This is the thread for the giving of thanks not just to God but to those people and organizations [and even pets] that have influenced our lives for good whether momentarily or over the longer term.

All that we have comes from God, may we all be faithful in giving thanks.

Grateful for the safety of D.

Yesterday at work he pointed out a potential safety problem with a piece of equipment behind his back when he is sitting at his desk. Later that morning the machine sent a large object flying that demolished his (metal) desk and chair: fortunately he had moved, or he would have been decapitated and crushed.

Wow, this is--wow. One of my nieces-- Neph's oldest half sister-- is going to Bible college-- and given her character, I assume it is preparation to enter some kind of ministry.

She is the mother of E., who I have mentioned-- the nephew who turned a gun on himself several years ago. Neez has expressed a desire to help families surviving suicide in the past-- I am so happy that she is going for it!

Mr Ll and I are having the Worst Year Ever and yet: the prayers from our church community feel almost tangible around us; both our children were given time off work while Mr Ll was in hospital and the children-in-law came on the worst days to look after us all; we had multiple offers to drive us across country on Christmas Eve to get his test results; a couple had changed the date of their new year visit which meant they were with us when I heard my mother had been rushed into hospital - one drove me to see her while the other looked after Mr Ll; shipmates have given me a breathing space. Let me not forget these blessings.

A month or so ago I had a sharp pain in a tooth from time to time when I ate. It caused me some anxiety. My dentist didn't want to treat it as it wasn't giving me constant pain. Since a painful (but tasty) meal out over a week ago I've had no pain. Hoping I don't speak too soon, but am very grateful for the reprieve.

Yippee for Miss M, Lothlorien. [Yipee] [Yipee]

I'm still giggling at the small, but significant event at work today - two of my hardest working students indulging in a few minutes of sheer silliness and total enjoyment of life. It was just so lovely to watch and to be a part of. They'll go far, those two.

I'm also celebrating that the two of them (in motorised wheelchairs) chasing me down the campus was possible for me - there's no way this time last year I could've done that without getting seriously out of breath, red of face and very sweaty. This year, I didn't.

We buried my brother yesterday in a short but dignified ceremony at a woodland burial site. Some of his favoured music, an address composed by his widow, which was 100% accurate, a little sunshine and the site wasn't muddy. A fair few people there said they would like to buried in a similar location.

His grandson who is three in September has been keeping them all going and no-one thought he was entirely aware of everything going on, but as the casket was put into the ground he said "Bye, Poppa" [Tear]

I'm grateful that the certificates I had lost (see prayer thread earlier this afternoon) have now turned up - that is a huge weight off my mind, and I have a slightly tidier room as a result too!

I'm kind of ambivalent about putting this here, as I don't subscribe for a second to the 'God give me a parking space' school of prayer (which this basically was). But I think posting it on the prayer thread gave me a sense of ease that someone else might have my back (even if it was completely meaningless), and let me calm down enough to think of where to look. So I'm thankful for that [Smile]

I have been moaning to anyone who would listen, and some who would not [Biased] about my internet and phone service and the numerous times I have been cut off this year. It happened again today so I rang the provider and said I didn't see why I should be billed for the time I didn't have access - so they cut $60 off my $105 bill. In addition this time it was fixed on the same day [Eek!] (I suspect the blokes laying new wastewater pipes cut a cable).

My brother-in-law Peter, who came off his bike a month ago, was moved into rehab yesterday. Initially we thought he would not survive, and he's still very fragile, but he's done amazingly. It will be one hell of a long process, as the doctors still haven't done anything about his smashed up shoulder and spine (because of the likelihood of a stroke under anaesthetic), but he is smiling at his wife, trying to crack jokes in German, able to respond to the medical staff in English.

I'd appreciate prayers for/on this coming Tuesday afternoon please: I have an appointment at 2.45pm to see a G I specialist to arrange a colonoscopy. This is a routine job, as I have these every five years after bowel cancer.

I have a slight concern that is not routine though: to discuss a discharge that has developed over the last few months. This could be 'anything' or 'nothing' - the dr may well be able to tell on Tuesday if it is 'something', but possibly not until the actual test (date as yet unknown).

I'm not fond of the idea of surgery (!), so please will you join me in praying that it proves to be 'nothing'! Thank you.

