Sven is in fact getting restless -- and he's shown absolutely no interest in my Wednesday night soiree celebrating the new Star Trek series.

I've got JB's address, but can post Sven to Islandexile in Hawaii just as easily -- let me know which it should be, and if Sven's going to Hawaii I'll need the address.

Oooh, and since Carmel's decided to take the risk and invite Sven, we could have a handover in person, too! Yes, I *know* it's ages away yet, but I'm getting excited.

About meeting me or about meeting Sven?

I've got a couple of ideas about places he can visit ... and the Calvados is sitting right on top of a shelf I'm sure he can't reach without my help.

Don't underestimate Sven. He's really far quite wiley. Keep the Calvados under lock and key is my advice.

And Wood worries that we'll corrupt Sven! Pah!

Sven has been guzzling my Bombay Sapphire while I'm at work. It's the only possible explanation for why there is so little in the bottle -- the cats are teetotalers.

He quite liked the Queen Mary, but is now turning up his nose at California beaches since he's gotten wind of the plans for adding a Hawaiian leg to his trip. Just a bit more grousing about how the sand here is too coarse and I'm gonna turn the cats loose on him!

I thought that this would be a busy time, but here I am completely free yet mooseless.

And the Chimisa below 7000ft are already gone to seed.
The Aspens are past their peak.
The Cottonwoods have just begun to turn yellow.

They will all be gone before the Moose Toss, so here are the mooseless pictures and you can imagine antlers in appropriate places.
__________________________________________
Aspens up around 11000ft peaked about last week, as you can see from the leaves
Aspen Leaves

But they still manage to show up when the sun shines on them:
Aspens in the Sangre de Christo Mountains

Chamisa flowers made yellow dye and the roots made a tea good for coughs and congestion. The tiny flowers were also dried, mixed with tobacco and smoked.

Nambe River (well sometimes-river) hosts cottonwoods just starting to turn yellow.

Did you imagine the antlers in each picture?
If so, where?

When he shows up we will find someplace else to go, completely different. (If he agrees, of course.)

Lovely pictures, JB! Thanks!

I saw the antlers down in the corners of the pictures, as if Sven were standing a little in front of you to the right while you were shooting...

Perhaps Sven will get to see some snow when he visits you, which should make him feel right at home after visiting the tropical climes.

Thank you so much for those pictures, JB. Autumn is my favorite time of year--but also the most poignant. It is the time of year I most miss living back in Pittsburgh. Although we get a bit of fall color here in the Bay Area, it's nothing like the northeast.
I did get to see some nice color this past weekend. Driving north to go camping near Mendocino, we drove through the higher elevations of the western wine country, and the vines were coloring nicely, as were the cottonwoods and alders in the coast range. Picked up a lug of gravensteins and 2 gallons of fresh cider as well on the way back.

Sven is going to Hawaii via Priority Mail. Tomorrow I will take my film to be developed. The good people at Costco will be amazed no doubt to see an entire roll of film devoted to a moose, when what they usually get from me is entire rolls of film devoted to my cats.

A mooseless tomb walked to work this morning wondering if Sven would make it to Colorado before the snow flies.

In the spirit of JB's posts, he took some pictures so that people could see what Sven was missing.

This is tomb's office. Notice the computer and imagine little antlers in front of it. tomb has been desperately trying to find a filter that will block ungulate cyberporn, but so far with no luck. tomb will therefore be vigilant.

This is the stream tomb crosses on his way to work. About this time of year, elk have been known to come down from the highcountry along this particular drainage.

tomb will do his best to guard Sven from bugling elk, who do not take kindly to invaders in their territory--particularly viking ones.

Down the street from tomb's house, and not far from the celebrated microbrewery. tomb suspects Sven will become familiar with the route.

If he ever gets here!

To JB and Siegfried,

The pictures are quite nice, JB, but it doesn't do any justice to what the scenery in Pennsylvania is doing right now! The leaves are hues of colors that only God could devise. It makes you know that HE is God and the magnificence of HIS work is enormous.
Praise be the Lord.

Sorry, you are missing this, Siegfried. We had a bit of a drought this summer, and it is making the foliage even better. Get on the state PA website for a better look.

He isn't the only one!

