OK then - I am back - collecting answers - I make it 11 people still to post a town or city, including myself. One of the reasons I am in the competition is so that I can choose to sacrifice myself at the appropriate time to rid the game of any troublemakers .... now who can I get closest to?
Well done to several newbies who are already ahead of the old heads. I expect round one to start sometime in the next week. I may even break the notion of waiting until this thread is on page two of the circus.

Welcome home, QM!
Quizmaster said that the quiz is for: "entertainment and also edification."
Hmmmm...entertainment...the obsolete meaning is "employment." And edification is the act of edifying? Doesn't edify mean to build a house?
Oh, I see...QM said to look it up. He wants us to know that we're employed by him to build a house (for himself?)

ROUND ONE : FRUIT & VEGETABLE
Let us start with an easy one. Everybody eats and we all know a fruit or a vegetable. You must name one that has not already been chosen at the time of posting.
Usually at this early stage someone forgets to post, as we saw with the cities, so make sure you are not one of those knocked out for not putting an entry in.
Qualifying Criterion: If everyone posts a fruit or a vegetable all those with the shortest words will be knocked out. I am confident that this will not be needed but time will tell and we shall see.

A delightful treat when found ripe in the woods - the plant has just one berry on top of each stalk, which can be up to an inch in diameter. A favorite of bears, so one must be careful when picking them. [ 06. September 2005, 22:50: Message edited by: Carex ]

Note that Latin and other non-English names have not yet been specifically excluded. However, it would be unwise to choose such a name, as there might be some doubt as to its acceptability.
Note also that there has not yet been a ruling as to whether adjectives can contribute to the letter count; it might be wise to exercise caution on this account.
Linking to a picture of the named item has a certain style to it and also reinforces its credibility, especially if there might be some queries about the adjectival part of the name.
Also, watch out for veggie friends with more than one name. As well as making sure the item is undoubtedly a vegetable or a fruit. And not for example arguably a nut or a pulse.
Note also that all you have to do to ensure you stay in the game is make sure that your fruit or vegetable name is longer than the shortest fruit or vegetable name yet produced.

How do you embed a link in your post? I have noticed some of you have links to VERY interesting websites, even if the link doesn't always sound very intriguing. I would like to know how to do this.
I only noticed this when my cursor changed to a hand when I ran it over someone's post. Then I realized that it was actually a link to a magical, faraway place dotted with points unknown.

Honestly, S'more. Posting a link is easy. I'm not going to take the time to explain it to you. After all, you are a newbie and you should learn to read the Ship FAQs if you have a question. Plus, you have all the earmarks of being a irritating little git.

This could mean that it is the shortest word in the name that counts, rather than the whole name. So "Bob the tomato", for example, would have length 3.

Well it could. But my hunch would be that this is not what our venerable Quizmaster meant.
Apologies to S'more for failing to explain immediately how to post a link and many congratulations on working it out for yourself. I am sure that you are a charming and very lovable person.
It did occur to me that while "Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera" is undoubtedly lengthy, it is too Latinate to count. So I meant to choose the "English version."
I suppose, however, that there is a sense in which "Brussels sprouts" still don't sound very English! but never mind.
Oh and I would hope that, footdoc, QM will not only a) count entries with speling mistakes but b) work out the tally for you from the correct spelling. But you could try posting your one again just to make sure!
