My local area has 2 schools and speed humps which do not slow big vehicles and motorbikes, and are believed by many to have cost and safety implications for smaller cars due to the sideways sheering stress they impose.
Ramps (across the whole road) are clearly more effective and therefore safer for pedestrians.
The local council may agree to replace the humps with ramps if the clear majority want it. How could we overcome the problem of people without smaller cars simply voting selfishly against it?

How are opinions being canvassed? You could include a question which asks people to indicate the make and model of vehicle they ordinarily use. Assuming your sample is large enough, that would enable you to see whether people with larger vehicles/motorcycles are giving significantly different answers from those with smaller vehicles.
Speed cushions are sometimes used (rather than humps) to facilitate the passage of buses and emergency vehicles and to reduce the noise that is associated with speed bumps. There have been suggestions that they are more likely to damage the tyres of vehicles that straddle them, especially if the cushion is damaged or has broken down at the sides through wear and tear. But I can't find anything online that isn't clearly partisan on this question. Motorists who are concerned about it should simply avoid straddling the cushions and allow one side of the car to go over the cushion.
As a regular cyclist, I'd hope that there might be room for a bike to get through as humps are very uncomfortable unless navigated at a considerably slower speed than is required in a car.
