For those still looking for likely entries, here is a site for Threatened Species of Tasmania.
Still lots of good choices available, including the scrubtit, forty-spotted pardalote, chaostola skipper, and the Tasmanian Devil tapeworm (which only lives in the endangered Tasmanian Devil, of course.)
Oh, and for the geographically challenged, Tasmania really is a part of Australia, not a country in Africa.

A strange 'walking' fish, the spotted handfish, found only in isolated colonies around south-eastern Tasmania. Alarmingly there have been only four confirmed sightings in the past five years, although three colonies (of 200-500 each) plus a few isolated individuals are estimated.

Dear QM et al. Having a long weekend of camping with the wife and kids. Can't post again until Wednesday my time which I think is the summer of 1953, your time.
In short, I must default on the next round. (unless it lasts over 5 days)
I am happy to take a bullet on this round to preserve someone else who could continue.
It's been fun,
Yellow Snow BTW, Temperature twentyfour degrees, a chance for some walking, possibly some waterskiing, four full days off work, bit of wine, a few beers. You know defaulting on the Quiz might almost be worth it...

ROUND EIGHT: EARTH SATELLITES
For this round I need two distinct pieces of information:
1) The name of the satellite orbitting the earth.
2) The time taken for your choice to complete one circumnavigation.
The person to be eliminated will be the one with the closest to the average time taken to complete one ring around the earth.
Now, what have I failed to clarify this time?

Having been now cross posted twice and lost a couple of choices...
The obvious odd answer having already been taken, I would go for Cruithne, except it isn't a real satellite of Earth - more of a companion with a weird orbit.
So I shall go for Lacrosse 3, which is a US government spy satellite orbiting 14.71292432 times per day, which works out at one orbit every 0.06797 days, 1.6312 hours or 1 hour, 37 minutes, 52 seconds.
Incidentally, this site has a database with lots and lots of details about satellites and when you can see them. Even lists for you to pick from...

Man, tough one methinks. Kudos to QM for thinking up difficult questions.
I'm going for Landsat 5 which is a plain old bog standard observation satellite, taking 16 days to orbit the earth. I was trying to be clever and look for an exciting thing like the second moon that we apparently have (called cruithne) but apparently it isn't a real moon of earth, and not being clever enough I wasn't sure if it did orbit the earth properly, so left it. (Although if anyone is willing to argue the toss on whether it is a real satellite or not, feel free to use it!)
I found this page rather handy... partial list of earth observation satellites
[ETA: ohhh, crossposted with custard, suddenly don't look so clever on the old cruithne thing. dammit. Oh well, as they say, great minds think alike eh custard?! ] [ 30. September 2005, 22:34: Message edited by: christianjimmy ]

Right, this is where having a geek husband comes in handy. "Go for low earth orbit", he said, "because they're very short in period, so won't be near the average".
So I choose UoSat - Oscar 11, which has a period of 99 minutes, as shown on the Amsat site. [ 30. September 2005, 22:33: Message edited by: Moth ]

I'll take a cute one: CUTE-I
A Japanese ham radio satellite that has been up over two years now. Tiny little thing - about 10cm cube and weighs around 1 kg.
You can build a paper model of it by printing out their file on a A4 sheet of paper. (It uses cut-and-paste, through, not real origami.)
Unfortunately the log and other information are in Japanese, so I haven't been able to find a orbit time yet. However, the 2-line Keppler orbit elements are:
1 27844U 03031E 05235.54459366 .00000081 00000-0 58274-4 0 5668 2 27844 098.7240 242.8205 0009458 197.0180 163.0673 14.20368241111406
which should provide all necessary orbital information.
I'll see if I can't decode some telemetry or something and come up with an orbital period...

Looks like the signals are received at the Titech Ground Station in Japan about every 1 hour 40 minutes or so, so I'll use 100 minutes for the orbital period.
The log is there on the web site under Current Status / Operation Report.
The cube satellite format was developed as a standard package that can be used by universities and other non-profit groups. There are a number of others that were scheduled for launch in September and October of this year, though a few have been delayed.

Even though I ran out of time in the last round I have to contribute chandra... it's day to day ops are conducted literally right down the street from where I live. It takes approximately 64 hours and 18 minutes to complete an orbit.

XSS-11 (eXperimental Satellite System 11) is an American military (AFRL) microsatellite that was launched by a Minotaur rocket, a modified Minuteman 2 ICBM, from Vandenberg AFB at 13:35 UT on 11 April 2005.
The 100 kg satellite is equipped with sensors to seek out and make close rendezvous with several rocket bodies and dead spacecraft that are still in orbit. It will approach each such object as closely as 2.5 km to examine and image it.
This experimental model carries no projectiles. The initial orbital parameters were period 102.1 min, apogee 875 km, perigee 839 km, and inclination 98.8°. Mission life: 12 to 18 months.

GMS-1/Himawari-1 It may throw off the orbiting calculations. Its in geosynchronous orbit.

Quick note to all concerned...
Since JJ has already used the Moon, that will knock all the averages up significantly, probably to around 1 day or maybe more if many people go for geostationary / geosynchronous orbits (as there are roughly 20 contestants and a fair few also-rans).
If you're going for a low earth orbit satallite then (under about 2 hours), you just need to be sure you don't have the one which takes the longest of all those entered by contestants.
It would take roughly 500 low-earth orbit entries to get the average down below 90 mins. So if you want to be safe, go there.

Sorry - the 500 figure was due to a quick calculation in my head and wasn't quite accurate.
If the only satellites chosen were the moon and Low Earth Observation satellites with periods averaging 90 mins, then there would need to be 4022 LEO satellites chosen before the mean dropped below 100 mins. In other words, the very risky place to be is the longest-period LEO or something with an orbital period around 1 day.

Anyone had the POES yet? quote: POES (Polar Operational Environmental Satellites) maintain an orbital height of about 500 mi and take about 100 min to complete an orbit
( from here)
Seastar is also a satellite which the US have launched to look, surprisingly, at the sea. It has an orbit of 99 mins. And as I write this it is approaching South America...

The Navstar satellite - orbit time of 12 hours. The cluster is what tells your nice satellite-navigation lady where she is.

And of course there is the oldest man made object in space, Vanguard 1. It has now been in space since 1957 and has traveeled over 10189046848 km's, completed 187092 orbits of the earth, each one at around 134 mins.
