This is the thread for the giving of thanks not just to God but to those people and organizations that have influenced our lives for good whether momentarily or over the longer term.

All that we have comes from God, may we all be faithful in giving thanks.

The OP is so helpful and points me to thanks.

I am grateful for the radio and all it brings. So thoughtful - like now on faith with Joan Bakewell and Ben Kingsley.

Also for my partner I'd be lost without him.

And all friends and all who pray in their own spoken or unspoken way.

Also for Sr. Wendy becket, for Carmel,

& the silent presence ever day & night

Praise to God that the Telegraph printed an amazing article by a woman who gave up smoking with God's help. Her part of the bargain was that she had to tell people that was how she did it, and she has finally brought herself to the point of being able to write about it. Just amazing on so many levels! [Yipee] Here's the link
God knows how I finally quit smoking

Mrs. S, so glad she never took up that particular vice

From a thread in Heaven:

From piglet:
Today I Commend To Heaven ...

... our neighbour/friend/builder from across the road who came over while we were at Evensong and dug out a path through the four-foot snow-bank left by the idiot* in the council snow-plough.

* who has duly been Consigned To Hell. [Devil]

From comet:
TICTHeaven my pack of friends who are willing to drop everything this spring, go to the town I'll be moving to, and build the addition onto my mother's house for me and the boys. They are not only highly respected (licensed, bonded, insured) contractors but also true blue friends. I even have them arguing amongst themselves on who gets to do which parts of the finish work. I love them all so much.

As part of the follow-up to my mum's death, I've discovered that my Dad's cousin in Helsinki is still going strong. I've been worried about her for a while and feared the worst when there was no reply yesterday, but she rang me back at 10 o'clock last night - must have been midnight in Finland (?) She had been out all evening at a dance. Now she's reached the grand old age of 93, her legs are too wobbly to dance any more, she says, but she can shout encouragment from the sidelines! [Smile]

Spent today at the wedding of one of my cousins. He was widowed some years ago (long time shippies may remember me asking for prayers for his wife in her final sickness) and this was a joyous time of new love overcoming old grief. OK, I may have mentioned sometime back that my graduation was delayed due to a poor math class placement. Since I have to delay a couple semesters anyway, I have been convinced by my faculty adviser to take a Spanish minor. So I can walk out of university with more that a basic Liberal Studies diploma.

Just updated my mom about the situation and she was... her usual encouraging self (read sarcasm here.) I went to the computer to work on stuff, downcast, and found a Scrabble request from a friend waiting for me. For some reason she'd passed her hand, and I was to open the game.

Hearty Thanks-be-to God for all the friends and medical geniuses who have prayed for/dealt with my wonky heart.

A-fib and heart failure (which doesnt really mean death is near but is very serious if not addressed) has landed me in the hospital twice. I had my 2nd electro-cardio-version in January, in which the heart is stilled, via electric shock, and re-started, hoping for a steady beat pattern.

This time it worked beautifully. That, with a combo of heart meds have me in very good shape. I'm so grateful to my cardio team, and God working through hands and intellects of my care-givers.

I can now carry something up a flight of stairs without having to stop 2 or 3 times to gasp for breath, and deal with overwhelming fatigue.

Thanks to Shippies who knew of my situation and pray mightily for me, to hope this "fix" continues.

And thanks Saints in heaven for forwarding my prayers to the Lord . <smile> Pearlie

I give thanks and praise to God for finding me a way to get a new Ford car to replace the old one that was totalled at the end of January. It took a lot of doing to raise the money, but I managed and now drive a top-of-the-range Focus Titanium, black exterior with black leather, sunroof, turbo and all the options; this is likely the last car I shall need before I retire...

