As it looks as if we might get our first sn*w-day of the season on Friday, I thought maybe those of you who live in places not blessed with actual snow-flakes might like to make your own.

If you put your location as "SOF" we can have a look at each other's snow-flakes and compare notes - I know that by Ship standards, I'm a rank amateur.

Happy time-wasting! [Devil]

I always put my name as "GK" and location as "SOF". I think I did some a couple of months ago. And I think the flakes pretty much live forever, so you can look at SOF flakes from years gone by.

I just made three snowflakes, and then I did a search for 'fineline', because I knew I had made some before, and I discovered there are 56 snowflakes there that I made, under 'fineline' with location 'SOF'. The other ones I made were in year 2011. The ones I made then were more varied - some had smiley faces on them, and I even made one that said SOF and Fineline on the actual snowflake. [Smile]

I did one, and was quite pleased with it, and then I looked at other people's from SOF, and I was shamed.

I like Boogie's faces and Smudgie's penguin. [Smile] Trudy, you can make fancy snowflakes by doing lots and lots of scribbles, again and again. When I'm not making a face, I just randomly scribble over mine lots of times and see what happens. [Smile] It's fun to experiment with scribbles and see them turn into pretty snowflakes.

I've done one, but I'm seriously impressed by Fineline's and Lydarose's collections. Next time I'm using my graphics pad.

Note for newbies:

If you'd like to be notified of any comments posted on your flake, put your e-mail address in the space provided. A notice will be sent to you for each comment. No one else can see your address, so you won't get spammed or harassed.

This way, you'll know of comments, without having to do a search for all your flakes. And you'll be able to easily go to the site and respond to any comments. Sometimes, interesting discussions can get going.

Love this idea - now I made a more detailed face, with some attempts at cross-hatching. [Smile] Though I should probably stop now - I have 140 snowflakes on there now! I made lots yesterday.

I love your flakes, Lyda Rose. [Smile] Though you are hard to do a search for, because you add the date to your name, so I find you randomly in the SOF search instead.

Thank you, Fineline!

I've found that doing a search on my flakes has gotten weird since the last Snowdays maintenance a week or two ago. It used to be I would put in my name without a date and it would automatically take me to the last flake I made. Now it sometimes takes me to 2010 or 2014 or something. [Ultra confused] (I go look at my flakes sometimes so that I can reply to messages people leave. I used to use the email function, but I've found I'm less likely to look at my email daily than visit Snowdays. I'm a slacker.)

I think the search function might be a bit faulty. I did a search for your name and there were zero hits. I did a search for my name, after I'd made over a hundred snowflakes, and there were only 32 hits, and they were my oldest ones. I did another search for my name, and then there were 64 hits, and another search found all the hits, and another search found zero hits.

I went looking for yours and couldn't find them! So I settled for making one special. [Smile]

The prices on the craft items are pretty reasonable-- if a regular snowflaker turns up as your Secret Santee, I encourage you to check out the store.

When you make them, there's a window where you can put your e-mail address so you're notified of any comments, so you can look them up. (IIRC, it's below the box where you can put a message.) Your address is kept private. I have a folder for them, and a filter so the notices go straight to the folder. In all the years I've made flakes, I think I only got one nasty comment.

FWIW.

A cool feature of the programming on the site is that it will retain the flake you built even if you lose internet connection.

And the magnify feature is also a mixed blessing. Someone viewing needs to magnify their view to catch fine details.

On one of my face snowflakes, someone who called himself Satan commented that I should come and work for his company - I guess the face must have looked a bit evil! [Killing me]

Sometimes I make them by randomly scribbling all over the snowflake really fast to see what will happen. And then I keep making more random scribbles to see how the snowflake changes.
