Another year, another Death Pool. The rules are pretty much the same as ever:

1. You must pick up to 13 well-known people who you think will shuffle off this mortal coil in 2015. That is, starting from 00.01 UTC (GMT, really) on January 1st 2015 and ending at 23.59 UTC on December 31st 2015, as determined by the United States Naval Observatory.

2. The definition of "well-known" is that their deaths will be reported by at least one major news outlet. Examples outlets include (but are not limited to) The Guardian, CNN, IMDB, Al Jezeera and the Church Times.

3. All selections must be real natural born people. No fictional characters, abstract entities or "corporate persons" will be accepted.

4. Points are awarded according to the following formula: 100 minus the celebrity's age at the time of death. For example, if the person you choose dies at the age of 67 you will earn 33 points. Should you pick someone who is 100 years old when they die you will receive no points; should your person be over 100 you will lose a point for every year after 100.

5. You earn 50 bonus points if the death occurs in such a way as to clearly prove the existence of God (for example, if some doofus dies from burns after trying to torch a church) or in such a way that a Darwin Award is granted posthumously.

6. You cannot choose anyone under the age of 18.

7. You can choose an inmate scheduled to be executed but you only earn points if the person dies by some means other than the state-sponsored execution. For example, a shiv in the stomach counts; lethal injection does not.

8. You are disqualified if you contribute in any way to the death of one of your chosen candidates. Exceptions will be made if you are a police officer or member of the armed services and kill someone in the line of duty.

9. All entries must be submitted on this thread no later than 23.59 UTC on December 31st 2014. No entries will be accepted after this time. You may make changes to your list up until this time but only if someone pops their clogs before the beginning of the year or if you've put someone in twice. Surprisingly this does sometimes happen.

There are also some bonus awards:
Inside Track with the Grim Reaper Award: given for picking the first death of 2015.
Quantity Not Quality Award: given for picking the most people who croak in 2015, regardless of their points value.
Sudden Death: given for picking the last death of 2015.
A new one for this year is the Why Does it Always Happen to Me Award. This will be given to the person who changes the most 2014 picks who then die in 2015. To qualify for this award you must have entered lists for both years.

Because this has been running for a number of years we've learned that the same questions and complaints get lodged each time so here's the disclaimer: this is only a game. The Ship, its management and their associated lackeys do not necessarily endorse the death any human being. One should not necessarily view this as a "wish list"; reviewing past years will show that truly evil and nasty dictators seem to have a habit of lingering while those figures we truly respect and admire often don't. The Circus is a place for games, not discussion of the rights or wrongs of those games; if you want to discuss the ethics of this one there are other places you can do that.

I will keep records through the year and will occasionally post scores and other interesting facts.

Good luck to you all and bad luck to your nominees!

I couldn't see anything there about those with known illnesses. For example, I can think of one or two who have terminal conditions. Therefore, they seem more likely than the average person to go pining for the fjords. Does this not confer an unfair advantage?

Posted by Schroedinger's cat (# 64) on :

The thing about those with terminal illnesses is that they may well go this year, but might hold out until the following. So include them, if you are certain that they will die in 2015.

Of course, giving one of your picks a terminal disease would be disallowed under rule 8. Not to mention the laws of most countries.

One year I made my selection after Googling cancer sufferers. It proved not to be a particularly successful strategy. It seems to me that medical advances make a quick death less likely for all sorts of illnesses. Selecting older candidates might be more likely to gain you success but the points tally will not set any records.

This is my first time to play, so I decided to stack my list with older people who are more likely to ring down the curtain. I added a couple younger entertainers because the drug OD threat is always there, along with the odd fluke of luck. I highly doubt I'll win against you experienced death pickers, but it will be fun seeing if anyone I chose actually kicks it.