Truly thanks for all the help I have received this year with things around the house that I am no longer able to do with ease and hubby can no longer do at all. My kind neighbor takes our big trash can out to the curb each week. He started doing it for us unasked and says it is nothing, but it is such a big relief not to have to pull the heavy can up hill. My son who helps me with the heavy work in the yard, and another neighbor who fixed my sink, when he dropped by and found me down on the floor with my head under the sink. I had no problem getting down there it was the getting back up that was the problem. LOL

I give thanks for wonderful friends/family (genetic and non-genetic) who accept me for (or despite?) what i am (which can't always be easy) and have helped me in ways that, without their help, i would be in a lot worse shape

this including my 4-footed buddy, Pulsar, who helps make a house a home

I give thanks for a wonderful church family -- a place where, it seems, God led me when i needed to find a community like this

I give thanks for continued good health a year and a third after a diagnosis of metastatic melanoma -- i give thanks that this diagnosis came at a time when medical developments indicate the possibility of this becoming, at the least, a life-long manageable treatable chronic illness (instead of the rather poor prognosis it has been)

I give thanks for having been created by a loving God to be part of his/her creation and for being able to appreciate it.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, God!

I shouldn't be surprised...but I am.

Yesterday, my back was so painful (after it "went" 10 days ago) that I could hardly lift one foot to put it in front of the other. I asked for prayer.
Today, it is (almost) literally as though I had no problems - there's a bit of residual discomfort in the muscles of my leg, & a little twingey stiffness, but I can bend, walk, climb stairs, twist (carefully!)I am continually marvelling and wondering "why me?" (for healing!) Thank you God!

I still have an appointment chez le medecin tomorrow, where I'll ask for strong painkillers in case of a recurrence later on in the year, but now I'm a happy healed Dormouse. Thank you for your prayers.

Six year old A is now out of hospital but he and his family are remaining in the state capital for the moment as he will be having a weekly check up for the next few weeks - they have got a room in a convent guesthouse where they are being well looked after.

I haven't been on the Ship lately...I know many of you have prayed for my partner's relief from severe RA-related pain, and I'm so happy to report that, after a great deal of red-tape wrangling and many disappointments, she was finally able to get her needed jaw surgery from a well-regarded oral surgeon the VA contracted with from outside the system.

The surgeon entered her joint from a discreetly made incision along her ear, took out any RA-ravaged shreds of cartilage and smoothed out the joint ends, then constructed a new disk out of skin and cartilage extracted from her hip area. It was a very intricate and long surgery -- 7 1/2 hours -- but went without a hitch.

Even better, my partner has not experienced RA pain in this jaw since...just the normal sorts of "mending" pain you'd expect from this sort of reconstructive surgery, and some achiness when she forgets doctors' orders regarding limiting her jaw movement.;-) Remarkably, she did not need her jaw wired, and she can speak fairly normally...she just needs to follow a mostly-liquid diet through July.

This has been a real miracle, and we're grateful to God and for the prayers and well-wishes of friends near and far.

More good news, in story form: In our sideline as antique traders, we've become friends with a fellow antique vendor who is funny, thoughtful, sweet -- but a severe alcoholic. It's been really hard for us to watch her physical health and mental state deteriorate over the 2+ years we've worked with her. She went on vacation a few weeks ago, then called in sick for her weekly stint at our antique mall...we'd been trying to call her every day for the past week but her significant other kept saying she was in bed and too sick to speak on the phone. After about the fourth rebuff, we got very concerned; was there some sort of abuse happening? Was this guy a murderer who'd lured her out of state and then killed her? (Yes, we watch too much cable TV.)

Well, today we finally got ahold of her. The bad news is that she truly was sick in bed for the past two weeks...but the good news is that in the interim she has stopped drinking and smoking. This is BIG for her, and we hope and pray for the best for her in the days to come.

