The real advert for the Vacancy in See of Canterbury asks for people who wish to comment, or propose candidates, to email or write their wishes to the Secretaries for Appointments. So you, even you with the spotty face and the habit of skulking in the back pew hoping for a free Fair Trade coffee at the end of the service, can plead for the candidate of your choice to be next ABC. It's true - I've seen the advert with my own eyes in the Church Times, and it's reproduced word-for-word here as well.
Which lucky candidate will you be putting forward for the role?

Glad to see I voted with the majority (so far).

I know Coventry is said to be much favoured, but I really can't see why. Of the names mentioned, the best IMNSVHO in Chartres. While I don't agree with him on every issue he seems to me to be a holy and caring man - the two top qualities I would look for in any cleric.

I think they should give the job to Dawn French - The Archbishop of Dibley has a certain ring to it, don't you think?

I'm afraid that my preferred candidate, Dougal McGuire, is sadly ineligible, being semi-sorta-nominally Catholic.
When it's time for Benny to be replaced, though . . .

She can have her turn next time - they'll have allowed women bishops by then.

ISTM that the most telling thing is that no one has so far voted for "me". If that doesn' t tell you it's a poisoned chalice...

They haven't voted for Jeremy Clarkson either, which is probably just as well.

I did think of Rowan Atkinson: he does have the car for it - a sixteen-cylindre Rolls Royce - although he is clean-shaven! In the end, I voted for the Bishop of York, as opposed to one of my facebook friends who happens to be a bishop...

Oh yes I have, but I wasn't being all that serious. I have no idea what his religious opinions or beliefs are (neither is it any of my business) but I find that I agree with him on most other things ...

Someone started a petition for Jeremy Clarkson to become Prime Minister. I'm not sure if he'd be satisfied with merely being Archbishop of Canterbury.

Jeremy Clarkson could be ideal for the job as he doesn't even agree with all of the opinions he expresses in his newspaper column (or his books or Top Gear for that matter. That would be a massive advantage over the principled worthies lining up for the job. No sleepless nights worrying about this and that, just "It's a decision, it's been made, lights out and see you in the morning".

I voted for myself...why? I'm all about going big or going home...and what's bigger than a woman ABC? A LESBIAN ABC...and that's me!

Must be a newbie thing, I've voted for myself too. The English Reformers favoured a presbyterian ecclesiology, and were on track to achieve it until Laud found that he quite liked a spot of pompery and circumstancey and started the process of dragging the English church back to Constantinian helotry.
If you vote for me, I'll give free data projectors and a year's subscription to Sharefaith to every Anglican parish which doesn't already have them.
I've directed first preferences to the Bishop of Willesden..

Rather to my surprise, I'm with the majority. Give Adam Smallbone the job! If not him, his camp rural dean, who spends his time swanning around in the back of taxis.

The real people doing the choosing are being assembled ready to begin. I wonder how interested they will be with the results of our poll? ![[Biased]](wink.gif)

Apparently either the new ABC has been chosen, or they are no longer interviewing candidates: Chorister's link in the OP is no longer viable.

The date for submitting suggestions has passed I think, hence the removal of the 'job spec.'. Now the chosen committee get down to their work of choosing. Interestingly, the Archbishop of Wales is on the panel as well.

And indeed, I voted for a leading candidate who will require elevation to sacred orders. Indeed further, when I mention Archbishop of Canterbury to my children, he is the man they call to mind. It's only right.

Interesting. Why not just trust to the Holy Spirit? Of course, the last time the Cardinals did that, they got Johannes Paulus I. He died, was killed (take your pick) within 33 days, IIRC. I wonder if he would have lasted. That would have been an interesting papacy. A different church too, at the end, I suspect.

I can't remember where I read it (some book) but it has been suggested that the people who most want a job of leadership are probably the worst people to do that job and so dragging some in kicking and screaming is probably a good sign.

He'd be great, but as he's not a bishop (yet) he's not in the running.

The Guardian appears to be a fan of Justin Welby, Bishop of Durham. His experience of business, reconciliation and interfaith work count for him, but like everything else about the job they probably count against him too!
He appears to be the "other" kind of Old Etonian, so the PM and his cabal might not like him (he went to Cambridge too, tut, tut). I would expect him to be less prone to misunderstndings than ++Rowan and unlikely to worry about them either. The highest recommendation must be that the people at Durham don't want him as ABC, because they want to keep him where he is.

So the ABC appointments people can't make up their minds??? Who said they weren't representative of the CofE as a whole?
Best solution? Secret ballot all people on parish electoral rolls (as at today's date) who are in church on, say, Advent Sunday. Winner of that gets the job.
Secret ballot

Advent? Psh. How about those who show up on, say, Reformation Sunday? Or the Sunday just before? You know, the one nobody but nobody will bother showing up for?

It's a fairly common idea. I first came across it in THHGTTG, referring to the role of Galactic President, but I'm sure it's much older than that. Douglas Adams has quite a neat way of putting it, though:
quote:
The major problem - one of the major problems (for there are several) with governing people is that of who you get to do it. Or rather, of who manages to get people to let them do it to them. To summarise: it is a well known and much lamented fact that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarise the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made president should on no account be allowed to do the job. To summarise the summary of the summary: people are a problem.
I think that's pretty fair.
