" added to your Google query works a zillion (and one) times better than the creaky board search facility.

Having the brain of an ass I cannot always remember where I've posted to find my name.

Ah, I smpathise!
Having found this myself some years ago, I then put 'my latest posts' link on to the 'favourites' list!
I have had another try ... and having reached the 'no matches' again, checked through the 'search terms' and what I'd put in, and, after another try, realised that I just might be on the wrong page!!! i.e. I was on 'search' and not 'directory'! So now I can do it!
Thank you all for your help

Thanks for the Google tip. Is there anything it doesn't crawl?

It doesn't crawl the private boards.
Don't forget that the advanced search in google allows you to restrict your search to the SoF domain.