Five days ago I was devastated to find I was losing the temporary job I loved, seemingly on a management whim. The next day a friend from church says "You might be the answer to the problem a school I visited yesterday is facing". Today I had the interview, and Thursday I go to meet my new class. It's only a temporary post, but it is near to home, seems a lovely environment, and will give me experience (thought a steep learning curve!!) of two new aspects of teaching which will really boost my expertise. From devastation to elation, from insecurity to greater security.. all through my friend being in the right place at the right time. God's hand in this is clear. Thank you God - one of these days I will learn to trust you more!

Thanksgiving for continued successful ecumenical services in Holy Week (a tradition on my estate for 10 years, nearly cancelled this year but saved at the last minute).

Happy Easter Monday everyone!

When, in Nov. 2011, i was diagnosed with metastasis of a particularly deadly form of cancer, i wondered in what shape i'd be for Easter 2012, and whether i'd even last that year. Here it is Easter Week 2013 and i feel as healthy and whole as ever! I give thanks too that i have been fortunate enough to have available one of the top medical facilities in the U.S., a caring health team, and insurance to pay for it. God has truly been good to me.

I give thanks that the observance of this Holy Week was particularly meaningful for me -- for other reasons as well as those mentioned above.
I give thanks for the church family with whom i celebrated it -- And i give thanks for my whole family, genetic and non-genetic.
I give thanks that in the course of this Holy Week, i was blessed with a little more insight into Jesus as a real human being, something which has tended to be a bit abstract for me.
I give thanks that, after the unpleasantly (to me) cold weather we've been having, the weather for the last several days has been a delight.
i give thanks for Pulsar, my faithful feline companion of over 4 1/2 years, who has helped make this house a home, who is in good health, and who seems to get more affectionate the older she gets.
And i give thanks for the Ship and my fellow mates, and to be able to share with shipmates thoughts (profound and otherwise), snippy comments, prayers, etc., and to learn a few things from.

in thanksgiving that my friend L was with me to snap me back to attentiveness inches before I sideswiped a car Easter Sunday morning (while driving a rented car back home from the early Easter Vigil service). I am somewhat nervous but usually a very wakeful driver. Getting up at 4:30 in the morning apparently had gotten to me and caused my attention to momentarily slip. Thanks to all who prayed, and to Lord God, who got me a few electric radiators for the weekend, as the heating had died on early Friday morning.

Some people have literally gone out of their way to provide me with heaters: a manager of the downstairs offices (which are closed at the weekend) borrowed one from a neighbour of his, and drove it here. A friend, who lives more than 50 miles (!) away hopped into his car and brought me those he had.

I guess I'm finally sorted out for now - and the landlord will have to cough up some compensation, as a working heating is part of the contract.

Thank you! [Angel]

Wonderful, Nanny!!! [Yipee] [Yipee] You have had to put up with so much -- may you enjoy your new home!

Pete, i similarly give thanks for dear friends who have helped me deal with some very important life management issues that, without their invaluable help, would leave me with problems i have been spared. Thank God for the good people in my life.

I want to give thanks that i got Pulsar, my beloved 4-footed companion, to the excellent vet for her overdue (due to transportation issues) annual check-up and teeth cleaning, and that she is in good health, and that she is now legal (with the required county-issued tag hanging from her new collar), and that she seems to be happy and more affectionate than ever. I give thanks that she is a joyful part of my life and home.

A little win causes rejoicing in my household! Praise God!

Today was rough at work. A combination of lack of experience and carelessness with paperwork meant the boss was angry at me.

I came home and was looking forward to choir rehearsal taking my mind off it all. But choir is cancelled, and I was starting to get in a state and to beat myself up.

Then I remembered my new thought: I could be better at that.

Not - I need to get my act together - or - I'm so stupid - or - why am I so shit at paperwork.

I could be better at that.

Then I said to myself: I've decided not to beat myself up about this mistake. I'm just not going to do that, because it won't make things any better and it's a waste of time.

GOD IS GOOD! [Yipee]

Not a big fan of root canals, but as an alternative to extractions I prefer them! Glad all went well for you. My wife found out earlier this week she does not need surgery for a hiaetal hernia.

