I will be at a loose end in the Clifton Triangle area of Bristol – and looking for a cheap place to eat – on the evening of Monday 11th Feb. Anyone care to join me? Could do Harbourside or other central location, if preferred. Alternatively, late coffee/early lunch on morning of the 12th.

Yes - I'd be up for that - either time is free for me and i am not far away from there.
Word to the wise, though - it has been hard to pin down Bristolians to a time and a lot of shipmeets never happen here because of it - so if there's plenty of interest, go with a particular time and stick to it.

Evening of the 11th a good possibilty for me - I'll watch the thread

I was thinking yesterday that maybe it was time for a Bristol meet. Unfortunately that's a second Monday so it's Taizé prayer at SMR at 7:30pm. You're welcome to come along, but not quite what is expected.

It's a lovely idea, Carys - given that you've never heard me sing - but I'm in a lecture till 7. So could make it to SMR by 7.30 but with no time to eat - so I'm afraid I'm going to make eating a priority.

I really wish I could- but am already busy that evening

As regards places to eat, I'm contemplating Jamie Oliver's Italian on Park Street, Pizza Express on Berkeley Square or The Brass Pig on the Clifton Triangle, unless anyone can suggest something either cheaper or more adventurous.
Posted by leo (# 1458) on
:
Cafe Rouge (website)probably cheaper and reasonable. We have had Shipmeets there before.
There is also a Turkish place which I intend to check out next time i am passing. (review)

I'm not that interested in Cafe Rouge, but the other place you linked to (Oz, on Clifton Triangle) does look quite interesting, though perhaps a bit expensive. However, I don't mind giving it a go if at least one other person is definitely coming.

OK guys - do we have any consensus on this?
I can't add anything to the mix - the only places I know in Bristol are the Loch Fyne restaurant (far too expensive!!) and the SS Great Britain (hardly relevant!)
Is there somewhere suitable for a meet, preferably with some reasonably-priced parking nearby?
Posted by leo (# 1458) on
:
The advantage of the Brass Pig is that one would not need to book.
Jamie Oliver is, I think, overhyped but might be interesting.
Oz is small so booking might be needed.
The is a multi storey car park in upper Berekeley Place. Otherwise, parking is well nigh impossible.
I am still up for it though I am wondering where all the other Bristol people are.

I think that, if you get to Berkeley Square by 7, you would be able to park there (on a meter) but it does tend to fill up in the evening. That would be handiest for Jamie's. Oz have got a website - but it looks a tad more expensive than I had in mind.
I think, given leo's reservations about JamieO, I favour the Brass Pig, and it is more or less next door to the multi-storey car park (which, for reasons that escape me, is called the West End, I believe) but would we ever find each other? It's a huge place. I suppose at least Tony and I ought to recognise each other, but it might actually be better to book.

OK - Brass Pig - I shall be outside at 7 - easy to recognise at 6 foot 6 tall.
(Unless i hear otherwise - last likely logon to this thread around 4pm on the monday.)

Can I suggest 7.15? If you (or you, Tony) have a mobile, maybe we should exchange numbers by PM, in case of last minute changes, as I too may not be able to access the internet much that afternoon/ evening.

7.15 is easier for me - mobile via PM will be winging its way to you soon!

7.15 is fine - phone number on the way to Qlib and leo. If you could let me have yours it would help.
Meet outside then?

As the weather is likely to be vile, and as we now all have each other's mobiles, let's assume that if one of us is late, the others will go in and we'll locate each other using satellite tracking, or something like that.

You could just wear something distinctive.
Posted by QLib (# 43) on
:
Yes, distinctive gear is a good idea. That way, if anyone else decides to join us at the last minute, we should be easy to spot.
Posted by leo (# 1458) on
:
Distinctive? Mmmm - it will rain heavily and my cassock takes a long time to dry! AND I feel like I have to be on my best behaviour when wearing it.

Mercifully, there isn't a pub quiz there until Tuesday.

Thanks guys - a good shipmeet - if a rather mini-meet!
You'll be pleased to hear that I did find the car OK and got out of Bristol without further problems - sat-nav is (sometimes) wonderful!
Posted by QLib (# 43) on
:
The sat nav found the car for you? I want one of those!

Thanks - interesting to meet people 'in real life' whom you've read here.
As I said yesterday, i intend to organise a shipmeet in the summer and try to drag the locals out to it.
