Greetings, NorCal friends!
Some of you know this, but I'll be moving back home to Detroit in May. Part of the reason is I'm being laid off, which is fine and all. I'm excited to go back to the city I love so much!
Anyway, I'm still around till mid-May, because I have an oral defense of my comprehensive exams on May 14th. My job ends April 27th (Sunday after Easter). So between those two dates, I'm open to any time you all would like to get together!
In the past, my schedule of working weekends has posed a problem for shipmeets. But now, if a Friday or Saturday night, or a Saturday or Sunday afternoon works best for most of us, that'll work for me!
Anyone interested in this, make some suggestions or say when you'd be available, between, let's say, April 28 (Monay) and May 11 (Sunday; I'll want to just prepare for my defense after that).
Starting May 1, I'll still be in Oakland, but will be staying at a (generous and hospitable) friend's house to avoid paying another month's rent. But I'll have a car, so I should be able to drive somewhere if necessary and maybe give rides (assuming I can stash all my worldly belongings in my friend's house somewhere).
Thoughts on dates?

The weekend of May 3rd is the only conflict for me-- so both those dates look good. (I wasn't sure when you were leaving!)
(Actually the 4th would be fine.)

Cool! Those are "between" dates, though, so anything between them is a possibility for me.

I'd love to go to a meet. My schedule varies week-to-week, but if we can pin something down early enough (a week or so) I can arrange to be off.

I'd very much enjoy this if the timing works out (my life is too insane for other folks to plan around--do what works for you and I'll be there if I can.) Traveling mercies to you, Churchgeek--you will be missed in the Bay Area!

(sigh) OK, forgive me while I ingulge myself, I have to say this once:
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
OK! Now, let's get cracking.
How does 4/ 26 look for folk?

4/26 should be good. Let's do it - I'll ask to be off the schedule that day.

I won't be able to part of the Bay Area bidding farewell, but will hopefully be joining the Midwest welcome party at some point! If I may ask, do raise a glass / say a prayer for me when you meet: 4/26 is my ordination day.

Shoot, I read Churchgeek's dates wrong-- I guess I meant May 10. She's working the 26th.
Will do anyway, Hart!

(bumpin!)Just wanted to make sure everyone saw my correction.
And what do you want to do, Churchgeek? Restaurant? Art Gallery? Trip to the zoo?
Posted by Kelly Alves (# 2522) on
:
Well if nobody has any better ideas, a friend of mine is doing an acoustic show at Pacifica's Surf Spot, my vote for the best restaurant in town. The venue is very meet-friendly-- it's designed to be a post beach hangout place. Very very good food. Good veggie options. And good music, too. She's playing from 4-6, and they don't have her up on the calendar yet, but here is the restaurant website anyway...
Or if we want to go to churchgeek's end of things, there is a great paella place right on Broadway in Oakland that I recommended to her a long time ago. Very close to 19th Street BART.

I have a hand-fasting to attend on the 10th at Noon in the Oakland hills, but a late afternoon or evening time would work for me. It would be good to see churchgeek off as she di-verges from the Bay Area.

I could do May 10th in the evening, but I need to keep my nighttime driving on this side of the bay if possible (public transit is good.)
ETA: I'm in Oakland.

Sounds like May 10 is shaping up!
The place I was going to stay May 1-15 sorta fell through (a family dealing with stuff that would be best without a stranger in their home; they'll still put me up if I can't find anywhere else, but I want to give them the space they need). Anyone in the Bay Area have a spare room or a couch, and don't mind a cat?

Ok, last I heard, you found a place on the Peninsula. With that in mind, where do you want to have your meet?
Posted by churchgeek (# 5557) on
:
Yes, I'm in South City. I'm open to a meet wherever it's most convenient for the most people. In fact, I'm happy to let you all plan it entirely and just let me know the details! (I've got so much on my plate right now.)

How about something within walking distance of Daly City, Colma or South SF BART station?
Posted by Kelly Alves (# 2522) on
:
There is a "international row " of restaurants right outside the Junipero Serra street exit of DC BART. Colma and South City have eating areas a bit farther away., but Grand Avenue in SSF might be a long walk away, but doable. Just about every Central/ Latin American cuisine you can think of is represented on that strip.

So sorry to have to bow out due to personal issues: Churchgeek, I wish you the absolute best.

Sudden thought : churchgeek, remember that crepe place in Glen Park? ( south end of SF proper, block away from BART, Cool book store right next door. )
Posted by churchgeek (# 5557) on
:
Sorry to hear that, infinite_monkey! I hope things are OK - just a conflict of plans...
I have another thought: if it's a choice between several places, let's pick one that's most conducive to conversation.

BJ's? BART is right behind Tanforan, and you seemed to like the pizza last time we went...
Posted by Kelly Alves (# 2522) on

OK! churchgeek has spoken, If you want to attend the churchgeek memorial meet, go to the Glen Park BART Station, get out, go to 2885 Diamond (it's about a block north of the station-- head toward the library) and find the Bello Cafe. We will be there at 3:00. The place closes at 8:00.
Simple basic coffee shop with quiche, sandwiches, and stuff-- I think it is cash only, but an ATM is nearby.

Sorry I missed you too, Churchgeek: we got asked to be in one of the wedding photos which was quite an honor but it meant we didn't get out of the wedding until like 3:20. Have fun back home in Detroit.