Now I know we all have airplane and airport horror stories to tell, but here's a good one.

JB and I were going out of town and of course you strip off your jewelry and other accoutrements going through security. JB takes off his ring and watch and places it in his coat pocket and we go through the lines. We come our and redress, and lo and behold the ring is missing (not the wedding ring-his university one) NO RING. We search through everything. pockets, his pockets, my pockets and I start praying. NO RING.
So he goes through security thinking he dropped it or someone picked it up. NO RING. But, security says, bring back your jacket and we will X-Ray it.
Yes, shipmates, the ring had wedged itself inside the lining and there it was, bold as brass,

Great service this evening.

2 years ago the local churches' youth group has 3 members and questions were being asked about whether to continue it.

Now it is 17 strong, and 10 of them were baptised and/or confirmed at a service involving the Methodist Minister, the Baptist minister and a bishop. Each one being welcomed according to the church where they worship.

Good to see such co-operation between the denominations.

My DBS (aka CRB) check for my new job is still being processed, so I get a few weeks' break before I start my new job. (I can afford this financially, and emotionally / in terms of breathing space it suits me wonderfully.)

The project I have been w*rking on since Decemebr officially ended today and we completed the report we had ben commisioned to produce. As usual, it wasn't completed until about an hour before the presentation. A couple of people have had a month or more off, so stress and strain could have played a part, but nevertheless, we did it!

Proof of which is that the 'Next Steps' chapter was accepted, so the team stays intact and we have something to do from Monday. Problem is, it becomes an IT project (in part) so finishing on time is very unlikely.

Daughter-Unit was at work today when a woman drove through the front door right in front of D-U. Nobody was hurt, thank goodness.

D-U's hubby works in law enforcement and was by the side of the road Tuesday evening with other officers on a call. All the officers were out of their cars, dealing with the incident, when a young woman, going well over the speed limit, crashed into S-i-L's cop car. He was able to leap away from his car which was pushed into another patrol car. His car was totaled. If he had been in the car, I have no doubt he'd be in the hospital right now.

Visiting Cat, who came to us scrawny, terrified, and socially inept, has filled out and chilled out.

He is afraid of hands, and hates to be touched; but I was playing with him this week and he reached out and batted my hand *twice*.

I thought he would hate me because I put a flea treatment on his neck last night while I was asleep. Today he came in, saw me on the sofa, and after careful consideration actually climbed up and sat on the extreme opposite end of the same sofa I was sitting on. And then I got up and moved around several times and he didn't even bother fleeing in terror.

Tentatively praising,as I hope God won't take it back...

I have expressed before that I ahve a huge problem with hypervigilance-- specifically, I am very noise sensitive under certain circumstances. It has been making studying or working in a public place-- as I am often forced to do-- a nightmare.

I have been assualting it with prayer lately, put it in the God Box, etc.

Lately I have been noticing that it takes me a lot longer to get annoyed by ambiant noice while I am writing. for instance, I have been working at the school computer lab for the last 2 hours, and for the first hour two very young students were chattering beside me. It took me most of that hour to even notice they were there, and when I did I was just kind of-- oh, people there, and went back to work.

May sound like something little but it is huge for me.

Praise God.

My goal now is to be able to work in a live music venue without looking up. [Big Grin]

The doctors, nurses, radiographers at both hospitals I visited;
Himself and Herself; and
God, again.

eta: and even the drug companies, I know it is easy to mock them but they make some great products.

I'm just copying this from my latest post on the Prayers thread because I am so happily grateful

I give thanks that my latest scans were good. No growth of metastases in my lung at all even though I have not had any kind of treatment going on 3 months. I was diagnosed nearly 2 years ago -- a handful of years ago that would have meant that statistically speaking I should have been dead by now. God, you are so good!

