I am planning on raising a pint to Ken tonight in the Museum Tavern, where we used to have shipmeets and where I first met him.
If anyone would like to join me I'll be there from 6ish.

I'll try to head that way on my way home.

Was I not lurgy-bound I'd be there like a shot to raise a pint of Appletize... but will be there in spirit.

There in spirit.
I'll be making every effort to get down there for the funeral.

I can't travel that far for a pint. But, I will crack open a bottle of beer this evening in his memory.

It'll probably be a glass of red wine, but it will be in memory of ken. What a man!

We'll raise a glass from down here this evening.
I remember when I first met him at a WInchester meet many moons ago, when he brought a (then) young eyeliner...

I will also be there in spirit. I'll be raising a glass tonight in his honour though.

I will be there, for a little while at least.

I don't know if this is appropriate to mention, but the UK TV channel Dave has recently started showing old episodes of Only Connect. I believe that the episode that Ken appeared on is currently on their On Demand service.

Rosamundi's going to come too.

Shippies who are at Greenbelt this year (I am volunteering in the Access area), could we arrange a drink in Ken's memory there?

Will be there in spirit, and raising a glass of apple juice here at home.

Raise one for us. We may possibly look in later in the evening, but to be honest we are all pretty knackered.
We hope to meet as many of you as can make it at the funeral.
Sarah (aka busyknitter) and Chris (ken's brother) and Muriel (ken's Mum)

Part of me would love to be there, but - I can't. I'm sorry. I'm knackered. Thank you so much for doing it, though. Dad would have approved, I think. I plan on arranging a longer-notice memorial shipmeet soon but...a bit later.

A few of us have gathered and raised a glass in memory ~ rosamundi and I were planning to visit tonight. There are photos maybe, if I'm organised.

Another who'll be there in spirit.
Posted by Yangtze (# 4965) on

We raised a glass or two (or in some cases three) and have now departed.
As Persephone Hazard said, it's what he would have wanted. Speaking for myself, it was also what I needed. After a teary day to be with others who Understand. And to know we're joined together with all the others around the world who were also lifting glasses today.
Though we are many we are one body. I give thanks for Ken and for this Ship which brought us together.

It's at times like this that I regret leaving the London area.
I'll raise a glass or two at the next opportunity to a wonderful shipmate!

In my case it's the Bishops Finger for ken. I hope he approves my choice of beverage.

I don't normally drink during the week but tonight...well it would be rude not to do so. Cheers, ken!

Was off the internet most of the day working, only found out a few minutes ago. A gin and tonic for me - cheers, Ken!

When the memorial meet is organised would others like to raise a glass to Ken within 24 hours of the London meet, so as to spread the meet throughout the world?
By 24 hours I mean either prior or after.

Given the time difference I'm sure you all are well on your way. Raise a glass for me, that is if one of you is clear enough and nerdy enough to be online and on board right now. Here's to Ken!

I just realised that today was the anniversary of the Act declaring England to be a Commonwealth, May 19th 1649. A nerdy civil war history fact I hope Ken would have liked.

We did last night. Have a beer for him on our behalf at the meet please.

I'm beerless, so it's cognac from here.

I really appreciate you posting this -- I had never seen it. I found and watched it online last night (possible even for someone not in the UK, though not through On Demand) and thoroughly enjoyed seeing Ken in fine form. What a clever man.

Can it be accessed through the BBC web site outside the UK?
Posted by Curiosity killed ... (# 11770) on

It's Dave - and here. I'm not sure how Trudy accessed it outside the UK, but I got an answer Googling, just not going to put it up here.
You want the Birkbeck Alumni episode.

A very popular video hosting site well known to almost everyone has an excellent selection of BBC quiz and panel shows, including Only Connect, Series 1, episode 2 featuring Ken. I'll say no more.

I had a first-class American burger last night, which apparently Ken had never had and it makes me sad that he will never have one. And a bitter. I didn't post because I was, well, rather drunk after the beer and the wee drams.

I shouldn't have watched that Only Connect - when I saw him last week he did that hand flutter and shrug a few times when he couldn't find the words for something.
More frivolously - when we were chatting about appearing on Only Connect - can't remember if it was at a meet or another time - he said he really should have got the half question and was quite cross he didn't. And the team they were up against went on to win the whole series, so they didn't feel too bad about it. In fact, the team they lost against have won all the matches between series winners too, including against a team led by David Stainer's wife who won a couple of years later.

A nerdy civil war history fact that I bet he would have dredged up without breaking a sweat, segued into a discussion of the context to the nerdy fact, moved through a bombastic and spirited deconstruction of the received wisdom on the topic, finishing with drawing some unexpected parallel with a current affair and an announcement he was off to the pub. All served up with that characteristic combination of humour and intensity.
I never met him but I always read his prose with a particular sort of speaking voice in mind, a combination of jokey banter and a desperation to communicate the important details that would help you appreciate the bigger picture.

That matches my (online-only) perception of Ken perfectly. I remember him comparing Purgatory discussions to the kind of discussion you have in a pub, with a core group discussing and people occasionally wandering over to interject comments.
