I recently, after some helpful advice* in the appropriate Heaven thread, launched a phpbb website which has garnered a few hits although my paranoiaometer is pegging.

So again I feel some concern, especially after hearing all the Lifelock commercials on the radio and reading about identity theft.

Assuming we really have much of anything to lose, what should we worry about?

And if we do, what should we do?

Is your web server on the same machine as your private correspondence and bank accounts?

Are you taking Credit Card information from anyone?

My instinct is to avoid both of those situations.

My assumption is that most internet crime picks the low hanging fruit: people not only use silly password but use the same one for every site they visit. Avoiding that won't solve all problems but you'll be at the bottom of the criminal's pick list.

OK... but what exactly can someone with less than honorable intentions do? I suspect there are people here qualified to explain in some detail - DAMHIK. [Paranoid]

Can they monitor my computer use (such as which websites I visit) without my knowing it? Can they surreptitiously search my computer files, including documents?

What else? And if they do, do they leave tracks of any kind?

And of course don't answer if the answer signals the end of forum participation. [Razz]
