As all concerned parties may already know, I'm going to be in Manchester (UK) this January to present a paper at a conference. The conference is Jan. 9-10, but I don't fly back home till the 14th...which leaves time for a Ship meet! Yay!

Possible dates/times:

Anyone interested? I'll leave it to the locals to pick a good spot.

I should be free for at least bits of the Saturday or Sunday - it depends a bit on covering the on-call for work. I'll be working the Monday but should be free in the evening; and I don't normally work Tuesdays. I'd love a Manchester ship meet. We don't have them nearly often enough.

Hi Folks

I could do a Monday evening too - weekend might also be possible, with a bit of planning around childcare. Incidentally I just mentioned to WW about the last Manc shipmeet in Chorlton - a while ago, I think.

cheers
Mark

Yay! Even if it winds up being just the 3 of us, it would be fantastic.

Posted by LRP (# 5013) on :

Sat evening is easier for us but Sun Mon maybe a possibility.

Posted by churchgeek (# 5557) on :

If any of you can think of any locals who should know about this but hasn't checked in, let them know to look here. I'd PM people myself if I had any idea who lived anywhere near Manchester. (As it is, I don't even know what other cities are nearby, within what people would consider a reasonable distance to go for a Shipmeet.)

I can possibly do Saturday night, but I need to consult with the possible bed for the night

Posted by balaam (# 4543) on :

As LRP said Saturday is best for us. Any other day and we'd need notice to arrange w*rk.

I can make any time Saturday or Sunday.

Posted by Jack o' the Green (# 11091) on :

In fact, I'm on A/L that week, so could do Monday or Tuesday as well.

Posted by churchgeek (# 5557) on :

If we do Saturday, just note that my conference is over at 5pm somewhere on the university campus, and I don't know for sure that I won't need to linger for any reason. That's why I said 5:30, but even that might be pushing it if the meet is across town (unless someone's driving and would pick me up)! Just to keep in mind. I'm a night owl, myself, regardless of time zones, so I'm OK if it's a bit later, but I want to accommodate the most people - the more the merrier!

I can now do anytime except the Tuesday evening.

Would I be right in guessing we're looking at a bar/cafe/resaurant meet, especially if it's the Saturday evening? I don't know the University area terribly well, but there are a few places in the city centre or the Northern Quarter that might not be too busy early evening. There's even one or two that might not be too taxing on the purse-strings. (I'm sensing the opportunity for me to go on a research trip. Or two...)

Are we working On meeting up Sat evening may look at staying over till sunday but can travel over an. back in a day

Posted by churchgeek (# 5557) on :

It was sounding to me like most people preferred Sat. evening, but I think it's still an open question.

Going to miss this opportunity by 10 days, but can recommend Manchester Shipmeets (oh dear, was that a decade ago??).

May I presume to

*bump*

this thread?

Where were we up to?

Posted by Gamaliel (# 812) on :

I might be up for this - if people could keep me informed on arrangements then I might be able to make it too ...

Posted by LRP (# 5013) on :

I think we were up to committing to date time an Venue.
Let's start with Date Sat 10th Jan early evening.
Venue somewhere within the printworks if close to University.

Any other ideas.

Whose up for this.

I'm really looking forward to meeting people!

Sat 10th works OK for me...

I'm afraid Saturday is now dodgy for me as I'm on call. I might risk a bit of socialising anyway but if there's a secondary meet sometime over churchgeek's weekend I'd be up for that.

Posted by churchgeek (# 5557) on :

I'll be in town until the wee hours of Weds. morning the 14th. So Tuesday night is probably out (unless really early), but other than that, there are options.

It kinda sounds like people might not be into doing this.

This afternoon I'll post some links for bars, restaurants etc. I can't right now because my home computer is having some sort of hissy fit.

If folks are thinking of the Printworks, it's quite civilised Saturday early evenings (gets a bit loud later). There's a tram stop just next door at Shudehill. There's a Café Rouge, which is always reliable. Norwegian Blue is a fun place to meet but I think only does food during the day and gets very disco-ey of an evening.

Posted by LRP (# 5013) on :

We have been to Harvester there if anyone wants a pub meal. But there are e other numerous options. Norwegian blue could make a good meeting point although not been in before.

Posted by Adeodatus (# 4992) on :

If people want to get away from the Printworks at any point, it's handy for the thoroughly splendid Northern Quarter - link. For bars, I'd personally recommend Trof NQ and Odd - both quite studenty (most of the NQ is) but a nice atmosphere.

My own favourite place in the NQ is the Soup Kitchen, but for me it's better for daytime visits. Evenings, it gets very crowded and sometimes has extraordinarily loud music.

Posted by LRP (# 5013) on :

Shall we say 5·30 Norwegian Blue then decide where to eat,as its now 9PM Thursday evening and l think we need to make some decisions.

Balaam will have a crutch with him and will be wearing a blue checked flat cap.

Posted by Adeodatus (# 4992) on :

Well, churchgeek has landed. I'll try and join you at Norwegian Blue at 5.30 on Saturday, as long as I don't get tied up with work. If anyone needs to Google-map, NB's postcode is M4 1WZ.

Thank you Adeotus for the info and update on Church geek.

Posted by churchgeek (# 5557) on :

Yay! I look forward to it! I may be a bit late, depending on if the conference ends on time, if I end up in a conversation with anyone, or if I walk (just over a mile, Google maps says). The conference is over at 5pm. I won't have internet access during the day, sadly.

You'll know it's me when you see someone in mostly black with Detroit-related clothing and a bag with the Great Lakes in glow-in-the-dark paint (which probablly won't be glowing unless it's really dark).

See you soon! [Yipee]

Sorry, I forgot to post on here. My possible bed for the night elected to come down here to stay this weekend.

Hope you all have a brilliant time.

Bah, missed it! Had youngest daughter's birthday party (for which she was poorly [Frown] ), then oldest daughter's swimming lesson (at 5:30, ironically enough).

Still never been on a shipmeet... will have to pay more attention for the next one...

Well last night I risked socialising on an on-call night, and was very glad I did (even if I had to look on with drooling alcoholic envy while you drank wine and I had to stick to water!).

I've just got back from an afternoon of walking round Manchester with churchgeek. Thanks, churchgeek, for indulging my enthusiasm for the city!

I'm really sorry to have been unreliable and to have missed out - family stuff took me out at the last minute. Churchgeek, I hope you have a great conference, and good memories of the city.

I hope you all had a good time. I've been plugged out of the Ship for far too long and have only just noticed this.

Perhaps I'll start to loiter in these parts again. [Smile]

I've been having a splendid time here. I love your city! My brief sojourn is, of course, not enough time. But special thanks to Adeodatus for the personalized tour!

I'm so pleased you've enjoyed your time in Manchester.

Adeodatus is a good man. I'm very sure you'll have been properly taken care of.

Aw, you guys! [Hot and Hormonal]

(And Scrumpmeister, it would be great to see more of you - here or IRL.)
