I did think of Rowan Atkinson: he does have the car for it - a sixteen-cylindre Rolls Royce - although he is clean-shaven! In the end, I voted for the Bishop of York, as opposed to one of my facebook friends who happens to be a bishop...

Someone started a petition for Jeremy Clarkson to become Prime Minister. I'm not sure if he'd be satisfied with merely being Archbishop of Canterbury.

Jeremy Clarkson could be ideal for the job as he doesn't even agree with all of the opinions he expresses in his newspaper column (or his books or Top Gear for that matter. That would be a massive advantage over the principled worthies lining up for the job. No sleepless nights worrying about this and that, just "It's a decision, it's been made, lights out and see you in the morning".

Must be a newbie thing, I've voted for myself too. The English Reformers favoured a presbyterian ecclesiology, and were on track to achieve it until Laud found that he quite liked a spot of pompery and circumstancey and started the process of dragging the English church back to Constantinian helotry.
If you vote for me, I'll give free data projectors and a year's subscription to Sharefaith to every Anglican parish which doesn't already have them.
I've directed first preferences to the Bishop of Willesden..

The date for submitting suggestions has passed I think, hence the removal of the 'job spec.'. Now the chosen committee get down to their work of choosing. Interestingly, the Archbishop of Wales is on the panel as well.

Interesting. Why not just trust to the Holy Spirit? Of course, the last time the Cardinals did that, they got Johannes Paulus I. He died, was killed (take your pick) within 33 days, IIRC. I wonder if he would have lasted. That would have been an interesting papacy. A different church too, at the end, I suspect.

I can't remember where I read it (some book) but it has been suggested that the people who most want a job of leadership are probably the worst people to do that job and so dragging some in kicking and screaming is probably a good sign.

The Guardian appears to be a fan of Justin Welby, Bishop of Durham. His experience of business, reconciliation and interfaith work count for him, but like everything else about the job they probably count against him too!

He appears to be the "other" kind of Old Etonian, so the PM and his cabal might not like him (he went to Cambridge too, tut, tut). I would expect him to be less prone to misunderstndings than ++Rowan and unlikely to worry about them either. The highest recommendation must be that the people at Durham don't want him as ABC, because they want to keep him where he is.

So the ABC appointments people can't make up their minds??? Who said they weren't representative of the CofE as a whole?

Best solution? Secret ballot all people on parish electoral rolls (as at today's date) who are in church on, say, Advent Sunday. Winner of that gets the job.
