I will in the centre of English culture (Edinburgh) soon. (Yes, yes, I know it’s in Scotland, but as the USA owes much of its culture to Canada, so also does England owe its to Scotland)

To be precise I will be in the national capital from April 15-April 19. Since the 15th and the 19th are travelling days, that gives me three days to play.

The 16th, I will be visiting the Royal Museum of Scotland with the Cresswell clan during the day but the evening will be at Namaste restaurant with a possible gathering at a pub nearby.
On the 17th, I expect to be visiting Holyrood and environs, but dinner will be at the Mother India's Cafe.

On the 18th, I will be spending the morning privately then taking myself off to the portrait gallery. Supper will possibly be at either one of The Dome or The Standing Order in New Town.

Thursday’s supper venue is, however, open to other suggestions, All three evenings are open to all shipmates eager to get their very own sachet of freshly ground Indian chilli powder (and to buy my whisky).
So, come one!, Come all! The greatest show on earth is about to commence!

Well, I'd be happy to come over to Embra one evening if I'm free. I need to check my diary...

Pete, I'm not sure that soliciting for booze during the Lenten Fast, even if it will be consumed after the event, is quite within the Spirit of the Act...

...and anyway who in Edinburgh, or indeed the whole of Scotland, could afford to indulge you in the quantities you drink?

ITTWACW!

I am certainly up for the 16th at Namaste Kathmandhu (given that it is about 2 minutes' slow walk from where I work).

Posted by Surfing Madness (# 11087) on :

I am a possible, for either the Wednesday or the Thursday, depending on how the essays are going. I'll keep an eye on this thread and see what is happening.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread, too.

And me if I'm around!

Posted by Cottontail (# 12234) on :

A return trip to the Burgh is a definite possibility. I'll see nearer the time.

Posted by lilBuddha (# 14333) on :

If you've the time, Pete, a trip A' Ghàidhealtachd is well worth it.

Posted by Dafyd (# 5549) on :

And that's the week we're in London. Sorry I and the Dafling won't see you.

Posted by kingsfold (# 1726) on :

At this point the week looks fairly free, so I'm definitely persuadable to come over one night. Likely it would be Tues or Weds.

I think you mean Tuesday, no? [Biased]

By the way I'm happy to do the booking for Namaste Kathmandu, it will be easy to pop in as I am round the corner most days.

Posted by kingsfold (# 1726) on :

Well, that would be convenient...
Only reason I could imagine it being a problem is if I wind up with a very early start on the Weds. Although a single short night is unlikely to be a deal-breaker [Big Grin]

Sounds like we meet Pete on Tues then...

Alas. Physical incapacity and logistics tell against me.

Well here is the info; It is amazing what typing in what "distillery" "Edinburgh" and "trip" results into Google results in.

Think The Dome is indicated for Thursday. I checked out Standing Order and way too many steps. The Dome has some external ones, but also a proper chairlift, which they will fire up when required.

Also, if you fancy dining among marbled splendour, it has that. I would join certainly join you, as I rather fancy the look of the place.

Posted by Derf (# 2093) on :

I'm pretty sure Glenkinchie's accessible by bus from Edinburgh (or indeed car if you have access to one), and when we went it had a good tasting session at the end - you got to try several rather than just a mouthful of their 10 year old like most places. Not that this helped me any as I don't like the stuff and was driving, but my companions appreciated it.

It's too far away to have a clue what my diary will be like in the evenings midweek but I'll keep an eye out for what you're up to.

Aye, surely.

Posted by PeteC (# 10422) on :

So it's Namaste Restaurant on Tuesday evening 16th;
Mother India's Cafe on the Wednesday or The Dome on Thursday.

State your preferences! I am sure that reservations have to be made shortly. One or all [Big Grin]

Is a 7 pm dinner start ok for you lot?

Or is that too early/late?

Posted by kingsfold (# 1726) on :

A 7pm dinner is very good as far as I'm concerned, as it's around an hour to travel over from Glasgae. That gives me time to get there after work without rushing madly. Jack? Derf?

16th at Namaste is a possibility - let me check with scz and see what he thinks. I'm presuming they wouldn't have any issues with the sczlet being there, although I'd have to feed her earlier or she'd be v grumpy! If still awake she'd no doubt tuck in anyway - she appears to have inherited her father's appetite [Eek!]

Posted by Derf (# 2093) on :

Scz is up for it so add us to the list for Tues, at least provisionally. If you're booking and they'll let you book a highchair that would be v helpful.

