No - this isn't the Circus game; this is an invitation to you to post any four words that you personally associate with silence. It's fine if you want to repeat any of other people's words. This is a bit of an experiment to see how people perceive silence, good, bad, or just plain descriptive. Any noun or adjective you like (no obscenities please).
If you find four words limiting, stick in a few more. Four is just a suggested guideline; it's what works for you. If you want to post a second lot of words later, please do. If anyone wants to ask anyone else questions about the words they've chosen, that's absolutely fine, happy to discuss them on this thread.
I'll post four words to start off:
stillness death listening space

peace emptiness calm thrum
They might seem contrary to one another and to some extent they are. But maybe they are more complementary. The thrum might be distinctly out of place, but I hark back to time spent at my grandmother's in rural Wales, miles away from anywhere else. It was the quietest place I knew and yet in that silence you could stil pick up the faintest sound, quite possibly the blood in my ears.

still day dog afternoon light
The explanation for the last three lies in the fact that the only time I get silence is when I'm home during the day, the rest of the family is out, and the dog is snoozing.

The first three I suspect do not need explanation. The third is simply that is one of the few times you cannot hear traffic from my flat.

suffocating distracting lonely isolation
It's true, I have a hard time with silence. I've gotten a little better after having done meditation in group therapy. But it does help if I have some kind of sound or noise. Although it's been decades since I lived in the country, so I'm a little better with quiet (i.e., it doesn't feel so isolating).

Thanks for these churchgeek.
You say you have a hard time with silence. As one who seems to be naturally comfortable with silence and finds it liberating, I am very aware that I struggle to see why it is difficult for others.
Your words help me to understand a little, and hopefully empathise a little better.
