I will be staying near Smudgie Towers II after my flying visit to York. I will be available for a London meet on either Tuesday or Wednesday. At this point I am still waiting to hear about some private visiting which may take place on the Monday.
I must be up early on Thursday to head for Heathrow, so a Wednesday meet will perhaps end by 8pm.
I am a little more flexible on a Tuesday pub meet. I have tentative plans to spend from lunch time on in London - either visiting V&A again or the National Portrait Gallery in the afternoon.
This means that I would, of course, be available for a lunch meet as well as a supper meet.
Any pub suggestions for London?
Of course, if anyone wants to trek to Smudgie Towers II next door neighbour, I will be glad to receive you at a pub on my non-London day.
Come one, come all!

Have to w*rk
To add insult to injury, daughter No.1 gets proper school rates (so already earning almost as much as I do) and won't be back at w*rk till the 23rd.

Surbiton is less of a trek for me than central London, but I'll wait and see what transpires. pub meets are not really my thing but will probably make an exception as I'll be at work when you are in the V and A or portrait gallery which I would enjoy. St Gwladys I would be happy to send you some chilli powder if you like.

Surbiton is easy for me...

Just down the road from Surbiton too, and those dates look OK.

Golly - a Surbiton meet! What's the rental on the pub next door, Smudgie?

I haven't checked dates/times, but Macarius & I could get to Surbiton pretty easily.

So a Surbiton meet looks like it might happen. Anyone have a spot in mind?
Wednesday night would work for me best, as I have to get up at sparrow's fart on Thursday to arrive at LHR before 0900 on Thursday.

Insofar as Monday and Tuesday are concerned, I will have a better idea of what is happening with my extended family by the end of the week. R is on shift work and will not have her April schedule until the end of the work week.

A few points:
On Wednesday evening a Surbiton meet will take place. Venues are being checked by a helpful small penguin.
On Monday, I will be doing some visiting with family.
On Tuesday I may go to London for the day, but I will not be staying into the evening. When I determine what I am doing that day, a lunch meet will probably happen if anyone is interested in that.

Venue booked for the evening of 24th April, from 5.30 onwards. It is the Berrylands pub .
It is right by the Berrylands station which is on the Waterloo-Hampton Court line, but if people come to Surbiton Station it is just a bus ride (K2) or a Smudgemobile-ride from there.
The benefits of this location are accessibility and the fact that the rather lovely new manager is willing to reserve us tables in a quiet corner AND to keep the music down low. The other part of this area is booked out to a local church group for a meeting, so it shouldn't be too rowdy or noisy at all (unless they're Anglicans, of course
). They have a special offer on a range of drinks on a Wednesday night too. Food is reasonably priced and tasty. If you would like to come along and need a lift from the station, just PM me and I'm sure something can be arranged.
Looking forward to seeing people.

One noisy local Anglican checking in (well, I've been coughing since March 6th, so I'll probably still be coughing on April 24th). Normally I'm a Very Quiet Anglican

Sounds good, a pleasant stroll from my house, and hopefully not too much of a stagger home.

As it's an early evening thing, I'll have to come from work so it'll be the 285 bus from Hatton Cross to Kingston. Does any of you locals know if it's possible to walk along the Hogsmill river from Kingston to Berrylands ? The road looks a bit shorter but I like rivers.
Posted by Smudgie (# 2716) on
:
I think it will be a case of "join us when suits you", to catch those that can come more easily earlier and those that can come more easily later and those who can sit there drinking (Appletise) all evening!
Sadly the Hogsmill walk doesn't actually go alongside the river on that one little section from Kingston to Berrylands. SO if you're choosing to walk, it will have to be rather uninspiring road walking, I'm afraid. Alternatively you could walk along the Thames into Surbiton and come up on the bus or the Smudgemobile, or simply get the K2 bus from Kingston.

ok thanks. I don't think I'll be in time for the smudgiemobile if you and Pete are getting there for half five. I can't leave work till five and first have to get the staff shuttle bus to hatton cross, so might get to Kingston around six. I'm too much of a cheapskate to pay another 1.40 for a bus that's only going to take me a bit over a mile so a road walk it is.

The Smudgemobile is willing to do toing and froing all evening if need be... it's only a relatively short run into Surbiton (quicker by car than by bus, of course) and it's my home territory. I can PM you my mobile number and you just need to give me a call when you are nearly there.

Whenever you arrive will be the correct time mld! I just need to be tucked up in bed before midnight as I have an early start on Thursday, having to be at LHR by 0900, thanks to the shenanigans of Air Canada, which cancelled my direct flight, leaving me no option but to fly into Toronto and then Ottawa arriving much later than I care to think.
I usually try to avoid Toronto which is a horrible place, and one of the more horrid attractions is their shamble of an airport.

Dearest Smudgie - you are an angel to do all this planning.

Goodness, poor Pete had sunk to page two. Can't have that!
If anyone is coming on the Wednesday and would like a lift from a station or bus stop or more detailed details, please PM me or let me know here.
Perhaps a kind and indulgent Saintly Hostly Personage would be kind enough to change the title of this thread to indicate the date and location of the meet.
This obviously does not preclude any other adventurings that Pete may choose to do with other shipmates during his London stay. Perhaps a second thread could be started for that if need be.

I'd love to have done this, being close-ish, but I now have a medical appointment I can't shift. Enjoy!

A Kind and Indulgent Saintly Hostly Personage has done even as you requested, ma'am.
Perhaps when we meet in May you can give my halo a quick polish, or get The Boy to do it.

I think sadly, we're going to have to miss this Shipmeet after all. Real life is getting a bit hectic.

Oops that should have been Smudgie in the above post!

Yeah, but think of the fun you gave me thinking of other possible variations, which I shall leave to your collective imaginations.

Just in case anyone missed this thread and is saying "oh heck"!
Just come, eh?

Good to meet you all last night and put faces to some more Ship's names.
I'm sure Pete got home safely last night, just hope the taxi turned up in good time this morning.

Yes, it was a pleasant evening, and good to put faces to names! Many thanks to Smudgie for arranging it, and very best wishes to Pete for a hassle-free journey home.
Posted by PeteC (# 10422) on

Indeed, the journey home was quite hassle free and I am home. I have even completed my income tax!