Posted by Jack the Lass (# 3415) on :

7's good for me on the 16th if I can persuade TME to drive over from Glasgow after work. If I'm on my own then it might be a bit more complicated (only 1 train an hour to Stirling after 7.30 which is a colossal pain). I will do my best to be persuasive [Smile] (and am still happy to do the booking).

Posted by North East Quine (# 13049) on :

I have a Session meeting on Tues 16th so definitely can't make that.

I'll confirm if I can make Wed 17th or Thurs 18th asap.

Posted by Surfing Madness (# 11087) on :

I'm still thinking, when do I need to confirm by?

Posted by PeteC (# 10422) on :

I will leave that for my conveners to decide - but I would imagine that 2 days before the actual dinner would be adequate. Mid week dinners are not as popular with others as weekendish ones.

Posted by Alan Cresswell (# 31) on :

When organising largish meets in the past, I've usually booked quite early with a "we're expecting about X people, when do you need me to confirm exact numbers?"

Posted by Jack the Lass (# 3415) on :

I'm probably going to go in sometime next week (midweek) to make the initial booking for the 16th (and enquiring about a high chair), so any other expressions of interest will be appreciated! I'll go back nearer the time with precise numbers.

Posted by Firenze (# 619) on :

I and One Other will definitely be joining Pete at The Dome on Thursday - and I'm happy to do the booking for that venue.

Tuesday I'm definitely out, as I'll be back quite late from the Isle of Wight. Wednesday I may join the outing to Mother India - again, happy to do the booking in any case.

Posted by Wet Kipper (# 1654) on :

I'm also watching the thread with interest, will need to check the calendar at home but think I would be free on the Tuesday.

Stupid question, but will Namaste accomodate Spice Wimps™ ?

I expect they will cater to Scottish tastes.

From your post, I gather you do not want a baggie?

My memory is that the food is not particularly hot. One item I like from there - a flatbread with onions - is not spiced at all.

I'm probably going to pop in to Namaste Katmandhu tomorrow to make a provisional booking for the 16th. It looks like it will be just me out of the two of us, so the list I have at the moment is (I think):

PeteC
me
kingsfold
derf, scz and sczlet
Wet Kipper

I'm not sure yet about Surfing Madness, and also will the Cresswells be in town still in the evening? I'll make a booking for 9 adults and 3 kids provisionally, but can alter it nearer the time I'm sure (the booking will be in my real name, which everyone on that list knows - well maybe sczlet might struggle a bit with it).

Also Louise are you still here? Would be great to see you again ....

well, it's on our calendar now, so it looks like I'm coming !

Oh, and I'm sure someone I know would happily make appropriate use of a sample from the subcontinent.

Oops! Somehow I missed this. Because it will be a school night and TheBoy will have already missed school that day, we'll have to give the evening meal a miss on the Tuesday evening. However, Macguyver's Apprentice might still be available, so I will try to get his attention and point him this way!

Can't believe how quickly this is approaching - yay!

OK - I've made a booking for the 16th at 7pm at Namaste Katmandhu for 7 adults and 1 child (and yes they do have a high chair). They seem very flexible so if there are any drop-outs or additions that should be easily accommodated, I just need to let them know by the morning of the 16th. The booking is in a random misspelling of my name (I did try to explain clearly, but apparently my 'r's sound like 'o' however hard I try. It's at times like that I wish I could roll my rrrrrr's [Smile] ).

Just a by-the-way here. I will be staying at the Cameron Toll Travelodge when I am in the city. Firenze has pointed me to a laundry service which I will take in on the Thursday.

I also have to go to the railway station to pick up my tickets for York etc. I also need to go to the Post Office (or satellite) to post off two parcels.

Starting with the laundry, could I do this in one taxi-hire, with the taxi waiting for me at each point?

JtL : I sympathise somewhat with rolling Rs. Malayalam has at least 10 ways of using R and each is pronounced differently. But as I discovered last year when teaching a lad some basic French vocabulary, rolling Rs are not part of his language skills. I was quite amused.

There is a PO in proximity to the laundry. Tell you what, can you leave parcels/bag of laundry in reception at the Travelodge? I could pick them up Wednesday, and return service-washed stuff on Thursday. All points are on my usual bus route, along which I can zip for FREE, so no problem (also, taxi couldn't really park on S Clerk St).

I would be interested in doing the Nat Portrait on Thursday (I haven't been round since they did the major renovation). So we could do an itinery whereby I come to the hotel (with laundry), we go to Waverley, get tickets, continue to NPG - if that appeals?

Thanks for booking Jack, and yay for their being a highchair. Although on current form the sczlet may refuse to sit in it because it's not Mummy's knee. Equally the food on Mummy's plate is acceptable whereas the identical food on her plate isn't. <sigh>

I'm trying to imagine how on earth they made sense of your name having an o in it!