So grateful that Mr S was well enough to attend The Former Miss S's graduation ceremony at Shrivenham yesterday. As she never got a first degree, to get a Master's (with merit) from King's College, London, was a moment any parent would be proud of [Overused]

Also, Baby Grumpkin (she was pregnant for the last three months of the course [Eek!] ) behaved impeccably and especially during the National Anthem *phew*

Fantastic prayer concert last night in Winchester Cathedral [Angel] - about 2,000 people inside and another 1,000 outside on the green! Bishop David (Basingstoke), Bishop Tim (Winchester) very briefly, Archbishop Justin (Canterbury) by videolink - as my friend Suzi's aunt would say, I have been Truly Blessed! [Overused]

Oh, and did I mention Matt Redman and the band?

I am a grumpy person and spend a lot of time currently telling God how rubbish I think everything is. However, I am exceedingly grateful for M and D, both of whom can see how difficult I'm finding life at present and who are being utterly lovely despite the fact I'm probably an immense pain at times. Also, I have managed not to fuck up at work over the past couple of months and am probably over the worst in terms of risk of fucking up at work. This is very good, because my work is important to me and I would be much much grumpier (to the point of spontaneous combustion due to grumpiness and negativity overload) if work were going badly wrong as well.

My 15 year old granddaughter was hit by a car on the way to school this morning. She rolled up bonnet and smashed windscreen, but she is unharmed. x-rays show no breaks and there appears to be no other damage. How amazing is that! I am very thankful

Praise for my family relationships getting better.

Praise that even though I am on a plateau...my body is getting smaller, my blood pressure is dropping and I am feeling better from all the walking with the Gent. I will walk inside a mall for 6 hours today if we accomplish that (it's rather hot to go outside).

I've reached the age of routine mammogram screening. I had one in 2002 and it was a wretched experience. Turns out the technology has advanced a lot in the last 14 years, and it's quicker, too! I trudged in and skipped out!

We all made it safely to the funeral obsequies of the beloved Auntie Ruth (including Master S, who flew Toulouse-Paris-London, then caught a train to Taunton to be there).

Her little church (where Mr S and I were married 41 years ago, was crammed to the rafters; and the Dowager was there in her wheelchair.

Afterwards at the Village Hall she sat in state receiving visitors - my brother reckoned she was like a Mafia Don, or the Pope!

And when we finally took her back to the little cottage hospital where she is currently a resident, they welcomed her as if she were the Prodigal Daughter - the NHS has its faults but that place is definitely not one of them [Angel]

Thank you everyone for your prayers [Overused]

And again! W, named for her great-grandmother, was born this morning. She is the first girl after a run of four boys on my side of the family.

F & W's grandmother, recently widowed, will at least have her hands full as both were born by C-section, so the mums can't drive for six weeks.

After a bit of a scare with the computer this morning not letting me access my files, all is well again. (And hastily backed up!)

The First Weekend of the month is my busiest print out what with hymn lists, Evensong (I know, we could use the tiny BCPs, but the singing has improved out of all recognition since I started printing out what we needed in a size everyone could read easily!) and any additional stuff I need as organist for the month... I am deeply grateful it was nothing more drastic than a lost couple of hours work.

The conceit that humans have that they are dominant when there about 400,000 species of beetle shows where God's priorities really lie.

Some years ago I was due to conduct a wedding. Much to everyone's discomfiture, the bridal car arrived 10 or 15 minutes too early. I told the driver to "take a turn around the block", which he did.

Unfortunately I hadn't reckoned on it being a Football fay. The car got stuck in the match traffic and took a good half-hour to return!

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to report that I have at last had the results of the MRI scan from the Funny Turn I had at the end of May.

I was hoping that it was *only* migraine, but apparently it was the tiniest of mini-strokes*. That may not seem like much cause for rejoicing, but viewed as a warning it must be seen as a real blessing [Overused] as the tablets they immediately put me on have lowered my blood pressure and dropped my cholesterol to a level described as 'fabulous'.

So thank you Lord for the warning, and thanks also to our much-maligned NHS for their prompt and effective treatment [Overused]

Relief and rejoicing in the North East household.

Relief - On Tuesday my father had a scan which showed that what might have been a tumour, wasn't.

Rejoicing - Today the North East Loon heard that he will graduate with a Desmond (2:2) in November. (He should have graduated in June, but he failed a module and had to resubmit.) Whilst at Uni he has saved up enough (!) to be self-supporting for a year (cheap flat, Tesco value food) and intends to live the life of a starving writer in a garret. It's going to be interesting!

Yes, he is. He has had two children's books published, so he does know what's involved. He also gets paid to visit schools, through a scheme run by the Scottish Book Trust. It's not much, but it's something.

Sometimes the sunshine helps feel that way, or a really good sleep.

I have a practice of finding three things for which I am grateful every morning at breakfast. I cover all sorts of topics in this.

