Okay, I know, there is absolutely no point getting angry at a man who is, as I wrote on YouTube, the arsehole of the body of Christ. There is no way he is ever going to see the error of his ways, or become a good person. There's probably little chance of him ever attaining a grain of human spirit.
But here goes anyway.
Browsing my twitter feed this morning, I came across this: YouTube video WARNING: the video contains some extremely inflammatory and hateful language relating to the Orlando shootings, is definitely Not Safe For Work, and you may find it very upsetting
[ETA: The video has since been removed from YouTube for hate speech. —AA, HH]
So where do you start with this kind of thing? It occurred to me that it's not sufficient to dismiss him as a drooling, swivel-eyed nutjob - his views are extreme, but they're on a spectrum, and I've heard language not too dissimilar from ministers in the Church of England. Right now, I find that I honestly want to cause this man some form of extreme pain, and I don't like feeling like that. So I thought I'd come here, where at least the decent folk of the Ship can have a good communal yell at him. [ 14. June 2016, 03:24: Message edited by: Ariston ]

Taking Paul's advice from Romans 12 I think we should be sending him Rainbow decorated cakes, Skittles, anything delicious (fattening) and brightly coloured. Heaping burning coals on his head, allowing for God's wrath, and possibly helping him on the way to an obesity induced MI or stroke.

This is where a belief in the full armamentarium of the afterlife is so nice. Dante's Inferno, that's where Pastor Steve should wind up. But first, the judgment, where Jesus Himself looks him in the eye and says, WTF, dude?

Holy shit, you weren't exaggerating. I started the video and managed only a few seconds of it. What a loathsome individual.
Sorry, he's not the arsehole of the body of Christ. That would make him part of the body of Christ. Though unpleasant, the arsehole is a part that has a vital function, it's where the body gets rid of the shit. This individual is the shit that we flush down the toilet.

I'm glad it's been taken down. Pastor Anderson's "good news" was that there were now 50 fewer "sodomites" in the world. His only qualm was that the gunman was a "vigilante" - it's the role of "righteous government" to kill sodomites.

This is more common than you'd think (or probably like) among certain flavors of American Christian. For example, Kevin Swanson advocates the death penalty for homosexuals and can still get Republican presidential hopefuls to come to his events. Scott Lively is still considered an evangelical in good standing despite (or perhaps because of) his work lobbying the Ugandan government in favor of capital punishment for homosexuals. For something that's supposedly out-of-bounds for Christian belief, a significant number of influential Christians with sizable followings seem to advocate executing homosexuals.

This might be the place for hellish ranting, but as a point of information the objection to IVF from pro-lifers is that many more embryos are created by the process than can be implanted and are therefore either destroyed or stored indefinitely.

What should give many pause is that the same "clobber verses" - at least in the OT - that are used to condemn homosexuality are the same ones that are used by these would-be ministers for religious genocide to advocate for the death penalty. Leviticus doesn't just say "don't put your willy up other men's bottoms"; it also says "and if you catch someone doing it, kill them."
At least these wankstains are consistent.

They're fucking Biblically illiterate there. Paul quotes that when he's developing his election theology and is at pains to point out God's favouring of Jacob is irrespective of anything they'd done.
I mean, I have enough issues with Paul's point here, God knows, but at least I know what it actually is.

I had actually just come in from a bit of sun bathing, wearing a bikini that I only wear in the privacy of my backyard. Had I answered the door thus attired, I could probably have caused the whole bunch to go blind.

So...er...what if you're not English-speaking and thus don't have a KJV Bible? Does God only like English-speakers and hate 'furners'? What if you were unfortunate enough to be born before 1611? And wtf is so special about the KJV as opposed to say Tyndale's version? Where in the Bible does it say that the KJV is the only translation you must use? Surely Paul would have mentioned it?
Their theology has more holes than a Swiss cheese. They'd be funny if they weren't such bastards.

But British people don't really care about 'Christians' being picked on, and there are no brownie points to be earned thereby. It's also hard to imagine that Oxford offered the cheapest venues or hotels.
There must have been the appeal of being among the dreaming spires, but do they really expect to influence our nation's intellectual elite? One must admire their very American optimism, if so.
Otherwise, none of these people really deserve the oxygen of publicity.

Back in the 70s when the Episcopal Church (U.S.A.) was revising the Book of Common Prayer, some people were outraged. I don't know if they actually thought Jesus had used the 1928 BCP at the Last Supper, but someone is said to have written to the Presiding Bishop to say that "Jesus was rolling over in his grave" over the revisions. I guess that stalwart Episcopalian had missed the whole Easter story.

Accommodation at the halls of residence at Brookes?
And I was thinking of them being able to say to themselves that they had been opposed for evangelising - that doesn't require the British to care, only themselves and their own back home.

I suppose it depends on how much you're willing to pay. I didn't imagine that a group like this would have plentiful funds, but that's my ignorance showing.
Evangelism doesn't normally occur in ideal conditions, and it seems a bit silly to complain about that. But if the group's goal is only to make a big impression back home, then Oxford has served its purpose.

Maybe they're "Inspector Morse" fans, making a fan pilgrimage to Oxford? And thought this would be a fun side activity.
Never mind that Morse would have scathing comments for them. In one episode, someone made religious overtures to him, and he said, in an offhand way, "I don't think your God would be much interested in me--at least, I hope not".

Re Ruth's link to Verity Baptist sermon story:
Good grief! What a...I can't think of an appropriate insult for the pastor. But "bereft of empathy and compassion" is a start.
Bad enough that he hates gays, and confuses them with pedophiles. But he has a Latino last name. Does he care that it was Latino night at Pulse, so Latinos may have been shot? And some may have been straight? (I don't know the actual demographics of the victims, but it's evidently a place with quite a mixture of patrons.)
Idiots like this not only make Baby Jesus cry, but have a tantrum and throw things out of the manger. Maybe the pastor will get hit by a rattle.
Slight tangent: I was just watching "Nightline", which ended with saying (in an Orlando context) that Ecclesiastes says there's a time for tears and a time for laughter, and we should do good in the world.

What a polite way of describing another piece of shit. Words like "false prophet" and "anti-Christ" come to mind as well. If it wasn't for the clear call of the gospel to forgive, show compassion and love all I would suggest the he and his vile ilk should be the ones who deserve to be shot.

Yelp really went after him--including adding pics of turds to the church's listing, and calling for the church's tax exemption to be lifted.
I e-mailed the pastor, through the handy contact form on the church's site. I went with a mode of stern correction, plus a glimmer of hope. I grew up fundamentalist, so I know some of the buttons to push. Probably won't do any good, but I feel better.
(I suspect I shouldn't put the church's URL, but it's easy to find.)
