Isn't a "mic drop" basically a flounce executed with dignity?

AIUI, it's a way of saying you did such a good job that everyone else might as well pack up and go home--so the mic is no longer needed. Even Obama did it, recently. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

"Obama out" (tosses mike) was a cool finish to that very funny address. But I'm sure it was a send up. Tossing mikes is normal rudeness in WWE where public insults are part of the stock in trade conflict performances. But in more serious situations I guess it is a flounce. We've seen politicians flounce in UK media interviews by removing the lapel mike. Tossing a larger one is more dramatic, makes a satisfying thud!

A mic drop needn't include a literal drop, a microphone or even a self-indication of the event. It has moved more to indicate a decisive finish. IMO, actually dropping the mic can potentially lessen the statement.

Funny, I just posted a meme going around my tech friend's pages saying the only people who would drop a mic never had to repair one.
How does that translate, metaphorically?

Reaching waaaay back (to the King), and moving the original meaning, I guess the mike drop meaning today is .....
"Baby, I don't care!"

It was also his way of ending his eighth and final Press Corps dinner. He is literally "out" before the next one.

I loved it! Totally inappropriate contextually ( in terms of white house addresses) so absolutely fabulous. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif) [ 22. May 2016, 12:13: Message edited by: Evensong ]

I don't think this can be said for a forum like this one. The reasons for an apparent exit can be many and varied: the questions has been answered, responses have given the original author of the OP a lot to think about, someone else has already carried on the line of thought and there is little point in repeating it, etc, etc, etc

A mic drop is, when not being Elvis, you've left the building, i.e., nothing else is worth saying or hearing.
Before I met this forum, flounce meant a strip of decoration, say at the bottom of a curtain, a dress or granola-eating treehugging hippy-jeans. Dressing them up, but not swish.
