So what else is wrong with this picture, from a modern day perspective? I spotted that Jesus is not even wearing protective gloves while handling food products! [Eek!]

Running out of food, and needing to still a storm both call into question whether his ministry was supported by either a full (and carefully filed) risk assessment or even a proper awareness of health and safety.

Some of his parables, uttered in public places, with their pointed references to Samaritans and other underprivileged social groups, and clearly categorising some people as favoured 'sheep' and others as disadvantaged 'goats' illustrate an inadequate appreciation of the relevant local authority's equal opportunities policies.

If Jesus intends to walk on water he needs to clear it with the Galilee Fishing Cooperative, who will have some members out in a boat fishing at the time and whose work may be disrupted by this initiative. It is possible that it may discourage the fish and therefore some agreement needs to be reached about compensation for possible loss of earnings.

Assuming this is resolved satisfactorily, the next step would be for him to apply to the relevant authorities for permission to use offshore facilities in this way. He should bring a certificate in Competence in Aquatic Ambulation (at least Level 2) for permission, then sign a disclaimer absolving them of any compensation claims and produce a valid insurance certificate. The walking on water should take place in the presence only of people over the age of 16, one of whom must be a qualified lifeguard, and under no circumstances at night. Light levels will be assessed by an independent adjudicator and Jesus will be given the go-ahead when the area has been deemed safe and a suitable time and duration agreed for this event. There will, of course, be the usual administrative fees payable.

I think that, practically, a woman could not have had the access and done the things publicly that Jesus did, and be taken seriously, in that day.

They do have in common that they're both largely right wing inventions designed to counter legitimate concerns, whether it be reducing workplace injuries on the one hand, or not gratuitously offending people and propagating prejudice on the other. I have quite a thin sense of humour about these, because I think that the "Elf and Safety" and "PC gone mad" memes propagated by the right wing press are actually quite dangerous.

Yes, I noticed that conflationary trend a long time ago.

This cartoon, by a left-wing cartoonist, uses the general umbrella term "modern sensibilities" to include both racial and cultural sensitivity, and safety vigilance.

Normally, I don't care for "anti-PC" humour, for the reasons others have alluded to. But I thought that cartoon was fairly on target, given the context.

Another thing that's interesting is how, even among conservatives, there can be variance about what does and does not constitute "oppressive political correctness".

I remember when Disney came out with a cartoon version of The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, and they changed the villain from a priest to some secular authority figure.

A right-wing Jewish pundit wrote an article an article mocking the cartoon, and included the pandering to Catholic feelings as an example of "political correctness". Whereas I'd be willing to bet that Bill Donohue, while he might not have been outrighting cheering for Disney, certainly wasn't complaining about the political correct censorship.

Well, according to the wiki summary, the cartoon has a character called the Archdeacon, who is a good guy and shown as having authority over Notre Dame Cathederal.

It wouldn't surprise me if Disney changed the character's occupation in order to avoid a confrontation with Catholics. When operating under the Disney label(as opposed to Miramax or ABC), they do like to avoid controversy.

True. Although that's not so much PC as good customer relations. Catholic spend good coin going to the movies. Offending them isn't wise for a company like Disney.

Long ago, in the Nativity play in church, the props master made a mistake .
Mary was six. She gave birth behind the pulpit, and walked out, holding a doll, and said something like "behold, my son, whose name is Jesus, and I will put him in the manger."
She and Joseph walked over to tne cardboard box manger, filled with straw. They looked down into it, and behold, there was ALREADY a doll there. Joseph picked up the second doll, and said something like..."Behold our other child, Jesus' twin sister Samantha"

Earlier that year, Joseph's mummy had given birth to twins.

Brought the church congregation down! We giggled hysterically.

But surely, there is always room for a holy Samantha?

And a big plus here... All the messy body fluids are safely out of the way. Still on the floor, yes, but contained in one area, thus not causing none to slip and trip therein... Unless they deliberately went behind the pulpit. And who would do that?

Oddly enough the film version of Chocolate did change the priest for a local official. I think for much the same reasons Disney did.
