Farewell to a great, great man. Cuba was fortunate to have him over the last 55 years.

May his life and doings be healed. May he find light and peace. May Raul, his brother, lead Cuba wisely, and may Cuba make the best possible transition.

(BTW: if you want to see some good interviews with Fidel, look up the ones that Barbara Walters did back in the '70s (?). ABC's "Nightline" reran clips last night, and interviewed Barbara about him.)

He was certainly an inspirational, if controversial, figure. A friend met him once when he was over in Cuba giving an address on some abstruse mathematical subject and Castro made time in his schedule to see this visiting Indo-British academic - George says he was a completely fascinating guy to talk to even if only for the 30 minutes he managed to wangle - it was supposed to be 10 minutes but apparently Castro could talk!

Not sure I can say much about Fidel - or indeed Raul - but we met their older brother Ramón. We were visiting some touristy junket or other and he turned up "on duty" showing some overseas guests the joys of Cuba. He was - and I can't emphasise this enough - utterly, utterly charming, abandoning his official guests to speak with us, posing for photographs and talking to the locals. He died, IIRC, earlier this year.

Callan, yes indeed. I assume that those out dancing on Thatcher's death are again rejoicing - he was a cruel and vicious tyrant, and killed many for not real reason. You don't have to be a supporter of Battista to say that.

Private messages don't do any good; but I started this thread in AS for a reason. Take your negative posts elsewhere.

I would remind posters that this is an In Memoriam thread in All Saints. While there is undoubtedly both good and bad in all of us, this is not the place for such discussion and belongs perhaps in Purgatory with an opening thread making the discussion clear.

Thank you.

Lothlorien. (All Saints Host)

Edited to add: Purgatory thread Here

I never met the man nor his brother, but if he can find a 1954 Lincoln convertible in his collection, I'd like to bid on it!

Always the gearhead, me, I still wished I had a vintage roadster!

R I P Fidel - I hope you are in a better place and at peace!
