Typhoon Hagupit ("Ruby") and I are scheduled to meet in Manila, Philippines, on Monday evening. Your prayers for safe travel and arrival would be appreciated.
Oh, and I don't know when I will next get decent internet access. Could be a while...

Be careful, ok? Maybe keep some simple emergency supplies with you. There are emergency flashlights that have a radio and a cell phone charger. FWIW.

Thanks everybody.
While the weather agencies predicted that I would be flying into 60-100 kph winds and that there was a significant chance of flooding where I am staying due to torrential rain, in fact we landed just fine and ended up having merely some medium heavy rains which barely buckled the river's water levels.
Who says prayers don't work? Thanks again.
Internet sucks though, so I will be quieter for a while (even more answered prayers, eh? ).

Not perhaps in the same league, but dirty weather coming in from the Atlantic. Tonight will be wild in the Isles and wet in the West: ferries not sailing, flooding expected. And snow to follow.

I don't think it's coming from this particular bit of the Atlantic - it's been calm, sunny and very cold here for the last couple of days.

Coming from Iceland - apparently what's known in the trade as a 'weather bomb'. 45 ft waves off Barra, and winds to 80 mph to come.

A much lesser, but fierce, storm is rolling into the San Francisco Bay area today. SF itself doesn't usually do--or need--big storm preparations. But schools are even closing--and, given that most parents hold jobs outside the home, and may not be able to find or afford childcare, that may mean a lot of kids home alone. (I always worry about that.)
The city is, commendably, trying to get the homeless into emergency shelters. But, in non-storm situations, we have many more thousands of people on the street than we have shelter beds.
Anyway, prayers appreciated.

Re SF storm:
I'm ok. Power was out this morning. Other than that, I'm fine. Lots and lots of problems all over from the storm.

It's not that bad so far-- just incrdibly wet. i was freaked out, too, though, as the SFUSD closed all schools. Literally, the last emergency school closure in the district was 9/11. If the SFUSD is cutting kids some slack, one of the four horsemen must be on the way, I thought.
A city of working parents having to relocate their kids is nothing to sniff at, though. And my sis was not only rained out of work downtown, but flooded out of her house next to the redwood city mud flats. She had to hide out in our den until the tide went out. But hey-- less drought! I was thinking about you Californians when some of your weather made it on to the "wild weather" report on the Canadian Weather Channel earlier today.
Hope you're all safe and well. ![[Votive]](graemlins/votive.gif)

One thought that popped into my mind today as we watched the traffic go past was this:
This is the first really big storm we've had in the Bay Area in six years. That means that there is a whole group of drivers out there on the roads who have never driven in a rainstorm.
California drivers are notorious as it is for forgetting from year to year that things change when it rains. (¨It takes longer to stop on a wet, oily road? Are you sure about that?¨) Introducing a flock of novices could add a whole level of scary to that.
(We had the time to talk about things like that while the power was out and we didn't have much to do but clean up.)

Lots of storms here, but no cyclones (yet!).
All this as we commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Cyclone Tracy, which destroyed most of the city early on the morning of Christmas Day, 1974.