The Ship has sailed some distance since I last posted here, and I arrive back in good company, judging by the last few posts. After a frightening encounter with Interferon that had to be stopped due to the side effects, the recovery has been strong. The support of a group of friends has meant a lot to me. One friend stayed with me during treatment at the chemo suite at the hospital two weeks after his sister had died of cancer - that was courage of a high order. So once again, I give thanks to God and his people who have travelled with me to the point where I may soon be able to describe myself as healed, if not cured, and an ex-cancer patient.

Regarding the surgery I was worrying about on the prayer thread last week, while there was some minor aggravation with the exact time changing, it went off mostly as scheduled.

It looks like I lost a knife-fight (8 little laproscopic incisions, and one larger bandage over my belly-button), and the first couple hours after surgery were No Fun, but it went fine, and I was released from the hospital next day. Mr. Otter assures me that I'm recovering well, and each day I feel a little better.

Thanks to everyone who prayed for me!

Good to hear, Otter!

Today I'm thankful for the fact that my Beloved gave his 500th Wednesday lunch-time organ recital, and for the ten years that we've been here in Newfoundland.

Sunday

My toilet started leaking, and it has been a PAIN to fix.

So thanks for the plumber I found, who came out promptly on Sunday evening and stopped it leaking with a temporary repair and then came back yesterday to do a proper repair only the repair was jinxed. He finally got it working this evening. If something could go wrong it did including him having purchased a new but faulty syphon.

The charge rate for the amount of work he put in was very reasonable.

oh yuk, I'm rather regretting this cooking image now!

It went from jack's talk of "baking"--her bun in the oven!!--to these rather unsavoury connotations...

I meant: more time for the baby to grow to a healthy weight and size and be ready to be born.

Thank God that this time has been afforded--every day in utero is precious and will have made a difference.

Rest, Jack! Feet up, relax.

Don't worry Cara, it's not bothered me at all and made me smile [Smile]

I'm thankful every day for the medical and midwifery staff looking after me. I had my moans at the start of the process, and we had a bit of a sticky time getting used to each other (it turns out I'm not the easiest patient), but I think we have good relationships now and I am confident I am in good hands. I have so much to be thankful for, and my heart goes out to those elsewhere in the world who don't have the same (or indeed any) services.

It might be too soon but ...

Eldest Son has work until Xmas and, after someone purporting to be their landlord tried to force entry on Saturday, they completed a move out of there and into a larger, tidier house at about 11pm yesterday with Mrs Sioni doing 4 runs in our car because the van they hired had to go back at 6pm.

They were grateful, we were pleased to help, the electricity and gas work. Even the combi-boiler was working when we left last night!

Thank you for posting that - you are over a year ahead of me in the same adventure, Malik. It's good news to share, and great encouragement to others. And my slight 'trouble' (which I posted on the prayer thread) was investigated at the hospital last week, and thankfully turns out to be very minor.

I am so thankful that eldest son has no pain and that the large stomach incision for his back operation is healing well. He is off the horse tablet sized antibiotic tablets he took twice a day for nine months for a supposed bone infection. No infection. He is off the cocktail of very nasty drugs which only partially controlled the pain in back for months and months. They affected his temper and personality,

In fact, he is off all painkillers.

Home and recuperating and he's also extremely grateful.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you God.

A few months ago I moved jobs. Driving home from my last day at my old job, I cried with worry and unhappiness about one particular set of siblings - I had grounds to believe they were suffering serious abuse, but I hadn't been able to obtain enough firm evidence to get a court order for them to be placed in foster care.

Today I heard on the grapevine that these children are now in foster care. I know the foster care system is far from perfect, but for these children it is a significantly better option than an abusive birth parent / step-parent.

I am so relieved and thankful.

Zoey, a few months ago I met up with a guy who had been in a children's home where I worked in the 70s and he said that coming to the home, imperfect as it was, was far better for him that remaining at his family home.

That made the whole career choice thing worthwhile.
