I'm trying to find a picture which was used for the Caption Competition circa 2001, about four years before the 'Past Winners' list starts in 2005.

It's a long shot I know, but I remember it, perhaps someone else does too:

It showed a procession of people trooping up from a mediaeval sailing ship, to meet a welcoming party on shore. The procession was headed by an older man proudly accompanying a younger woman, and the purpose of the journey was either for her to marry the local king, or to take up her rightful place as local queen.

Either the ship was Scandinavian and the destination Scottish, or vice versa, and the original purpose of the picture seemed to have been to point up the saintliness of the bride/rightful queen.

And the winning caption, I think, was 'Ship of Fools meetup exceeds expectations' or similar.

Does this jog any memories? It's a very long shot but I thought I'd give it a try.

I can't help with the picture but the "saintly queen" sounds like Queen / Saint Margaret of Scotland, whose ship was blown off course in a storm, forcing her to land in Scotland in 1068. She subsequently married the King of Scotland, Malcolm.

I've had a shot at googling to no avail. I tried "Saint Margaret Procession" and some of the images were of Margaret Thatcher's funeral. [Eek!]

Could it have been a painting by Sir William Allen called 'Mary Queen of Scots Arriving at Leith 1651'? I can't give a link but I'm sure it could be googled!
For some unknown reason there was a print of that picture on the wall on our dentist's waiting room. I must have spent hours looking at it over the years!

Thank you Diomedes, but the picture I'm thinking of wasn't an oil painting, more of a textbook/tract illustration. It was sort of flatter and brighter.

I wish I had a wider visual art vocabulary so I could explain more clearly.
