References to Boy Scouts are USA specific. We don't have "Boy Scouts" here in the UK. They're known simply as "Scouts.

We've never had "Girl Scouts" in this country either.

A slight hiccough has occurred, the 10th March is a Tuesday and therefore cannot be the 4th Sunday in Lent. Having checked with The Independent and the more customary BBC page, I think you are five days early.

I know most inconsiderate of these Christians to have festivals that are set by the moon and the day of the week rather than being strictly calendrical.

16 March would make it Mothering Monday
11 March is UK National No Smoking Day

(We also have World Book Day on 5 March and Red Nose Day on 13 March)

Posted by Spike (# 36) on :

16th March is indeed a Monday. Mothering Sunday is on the 15th. I would also point out that Mothering Sunday isn't just in the UK as stated. It's a worldwide festival in the church calendar.

March the 8th may well be the beginning of Daylight Saving Time in the USA, but not necessarily in other parts of the world

Why not just link to an online almanac (or small set of almanacs) and have shipmates post their own birthdays as they come up ?

It looks like this thread must be quite onerous for you to maintain.

MB, rather than using the Almanacs to pick out dates to create a list, how about posting links to the Almanacs but letting Shipmates select the Feast Days from them they want to highlight? Less work / stress for you as well as for the All Saints Hosts - – Win!

Also, if Shipmates want their birthday / anniversary or any other day of note mentioned on that thread, then they post it. No post, no mention. Less work for you and also helps keep the thread current. Less editing for the All Saints Hosts – Win!

So it's St Patrick's day - *waves to various Irish shipmates* - I don't get why it celebrates the day he was enslaved though. Surely, if some one was going hold a celebration in your honour you'd want it the day you were freed ?

Posted by Ariel (# 58) on :

It isn't the day he was enslaved. It's supposed to be the day he died.

A Happy St Patrick's Day to all, btw.

That's the date the website started. Ship of Fools had been around for a long time before that.

I should also point out that the correct title is simply "Ship of Fools" - there's no "The" in the title.

I see it is Debbie Harry's 70th birthday. That's just wrong (and I suppose we should really call her Deborah now) and while she has aged, she has done so very well.

If people are fortunate and look after themselves, seventy must be the new fifty. My s-i-l is similar, which must bring some joy to my brother who has Parkinson's.

Motherboarde, the 3rd August has not been bank holiday in NSW for many years, nor any other date. We do not have official bank holiday here. Your source is out of date.

Many years ago, the Labor Premier of the state abolished bank holiday. There was a huge outcry from public servants who were about the only non bank employees to benefit from the holiday. Other employees in shops etc and other businesses did not get it. It was then surreptitiously added to the raft of public holidays around Christmas. They can still claim the day, but it is not bank holiday.
With advent of cards and ATMs, who needs to visit the bank? Very few cheques are written, cashed or deposited down here in comparison with card and machine use.

Your source is very much out of date.

Yes, and I've pointed this out several times. Not only that, but she hasn't posted in eons.

Kittyville, it used to be a big holiday here, not just bank employees. Civil service, many legal people and anyone else who could wangle it. That is what changed.

I check Time and Date, Project Britain, and 4 other places for dates and times for every continent and country and I still get it wrong! DAMN, DAMN, DAMN.

Anyone want to volunteer for Australia and New Zealand dates, because obviously, I got it all wrong.

The times are a'changing and we all have to move on.

This will be the last few days for this thread, but as I said, new things are coming, so watch All Saints for a new thread.
