Thanks to a hugely generous Big Birthday Gift, I'm planning a coast to coast trip in the States. At the moment I'm thinking train from San Francisco to Chicago, then Chicago to Pittsburgh. Any thoughts/suggestions? And am I daft to be thinking of doing it in November??

It'll be pretty cold, especially in the middle of the country, but with luck you will avoid the heavy snow that impedes travel. That comes in December/January/February.

If you come through the Phoenix area it will be warmer. November is usually beautiful -- and we can also give you a warm welcome at a Phoenix Shipmeet! From the Phoenix area you could go up to the Grand Canyon.

Fall in the Bay Area is gorgeous-- the best time of the year.

Depending on time, and how you're planning to travel (car is more flexible than train, but it's a very long drive) there would be Shipmates at various points along the way. A string of meets would be possible - assuming you (and whoever you are with) want to meet people who may be just names on the screen.

A shipmeet or two could be fun - I loved the one I went to in Nashville a few years ago. Not sure driving is a good idea - I'll be travelling alone.

Kelly, I have a clergy friend in the Bay Area who I hope might provide a bed for a night or two.
