The cafe almost never works for me in the house; at school, it gets up and running most of the time. Anyone else having probs?

Posted by Fidei Defensor (# 17105) on :

Spurred by Enigma's thread in an inferior place, I've wandered into the caff. The place is deserted. Well, I'm there, so it's not strictly deserted. I may be consuming dinner (a happy task which will take 15 mins or so) soon, but I'll keep Faverolle open and have a shufti thereat from time to time.

George Spigot has come and gone while I downed Portuguese Cabbage, Potato and Chorizo Soup and a Clare Valley Cab Merlot.

Posted by Think˛ (# 1984) on :

I'd join but my tablet won't access the cafe cos it runs android and my pc is refusing me as it has become tempremental about java access. (I have never managed to sort this problem out since I upgraded to windows 7).

The big problems with people being ignored in the cafe come from - no away from keyboard indictator, and no option of a noise on entry. (That and a herd effect - people tend to come in and leave at habitual times dictated by time zone and mealtimes and habitual computer acvities. So some people working from home leave it on all day, some come in while running some task on the computer and leave when finished (or while checking emails etc), and if three people are having a conversation one or two may stay out of politeness and then leave all at the same time as they are running late. If it is half an hour after your bed time - do you then stay up further as a new person comes in ? Etc

To make it work - you need to keep the cafe window open when you do other things, check back periodically, and encourage people to pm you when they enter - as the pm window will jump to the front of your screen and alert you that they have come in.

I can't put this on the Hell thread, it keeps falling over. I'll phrase this for here, not Hell.

UK Shipmates choosing to leave the café at 11:30pm UK time on a week night, rather than start another conversation are really deciding that it's time for bed.

I haven't been able to get into the cafe for years. Is something supposed to happen when you download that strange file? I just tried again by following Alex's link in post 007 and opted to let Firefox 'open' it but nothing happens. Is it machine/OS/browser dependent?

Firefox won't open it, you need to use a Java 6 to open it - Sun Java possibly? Depends what operating system you're using. I'm using Linux, so what I tell you won't necessarily help beyond that

Any help gratefully received!

Which would be 45 minutes. Exactly. I went and found Mousethief in the Butler cafe.

I also sent a PM to Ariston, he joined the gang-- much fun ensued!

Also there were TONS of North American folk on the board at the time-- as there would be. (You wouldn't have noticed, you were sleeping.) As we discussed last night, we need to rally ourselves a nice little US Prime Time group.