That should work out quite well. What time would you be likely to be at Hotel, though? I expect that I might wait til the afternoon on Wed to do Holyrood, etc.

Thursday is looking good as a plan re Waverly.

I get back from down south late Tuesday, so Wednesday I will just be dotting about, very possibly to the shopping centre just across from the Travelodge. So the answer is I can call in any time mid morning onwards.

Plus the short distance between the station and the gallery will take us St Andrew's Sq and, if you like, a preview of The Dome.

Just to add that I am here until Thursday, and can make outstanding restaurant bookings, if we have numbers? At the moment - correct me if I'm wrong - it's Wednesday ? Thursday 3 (Pete + 2).

Pete, you'll be delighted to know that the temperatures for next week are set to soar as high as 13 or 14C (and, believe me, that's quite a soar from what it's been/is) and it's forecast not to rain all the time.

Slight major crisis. The Dome is booked up next Thursday (apparently some major conference thrash is going on in Edinburgh), and they can't fit us in.

I will try and find somewhere else which is a) convenient to the National Portrait Gallery/east end of the New Town and b) accessible and c) attractive menu.

The bummer is that I am off to Sussex until Tuesday, and not sure about the web access.

OK, so as far as I can tell the list for Tuesday night is:

PeteC
me
derf, scz and sczlet
kingsfold
Wet Kipper

Any more for any more (I'll confirm final numbers with them on Tuesday morning)? Sorry to miss Surfing Madness, and Dafyd sorry you're out of town too...

Final numbers may mean that I'm not there - I'm really struggling to shift the worst cold I've had for a very long time [Waterworks] and I'm guessing with young'uns and not-so-young'uns in the company sharing the lurgy won't go down too well... I'll see how I feel on Tuesday morning and make the decision then. But will confirm with the restaurant whatever.

Posted by Derf (# 2093) on :

Jack, don't stay away on our account - we're resigned to living in a house of permanent lurgy, the only variable is how bad it is! The technical term round here is nursery nose...

It's looking increasingly likely I'll be staying away on my own account - having spent much of today horizontal with the room spinning [Frown]

However, I'll still confirm everything with Namaste Katmandhu tomorrow morning (5 adults & 1 child), and I was thinking that if I feel a bit more human I will come along to the Thursday meet instead.

Just in the very unlikely event that Pete gets to see this in the next half hour before going to the restaurant: Pete, bring some cash! They have problems with their phone line so can't take card payments!

Sorry I'm going to miss it tonight - I'm getting so fed up of this cold. I'm still hopeful though I can make it on Thursday instead.

A railway station, a John Lewis, a pub, a restaurant, a gallery, two cathedrals, and a helluva lot of cobbles, hills and scary ramps, and Pete should be all Embra'ed out.

And it was only slightly freezing and only blowing a mild gale.

Well I had a good time anyway.

Well in typical Scottish style, Edinburgh waited till the day Pete left to put on the glorious weather. Today would have been absolutely perfect to explore Edinburgh (Pete, you'll just have to come back!).

Well, I'm back home, and just wanted to say what a lovely evening that was. Great company, and so good to put some more faces to names. PeteC, thank you very much indeed for being the impetus behind that little shipmeet, and thank you too for the chilli powder! I am glad you made it to Edinburgh in the end, and hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday. And thanks too to Firenze for organising the restaurant. Shippies rock! [Yipee]

Posted by PeteC (# 10422) on :

They certainly do rock, and I just wobble about forgetting that I had to thank the Embra shippies for being so much fun to eat and drink and hang about with.

Many thanks to Firenze for all her assistance and to her, JtL and Flausa for forming a Group of Four with me to iron out a lot of picky details before I posted the thread.

Many thanks are due also to the charming young Cresswellites for their charm and patience and sheer joie de vivre. Even sczlette was a fun, patient child, and quite sociable.

I'll never think of Edinburgh as grey and stodgy ever again.

Well, maybe grey and windy. [Razz]

I owe Tuesday supper a piccy. How about you, Flausa dearest? Did any get taken on Thursday?

They don't call it Caledonia Stern and Wild for nothing.

I hope you caught enough glimpses of the cityscape to appreciate its unique character. And you must admit, it gives good cathedral.

Posted by PeteC (# 10422) on :

And a portrait gallery to warm the cockles of my Jacobite heart.

And a really neat National Museum.

Don't forget those.

And the side benefit to missing the castle gives me another excuse to travel.

But it better be sunny. [Eek!]