Now, using my powers of deductive reasoning the date stamp of 12 5 01 cannot mean 5th of the Dec 01, cos it hasn't yet happened (I am discarding the ideas of time travel and of an incorrect camera clock). This leads me to believe that the camera is an American one, and given the date of 12/5/01 I deduce that the picture was taken by an American shipmate before Sven visited the Motherboard.

And would the shipmate who took the photograph please got back to that church with a zoom camera and take some more photos.

I was wondering if our furry friend would fancy a trip to the Mainland? Depending on timing it might be possible to do a moose toss at the proposed Brugge (Bruges) Shipmeet in Feb. Or maybe he'd like to come a bit later and visit the bulb fields.

12 05 01 in the US would be December 5th, 2001 (we go Month/Day/Year). The pic has to be from either the UK or Australia--although, does Canada also go Day/Month/Year in dating?

I would venture to guess that the mysterious 12/5/01 is part of a conspircy-gone-wrong to hide Sven's whereabouts at the time the picture was suppose to be taken and that since it would appear from previous posts that such dating is done the same on post sides of the Atlantic that the date clearly eigher has no significance or is in some way a secret coded message.

(I do love long rambling sentences that don't neccissarily make more sense when you reread them.)

babybear, maybe I misunderstood you about the date. 12.05 is the European (and Australian?) way of saying 12th may, not the US way. But perhaps that is what you were saying too, and that due to Sven's itinerary he should have been in N.America at the time. Could it have been taken with a cheap bootleg camera bought at an airport in the far east? Someone should own up. We demand to know the answer!

The first three are mine. Chalky, Peter and I introduced Sven to the other 'inhabitants' of our house, where he had a fine time chatting up Laa Laa and swapping intellectual quips with Pinky...

The second is Sven outside the Royal Opera House - I tried to make him look as if he was sitting inside, but it didn't really work. The third is Sven trying to play an imaginary French horn - don't ask me why...

Have you got the ones of Sven at Pizza Express with the Shipmates? Where he's suffering the after-effects of his first taste of Chianti?

How come every time I get near the front of the line something happens?

I won Second Prize in the office lottery:
****two weeks in Washington****
(DC, not the pretty state)
(First Prize is one week.)

So what can we do?

Plan 1:
If Sven arrives in the Santa Cruz (NM, not CA) Post Office before 10/13, he can see Washington with me. I think I saw a thread for a Washington Shipmeet we could attend 10/20.
Pro: Shipmeet
Con: Picture Plans disappear

Plan 2:
Sven dallies on the beaches of Hawaii and arrives about 10/27.
Pro: Two items
1.Sven may enjoy that
2.Planned pictures get taken
Con: Delays rest of list

Plan 3:
Sven spends two weeks in post office box
Pro: Sven may be tired
Con: Sven spends two weeks in post office box

Plan 4:
Wood reschedules to put JB later (or never)
Pro: Keeps the Moose World Tour going
Con: May not get pictures.

His Cowboy hat awaits him.

Correction, bb, you can't have him before I get him.

I have plans for Sven. He's been getting soft all these decadent places he's been visiting. Hawaii indeed.

I think a short course in Muscular Christianity in Colorado will be just the ticket to get him back into shape.

Sven needs to re-engage with his wild side. None of this sneaking gin at RuthW's. We're gonna go trekkin'!

Sven's bad habits go back a lot father than his recent stay with RuthW in California. When I had the pleasure(?) of his company several months ago, he was still reeking from his stay with Presleyterian in the Washington, D.C. area.

Veteran followers of the peripatetic moose may recall that she left Sven unattended in her residence with an unlocked liquor cabinet for two weeks while she was on the road. Of course, I didn't know this at the time (or to be truthful, chose to ignore it) with the resultant significant reduction in my modest inventory of single malt scotch whiskey.

Perhaps all the clean living in Hawaii and the regime proposed by Tomb will dry out the moose once and for all.

Since I don't currently have any alcohol to lock up in cabinets, I threatened to lock Sven up if he started getting out of hand. Between that and the beaches he seems to be pretty dry right now. Though he may well revert once he's back around the stuff.

I can either get him underway this weekend or take him island hopping with me next week. (Has Sven ever seen a volcano?)
Either way. Just let me know by Saturday...or early Sunday morning GMT... if he ought to be sent before the middle of next week.

Apologies for the second half of that last post. I had myself a little confused about Sven's itinerary.

Tomb- I will be sending the Moose to you tomorrow (Monday) via priority mail so he should be there in a couple of days.