High time to give thanks for some of my requests here from the last few weeks: [Hot and Hormonal]

As I posted, I got accepted on a further training course relevant to my profession and my job. Also, one of my (not so rich) cousins's sponsored the course fee for now, which will be paid back by work at some point - while some other (rather wealthy) cousins weren't able to support... Camel and eye of the needle and all that. A bit of an eye opener on the burden of the reach, which seem real. - They're still lovely people, though. [Smile]

Again, your prayer for requests on here is very effective and clearly felt, and makes a huge difference to me, and I'm sure a lot of us who post and pray!

Thank you all! [Overused] [Axe murder]

That's what the course is for, and I'm learning! Should make work and life considerably easier in the end, once you get the new routines up and going!

Thanks, and thanks be to God. [Angel]

I think this may the right place to park a personal note... Yesterday my Dear Old Mother died in the nursing home in the north east of Scotland, and I am immensely thankful that she did it peacefully and in her right mind; my youngest sister with her - a good way to go. She was 95 and had been in fragile health for a long time. Some of her engagingly unverifiable anecdotes have appeared around here a few times, so now I am the hapless guardian of family folklore with little hope of ever being able to prove a single word of stories that are much too good to forget. We have to come up with an inscription for a marker for her, and so far, I favour "Born a Cockney; Died a Teuchter".

My commiserations ST: a wonderful way for your mother to end her life, full of years and in her right mind, but for those of us left behind it can make it harder. Yes, being the repository of all the family legends can make one feel ancient: we recorded my late Papa about his uncles and aunts and my sons have been entranced to listen to them, not just their grandfather's voice but all the scrapes he recounted about 4 young men all of whom served in WWI and lived to tell the tale.

Last night my wife had a long talk on the phone with her (half) brother. For the first time. Ever.

She had known about him for 60 years and worried about him being left out of the family, but only just now found a name that she could track down. He was overjoyed, too.

It has been a busy few months: last weekend she met two nephews for the first time who she hadn't known about before this summer. And the week before that she was contacted (via a DNA sample) by a great niece who had been given up for adoption, and who was looking for her birth family.

It may be possible for the rocks that have filled the pool to be removed although, understandably this is not a priority.

Thanks Gee D!

They reckon my tumour started about 20-25 years ago, given its size (55mm x 45mm approx.). I'm 65 now, so I don't think I need to worry too much..

A lady I know (now in her late 40s) has had a brain tumour since she was in her 20s, but it's a case of 'watch and wait'. It does affect her, when she's tired and/or stressed, but not to such an extent that removal is the only option.

Praise the Lord for developing techniques and increasing knowledge in so many medical spheres!

As for myself, I'd like to give thanks for the dental surgery of last Thursday.

As I could talk to the dentist before about my worries and fears, and he was listening and taking me seriously, this was much less traumatic than I'd thought. (I had been a few times before, but for smaller scale things.) Indeed, you could nearly say I enjoyed it...! [Paranoid]

It is a huge difference if you have a dentist who is not only good at his job, but who takes you as his patient seriously.

Nearly no pain now, after surgery (!), compared to sometimes quite unbearable pain before. Hm... I reckon I could have gone earlier! [Roll Eyes]

So, thank you very much for your prayers, of which I have been and am very aware. Another exercise in trust, and which went well.

Thanks be to God. [Axe murder]

I need to visit this thread more often. It's so uplifting to read! Thanks be to God for all the wonderful things everyone's reporting here.

As an update, I've been at my new job a week, and it's fabulous. It's a church job - Parish Administrator - and I really love the people I'm working with. It seems like just the environment I need to be in. I know it will get stressful sometimes and won't always be roses, but I'm really grateful.

God be praised that Bana Alabed, the 7-year old girl tweeting from Aleppo, has been safely evacuated with her family.

Thank you LORD....that what could have been a dismal funeral drinks in the pub.....turned into.....a blooming' great ole mass recollection-fest. Loads of people. Loads of seriously brilliant people + a young baby as well. What more could anyone want. [Yipee]

Thanks that what looked like a disaster early on has turned out to be, by and large, a nice day, and quite positive by the end.

Praise and thanks for a successful family Christmas, featuring The Dowager, who behaved (mostly) impeccably, didn't fall over, and didn't end up in A&E over the festivities (if that sounds a bit of a let-down, believe me, I'll settle for that!) [Killing me]

Thanks also for The Intrepid Grandson's first birthday - only slightly marred by him cutting pre-molars(!). He's walking about very confidently (crawling is for babies now) and is as happy and contented a child as one could ask for [Axe murder]

Mrs. S, pretty happy altogether [Yipee]