I think I last played this in 2011, when one of my Regular "survivors", Peter Falk, actually got me some points. I'd like to say that it's out of respect for him that I haven't played since. More like I forget to organise myself before the end of the year

So here's my new list of Survivors, with Robert Downey Jr (he seemed such a sure bet 8 years ago) getting back in, using Columbo's place. Seems like none of my other regulars* - have died in the interim, so I haven't "lost out" by not playing all these years [Biased]

Buzz Aldrin
Ursula Andress
Bernie Ecclestone
Robert Downey Jr.
Lou Ferrigno
Aretha Franklin
Elliott Gould
Shane McGowan
Gary Numan
Delia Smith
Adam West
Roy Wood
Stanley Baxter

*ETA - I've been playing since 2008, so how's that for an experienced "death picker" ?

Mine are all still alive and I’m too lazy to think of anyone else. They can ride, with a couple of sick-looking adjustments. They’re mostly rather despotic and not very nice people.

Before I submit a list, may I ask a question?

If we see someone commonly mentioned, is it okay if we ask why? Sometimes it's kind of obvious, like somebody who's old, sick or a drug addict. But what if you really don't know, like certain musicians or actors? Then again, I might just be "behind" on my celebrity gossip!

It would just be out of curiosity, nothing else.

2. Hosni Mubarak
3. George H.W. Bush

8. Abp. Desmond Tutu
9. Malcolm Young
10. Bashar al-Assad

Largely the same as last year, but Robert Mugabe better watch out, 'cause I've dropped him for being too durable, and also for not being worth enough points. That's done in several people over the past few years...

It would just be out of curiosity, nothing else.

Please feel free to ask about anyone at all although I suspect most of us have more randomness than certainty in our picks.

However, there is only thirty five minutes to post your own list so I would get a move on if I were you.

Possibly I should have said there are only thirty five minutes but now time is up anyway.

Thank you to everyone who has put a list up. I will look through them all in the next day or so and see what interesting statistics can be extracted.

Let the excited perusal of the 2015 obituary columns begin!

This year there are forty four entrants. One person only put forward twelve candidates for re-location to other realms so we have got 571 nominations in total. We were most generous to Prince Philip who attracted the attention of sixteen of us. Next most popular was George HW Bush with fourteen votes and then twelve each to Pope Benedict, Queen Elizabeth and Robert Mugabe.

Our oldest nominee was Zsa Zsa Gabor who would yield three points to one person if she died today. At the other end of the age range is Justin Bieber who would be worth eighty points to nine people. However, Jihadi John might claim either of these extremes if he/she is ever identified.

The scores at the moment are:

Leading the death pickers is Gwai with 75 points. Then comes Cottontail with 58 and Dal Segno with 50. These three each have 2 from their list who will not feature in 2016 and they jointly lead the "Quality not Quantity" leaderboard.

The first anticipated death of the year was Leon Brittan who netted North East Quine the "Inside Track with the Grim Reaper" award.

The most recent death was Robert Schuller (as noted above) and if nobody else were to die this year Lyda*Rose would win the "Sudden Death" award.

Three people have scored on the "Why Does it Always Happen To Me" leaderboard. balaam and piglet for Terry Pratchett and Og: Thread Killer for Edward Brooke.

Apart from the two mentioned above this years celebrities who will not see the 2016 new year firework shows are Abdullah al Saud, Leonard Nimmoy, Sam Simon, Terry Pratchett and Malcolm Fraser. There are reports that Mullah Fazlullah has been killed but these are not yet confirmed so I am awaiting further news, as is la vie en rouge.

Premier of Québec during the almost-successful sovereignty referendum in 1995, he will be forever remembered, against his will, in Canada as famously blaming his defeat on bankers and the ethnic vote. Actually, it was "money and the ethnic vote", and while I have heard the first part interpreted as anti-semitic, I think it's just as plausible that he meant the corporate money that had been poured into things like the Unity Rally.

I know all respectable, tolerant Just Society fans are supposed to be appalled at what Parizeau said, and I was too. That said, as an Albertan, I've lost track of the number of times I've heard someone in polite company say "The reason Alberta is such a right-wing backwater is because of all the American farmers who moved there in the early 20th Century", without provoking anything but murmurs of assent.

Well, whatever else may be said about the regime Aziz served, it did, if largely by default, keep the country's Christian population relatively well protected.

