Some of you have already said prayers for Erin, included her in special intentions at a mass, or posted cyber-votives.

Erin was not one to hide her light under a bushel. And as I lit a candle for her today in Goulburn Cathedral in country New South Wales in Australia, it made me wonder how many other candles might be being lit in her memory around the world because this global community knew and appreciated her. She probably would have told us all to not be so stupidly mawkish, and then grudgingly put up with all the sentimentality.

However, I don't see this as sentimental, I see it as a very real symbol of light claiming its own.

So, if you have lit a candle for her at a church, or in your home, here's the place to acknowledge it. You can include any prayer that you might have prayed if you like, but really, all that is needed is the votive smilie and town or district of lighting. Like this:

One candle [Votive] (an altar candle stub - a Lenten unbleached one so it smells of honey) lit, placed in my window (I don't know why - perhaps she'll see it?) next to my icon of Madonna and Christ Child (Erin once, IIRC, deigned to post in MW/Eccles about the addition of the Glorious Mysteries to the RC Rosary and said how much she loved the rosary).

I lit one in my living room today. I have a stomach bug, so I could not go to the church to pray like I wanted to. But I will mention her name during the litany on Sunday.

The prayer I prayed today was the "Litany at the Time of Death" from the BCP (pp. 462-464), with "A Commendatory Prayer" before the Lord's Prayer.

I couldn't find anything better to pray.

This is why I like having a prayer book. At times when you just have no words, the words are there to be had. Sometimes they are not the best, but they are better than most. And sometimes they are perfect.

We had over a hundred candles lit tonight at "St. Spike's" in Berkeley, although I didn't do any of them. During our Epiphany service, I had a vision of Erin in ecstasy rising to Heaven seated on a large version of a Christmas pageant-type star; oh star of wonder!

I'll be lighting candles and reading The Burial of the Dead in the prayer book tomorrow morning, whether at home or in the chapel (because I have a key and I can).

Wonderful thread, wonderful thread title.

I have been away from home taking care of my elderly father for several days. When I left the hospital last night, I would have given anything to find an Episcopal Church, preferably one with a nice Epiphany service going on, but to no avail. Lovely big Methodist and Baptist churches along the way, but no votive-friendly places. Today I checked the hospital chapel, a nice little RC place but no votives available, probably for safety reasons. So I had a "WTFWED?" moment.

It took a couple of attempts to find the chapel empty, but I lit one of the altar candles and said a prayer for the repose of Erin's soul and of thanksgiving for her life. And then I blew it out, because I figured that with all those years working in health care, Erin would be royally pissed at me if I burned down a hospital.

I did this at 11:45 a.m. today, EST, which I have just discovered coincided with Erin's funeral. So please add to the list the chapel at St Joseph's Hospital, Atlanta GA.

Not sure if this counts, and I did not light it, but the sunset the night of the funeral was astounding. The clouds were a beautiful shape, layered and textured. The colours were gold, with reds and oranges, deep and bright. Seemed to last forever, getting richer as it went on. Even as the clouds began to fade, a warm glow shown on the water a while longer.

Thanks for the mapping ecu & jengie; lovely work - gives me a warm glow every time I look at it and think of the caring thoughts and prayers surrounding the gator pic. Nice to remember also that the gator is now surrounding us with her prayers.

Jengie - thank you for the map.

There was no chance of forgetting my promise to pray on Sunday - the last hymn was Guide me, O thou Great Redeemer. A struggle, following the Cafe service, and yet when put together with references to life in Christ from the rest of the RL service, a good way in to praying for Erin's family and you all.

My church doesn't do candles but I was praying for Erin and her family at St Mary Magdalene, Ashton-on-Mersey in Greater Manchester (aka St Valentine-on-the-Barmcake) and have lit a virtual candle on the site.

Not late at all Hedgehog. In my experience the second and third weeks after a loss can be the most difficult for immediate family. I'm sure Erin appreciates the continued thoughts and prayer very much, especially for all she loved.

If people give a link to the picture of the candle as Simon did, I can include that in the Swamp Lights Map.

I'm posting this not because it needs to be on the map, but just to let people know:

When I lit a candle for Erin at my Tiny Town church, I also lit one for her father, with a prayer that he (and the rest of the family) would find peace. His message on the friends and family thread just communicated such grief that I felt the need to ask for God's help for him. I really can't imagine how he is coping with such a loss.

Not too late, I will be proud of the ship if I am still posting lights in a years time, Erin's family and such will still need prayer then whatever people's theology.
