Tonight I attended a candlelight memorial service for three family members who were stabbed to death last weekend here in the Bellevue area of Nashville.
Story here.
I attended because the 14 year old boy was a scout in one of the units for which I am a commissioner, and; I knew him.
He was also a freshman at the local high school. The service, with some guidance from a local Lutheran minister, was chiefly composed of the young man's classmates at the high school. They would get up and sing a song, say a prayer, read a poem they had written, or just cry for a bit.
The mother was a waitress at a new local eatery. The grandmother helped make change at the annual Christmas Tree sale by Troop 87, where the young man was a scout.
I suppose this is not of much interest. It is just another murder in a constant string of murders in our world.
I guess what made me write this is seeing how these senseless deaths affected a whole group of people. There are all kinds of young people who are having to cope with these savage killings and who will need help to do so.
May the Lord bring all of them hope and peace.

Tortuf, how awful and how infuriating. I am sorry for your loss and can't help but think that your presence and your efforts with the scouting organization will be a big help to these young people as they try to cope with such a senseless loss. Good for the Lutheran pastor that helped the young man's friends put together the memorial service.
So sad. There's just too damn much of this.

I agree. Too much violence, too little understanding. Too much selfishness, too little forgiveness.
I will remember the family members in my prayers tomorrow, and through the coming days.

The funeral was today. Yesterday was visitation. I think there were over 70 scouts in uniform and about 35 adult leaders in uniform. That was the bulk of the crowd when we were there.
Thankfully, counseling services are already arranged for anyone who wants them. There are counselors from within the commissioner services in scouts as well as from the church where the troop meets.
A paramedic who went into the house and dealt with the carnage said it looked like the devil had been there. Every paramedic received mandatory grief counseling.
And, oh yes. The thing that touched all this off? A missing car navigation device.
I appreciate everyone's kind responses.

My wife knows the killer. It creeps her out every time a news story runs on it. He was a regular in a class she takes at the local YMCA. Her spidey senses always tingled when he was in class, but nothing to make someone think he was capable of this.
Your paramedic friend was right. I spoke to a cop buddy who is an instructor at the police academy and a SWAT member. He spoke with the first officer on scene (who happens to be a rookie, the poor guy). Whatever you're thinking it looked like in there, it was worse. All the cops there have to do counseling too.
I hope that someday that little girl can find some normality in her life. She has lost her family, her home, her school, and so much more. [ 12. September 2012, 21:56: Message edited by: monkeylizard ]
