A question for the hosts and admin team.

What is this H&A bullshit that seems to be a virus infecting a number of threads, notably the one about the Bishop of Rome.

If some shipmate is responsible for it responsible, then he or she should be made to walk the blank, i.e. cast adrift and not allowed back on the Ship. Maybe someone thinks it's funny, but I certainly don't.

If the pope had informed SoF of his resignation in advance, we might perhaps have been able to reschedule but sadly he didn't.

If those posting on the pope's resignation thread had actually heeded the thread that was stickied at the top of purg the entire H&A day period they could have chosen whatever they liked at the bottom of their posts - including perhaps apposite prayers for the pontiff - but most of them didn't.

Oh man! It's the ever-predictible "I hate H&A Day, you're idiots who wreck the board, this isn't funny, I have a tree limb jammed so far up my ass it's coming out my mouth" thread!

My my, I wonder how likely it is that the people in charge of planking are going to plank themselves.

There are reasons other than sticks indelicately placed to not care for H&A days. In my view though, the H&As allowed out to play is little enough reward for their service, so I can manage to deal for a couple of days.

Taukai's post reminds me of the Narnia phrase 'It's always winter, but it's never Christmas'. H&A Days help to brighten up the monotony of sameness - February is one of those months that needs a little brightness. Halloween would also be a good time for mischief making, as in the real world. After all, the H&A's wouldn't need to dress up much...

I like how Tukai waited until after H&A Day was over to whine about it - thus avoiding the myriad amusing ways I could have buggered with his posts/profile in an effort to teach him about the True Meaning Of The Festival*.

Vapid whine or not, there's a healthy sense of self-preservation at work there!

.

*= which is, of course, that we could fuck with y'all like that any time we want - so bear that in mind next time you have a whine about how mean and capricious the Hosts & Admins are.

Well, Hellhosts get to be a tad capricious all the time. It's the hosts in other parts of the Ship that you've really got to watch out for on H&A days.

That's true - I did notice the other hosts taking extra glee in the madness.

Oh and Tukai - you've been on the Ship since 2007 and this is the first time you've even noticed a H&A day, never mind complain about it? Really?

(I know that this is akin to giving someone a machine gun and then pinning a target on my chest......)

I have avoided the Ship over the past few days precisely because the whole "ooo, let's be naughty and mess around with things" is so terribly lame.

I really can't be bothered to try and work out what was going on. And - perhaps more importantly - I really don't think it is a bright idea if you want new people joining the Ship. It's terribly exclusive - something that only an inner core will understand. And it just buggers up any new people visiting the Ship - they won't have a clue what is going on and will go away (probably never to return).

So my vote (if I had one!) would be to do away with this rather smug little love-fest.

Yes, a few people prefer to stay away during H&A Day. That's why we put the nice big warning up to let them know that it's happening.

Your laziness was not a primary consideration in our decision making. Nor do I expect it to become one any time soon.

H&A Days last for approximately three days every three years or so. I think we'll manage.

See, there's your real problem with it - it's something we do for the benefit of the Hosts and Admins rather than for you. Well, fuck you buddy - we're going to keep giving our hard-working volunteers the occasional chance to let their hair down and bounce some of the shit you lot give them back at you. Consider it the online version of an office Dress-Down Friday, except with more craziness and only happening every other year or so.

I thought it was a laff. And having been a mod myself, I can appreciate how it is needed sometimes, just to release some of that pent-up sadism and vengeance.

It took me a while to understand what was going on, and I was just beginning to marshal together some obscene/stupid maxims, when it ended. Ah well, I will just have to use them anyway. Will anyone spot the difference?

I can't really see that being the case. I very much doubt if people go to the trouble of registering on a site like this on the basis of happening upon it by chance. Most common phrase on AS welcome posts is "I've been lurking for ages, and I finally etc etc etc".

And if the H&A want to let their hair down occasionally, especially when they've had some new appointees and want to do team-building and stuff, good luck to them.

Yeah, I understand you but they take a whole lot of shit and drudgery and get very little out of it. It's a bit of a pain if you want to have a proper grown-up discussion during this time but let them have their fun. They may even deserve it. There's nothing we can do anyway. Literally.

Tukai,

You've been on board since September 2007. At a rough guess this must be the third H&A day since then. That's rather less than ten days out of your near 2,000 days on board.

Gosh, we really put you through it.

It's not exclusive, it's just that some people have been on here longer than others and occasionally refer to things which happened in the past. As happens in real life everywhere, in case you haven't noticed.

As for the idea that new people will be put off - it's only on for a couple of days once every few years. People who are really interested in joining the ship will visit a few times before they decide if it's for them. The chances of all these visits coinciding with H&A Day is extremely minimal.

But then, what would you expect Oscar the Grouch to say? At least he's acting in character. [Roll Eyes]

It's not a Christian website, but one of Christian unrest - there's a real difference.

Not sure which has been more boring:

The whining about H&A?

Or the whining during H&A by H&A types when others didn't play along?

As long as your guess is close to "whining about whining" then maybe prizes are possible.

Is it just my imagination, or has this thread - which said 'please stop H&A day' sometime after H&A day had already stopped - now lasted longer than H&A day did?

I'm trying to think of ways it might get stupider, but I'm struggling.

Well you could use it to announce another H&A day! That might do it.

Hostly Bowler On

orfeo asked if this thread could get stupider and I'm going to make sure it doesn't go that way, or any other way for that matter.
