The Common Worship provision in "Times and Seasons" provides liturgy for a service of "Stations of the resurrection", similar to Stations os the Cross, but intended to celebrate the numerous resurection appearances thoughout Eastertide. Unfortuanately it is not possible to use this service unless you have the appropriate pieces of artwork to act as a focus for each of the stations. I wonder if anyone has any suggestions of well known pieces of art that might serve this purpose? Has anyone else ever tryed to use or attended this liturgy? To say you all looking it up here, the stations are listed as: - I The earthquake Matthew 28.2-4
- II Mary Magdalene finds the empty tomb John 20.1,2
- III The disciples run to the empty tomb John 20.3-8
- IV The angel appears to the women Matthew 28.5-8
or Mark 16.3-8 or Luke 24.2-9 - V Jesus meets the women Matthew 28.9,10
- VI The road to Emmaus Luke 24.28-35
- VII Jesus appears to the disciples Luke 24.36-43
or John 20.19,20 - VIII Jesus promises the Spirit Luke 24.44-49
- IX Jesus commissions the disciples John 20.21-23
- X Jesus breathes the Spirit in the upper room John 20.22,23
- XI Jesus reveals himself to Thomas John 20.24-29
- XII Jesus appears at the lakeside John 21.9-13
- XIII Jesus confronts Peter John 21.15-19
- XIV Jesus and the beloved disciple John 21.20-23
- XV Jesus appears to over five hundred at once 1 Corinthians 15.3-6
- XVI Jesus commissions the disciples on the mountain Matthew 28.16-20
- XVII The ascension Acts 1.3-11
- XVIII Pentecost Acts 2.1-11
- XIX Jesus appears to Saul (Paul) Acts 9.1-18
or 1 Corinthians 15.8

If you go to Text Week, you can look up the scriptures and find the art suggestions for each one. A bit of work but well worth it, I presume.
Personally, I would be going to the filing cabinet to find the stack of Sunday school art posters from the 60's and 70's that no one ever seems to think are useful.

Just a remark, I think the scene of Jesus appearing to Mary Magdalene at the tomb is the most touching, incredibly marvelous, even surreal scenes in all of Scripture. I'm at a lack of superlative adjectives here, but wow - to have been her, I've often thought it's a miracle she didn't pass out & drop like a sack of potatoes.
More to the point, I'd love to see the artwork that would do that scene justice.
Blessings,
Tom

Thanks for the lnks and suggestions so far guys. Carivagio did two Conversion of St Paul's from what I can tell - one featuring heavily on the backside of a horse! I am particularly struggling with 8,9 and 10 all of which seem to be around about the same thing, and also 14 and perhaps 15. There are lots of images that could pass for 15, but I am not sure I have found any that are supposed to be of that in particular.

Sorry to double post. One option is to use entirely pictures from the Brick testament, but since I need to pursuade the boss to let me use this liturgy for the first time, I am not sure that introducing lego as a aid to devotion would be welcomed.

I like the idea of using the Brick Testament, but it might not work for everyone. I'm afraid we hit the same issue and didn't go ahead with it when we contemplated it a couple of years ago. Would be interested to know if you find anything suitable. I suspect that finding them all in the same style is unlikely, but good paintings could well work. Projection is a possibility, but loses the movement aspect of the devotion. Could you use objects rather than pictures? Though not sure how you do the earthquake!
Empty tomb could be at an easter garden if you have such a thing, maybe lectern for Road to Emmaus and an altar for him being recognised in the breaking of the bread. Or am I splitting one station into two there? I think I misinterpreted 'appears to the disciples'. At which point, a table with both the scriptures and a chalice/paten?

I thought about drawing my own stations of the cross. I strggled because the bad old evangelical in me can't make sense of apparently extra-biblical references in them.
This sounds like a good project- but would have to wait until next year because of time. Are there enough artists on board to pool to gether on this?

You're a Pope out Leo. Biblical stations were JPII who is no longer the previous Pope.

It's called 'Biblical Stations of the Cross' and i think it was invented by the previous pope.
And its this version that Times and Seasons contains a set of prayers for, if it is a useful starting point for anyone.

What about looking at* the Stations of the Resurrection - Via Lucis Way of Light by Dragoni at the catacombs of St Callistos near Rome? Might be able to get some inspiration from those.
Finding a link to some pics, I meant; rather too expensive to travel all the way to Rome!

This is such a good idea. I'll definitely be appropriating this at some point in the future.
