I am totally confused by the hostly decision to move this thread to the 8th day.

Moving it to All Saints I could understand but the opening poster indicated that he had problems with the church because it falls so far short of what it is supposed to be, not ISTM that he is faith-free. So it seems somewhat presumptuous to move the thread into a faith-free zone PLUS by moving the whole thread, aren't the hosts now breaking the "rules" of 8th Day?

My reading of the "rules" of 8th day indicates that the responses made by several of us in Purg that encouraged King in Exile to hold onto Jesus and find other means of Christian fellowship contravene the non-prosletyising/faith free rules of 8th Day?

Evangeline, I too was confused, as I read the thread in 8th Day without realising it had been started in Purg, and found it very odd.

The thread adjured king in exile to "hang on to Jesus" and to seek a church, and expressed "prayers that God's love will be very real to you". This, coming from a faithfree perspective, was very odd.

Of course, I can see how the OP would lead people to think it belonged to the Faithfree board. To be honest, I don't know where it would belong best. but Faithfree does not seem to be the place, according to the responses noted above. That sort of advice is just what I object to (as a faithfree person).

Your opinions are noted.

I encourage you to partake of the madness in our method for a while, to see if it suits you after all.

Sometimes it's hard to place a thread. This one definitely didn't seem to be Purgatorial.

I thought it might have traction in Faithfree on the basis of the OP. There was some debate backstage about where it belonged before offering it to Faithfree, but that was the consensus - and an Eighth day host agreed to take it, so I moved it (a message automatically informs the OPer).

You can hardly expect all the posts on a moved thread to fulfil all the guidelines for its new board - this regularly happens when Hell threads get moved to Purgatory, for instance. The guidelines apply to posts subsequent to the move. How the thread evolves is up to contributors on the board where it arrives, as moderated by its hosts.

Ah. Thanks for explaining, Eutychus.

The rules of the board to which the thread has been moved censor the responses that can be made though, so rather than evolving, the thread has been pushed in a very different direction from that which evolved in Purg.

A personal opinion.

Perhaps it is worth mentioning that Faithfree is operating with experimental guidelines which restrict posting activities. In general on SoF Shipmates are allowed to post whatever they like in response to any thread provided they stay within the 10Cs. Guidelines for the separate boards do not normally get in the way of that. Faithfree is an exception to that.

I think Faithfree is a good experimental board and I recognise the reasoning behind its guidelines, but if it is to co-exist with other boards then its Hosts and Hosts of other boards are free to agree transfers on a best fit basis, recognising that some of the earlier posts may not necessarily fit in with the way Faithfree works.

The alternative, that Faithfree be somehow 'protected' from any such 'contamination' suggests to me that it might be better provided as a Private Board and subject to Private Board guidelines. That would seem to go against the 8th Day conception.

So I guess a bit of give and take is bound to be necessary on occasions.

Just to add: I too felt it was inappropriate to move it. However, I accept what has been said and that no future posts will be allowed to contravene the Guidelines.

My understanding of faithfree is that it is as much for those who find themsleves with faith but outside the Church (such a Schroedingera Cat by his own characterisation) as it is for those without faith inside the Church. Those both without faith and outside the Church are obviously included.

If this is the case the thread fits entirely.

So long as people don't respond to encourage faith either within or without the church? That seems to be the consensus understanding.

I did feel that there was a strong element in the thread that fitted within the Faithfree idea. Obviously, it isn't a perfect fit, because it has developed somewhere else, but there was, I felt, an important aspect that might find better traction in Faithfree.

As always, and as others have said, a thread that fits somewhere between a number of boards, is always going to have a problem fitting in when it has been moved. The alternative is to always leave threads where they are and close them if they go slightly off topic. I am not sure that is a better option.

I thought at one time (but I am probably wrong) that there was an icon for threads moved to a new board, much like the one showing on the board where it moved from. Is this my imagination or have we stopped using them?

I've read the thread again to the point where it was moved, and can't see why any of the responses shouldn't be allowed on the 8th day board. Where are the 'hang on to Jesus' comments? People were making positive suggestions as to how to proceed, mostly expressing their own experiences where 'church' hasn't been all they hoped it would be.

Surely giving up on a church should not necessarily be taken as giving up on faith, God, or the whole Christian community? Must posters on the 8th day explore issues only from an atheistic perspective? If so, I think it should have been moved to All Saints too.

It's my understanding that the Purg Hosts conferred with the 8th Day Hosts before the move, so it wasn't done thoughtlessly. That, and the 8th Day Hosts agreed. As RooK said, why don't we see how it works out?

We've never had an icon for threads that were moved from somewhere else, just the one for threads that have been moved to somewhere else.

Thanks. I must have imagined it.

Figured this fit in this discussion as well.
