Sad to hear of his passing. Before he became a professor or a bishop, he was chaplain of the Queen's College, Oxford, and my tutor for doctrine. He seemed at the time to have the best brain I had ever met, talking faster than most of us could think: keeping up with him was a breathless and exhilarating exercise. He was also very kind and supportive.

My favourite memory is of him standing at the entrance to the university church after the first of his Bampton Lectures (later published as The Glory of Man) holding a small child in each hand while receiving congratulations from learned colleagues.

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

An inspirational man, and though I never heard him his writings alone inspired and nurtured my faith.

RIP

I met hIM when his dementia was starting - he was still inspirational.

I heard him speak many years ago, when the ordination of women as priests was still being debated. The talk was wonderful - about taking the difficult option and living by faith - but one aside sticks in my mind. He confessed that in Synod he had to restrain himself from saying: "Yes, we know that John Selwyn Gummer will cross to Rome if this motion goes through. However, there are other good reasons for supporting it."