Cilla Black and Paul O'Grady filmed a pilot show for a Marks and Gran sitcom about 18 months ago. It looked promising and I assumed it was Paul O'Grady's health held it back, but maybe it was both of them.

They got bored of the official warm up guy's efforts* part way through the filming and took over, which was hilarious, as they started telling stories of their friendship, things they've done on holiday together. They both came over as incredibly warm and wanting to give people a good time.

* Live recordings of TV shows employ a comic to warm up the audience and keep them "entertained" while the set is reset. From experience these are second string comics and don't change their material that often, if at all. I've seen the artists get as fed up of the same old same old jokes and cynicism a few times and start chatting to the audience themselves. Or cover when the guy for hire hasn't turned up, which is a whole lot better.

I wall always remember him as Arthur Daley (or Flash Harry, a pre-cursor I guess). I know he did so many other things since that time, but he made that role his own, made the character type - loveable wheeling-dealing rogue - his own style.

The fact that Arthur Daley has become a watchword for a dodgy dealer. Rather than, say, Lovejoy (who was not dissimilar, and early).

I can't imagine any character played by George Cole being nasty: that's why he employed "Minder". OTOH, Ian McShane (who played Lovejoy) does look potentially evil (so will never go short of work) and never needed a minder.

Since I last summarised the state of play in April we have lost another 6 celebrities on our lists giving a total for the year of 13. The average age at death of these daisy pusher-uppers is a little over 80.

Leading our main competition is Cottontail with 90 points, followed by Gwai (75) and Dal Segno (50). In total 19 people have scored any points so 25 need to work on their predictive skills for next year. Although there are still five months left this year for any late rallies.

The quantity, not quality award is currently shared between Cottontail and Sipech with three each.

As things stand the most recent death was Val Doonican which would mean that Japes and Auntie Doris would share the Sudden Death award if nobody else on our lists were to die.

David Cameron paid tribute to him in that article. I wish he and Osborne listened to him a bit more, for despite being a Thatcherite Tory he had ten times the empathy they show, possibly a consequence of attending Winchester (a genuine centre of excellence, if an expensive one) rather than Eton (where they teach beagling and some truly stupid games).

Interesting that he was only six years older than the guy who played the son-in-law(Cheri Blair's father). Whereas on All In The Family, the American knockoff, the difference between the actors playing those characters(the SIL being being the film director Rob Reiner) was 23 years.

In the four months since my last report just three of our celebrities have died. Max Keeping (as noted above), Denis Healey and Mohammed Emwazi. Good points to An die Freude for the last of these. Can we try to keep me a bit busier in next year's game which has now been opened, please?

Top of the leaderboard is Cottontail with 90 points. Then Gwai & An die Freude with 75 & 73 respectively.

Cottontail also leads the Quantity, not Quality standings with Sipech. They have three each, one ahead of Gwai, Dal Segno, Japes and Stejjie. 22 of the 44 Shipmate entrants this year have yet to score.

If nobody else dies this year (and our current form suggests this is a distinct possibility) the Sudden Death award will go to An die Freude for Mohammed Emwazi.

The new Why Does it Always Happen to Me award is currently going balaam's way who took Terry Pratchett and BB King off this year's list. I'm sure they would like to thank you.

The average age at death of the 16 celebrities whose deaths have been successfully predicted this year is 77.5 years.

At last I have the results. Fanfare, please.

The winner of the Inside Track with the Grim Reaper award (first death of the year) is North East Quine, ably assisted by Leon Brittan.

The Sudden Death Award (last death) is shared between Schroedinger's Cat and Spike for Lemmy.

Quantity not Quality is also shared. For predicting three deaths Cottontail (Leonard Nimoy, Sam Simon & Chris Woodhead) and Sipech (Leonard Nimoy, Richie Benaud & Christopher Lee) need mantlepiece space for six months each.

Why Does It Always Happen To Me's inaugural winner is balaam who changed his mind on Terry Pratchett & BB King.

And the main competition was won by Cottontail whose three successes netted 90 points. Gwai was second with 75 points from two and An die Freude third with 73 points from one.

Well done, everyone, and thank you for playing.
