We don't have competitions in Purgatory. But we've been persuaded to hold this competition with a twist...
Remember this from 381 A.D. (with some controversial later edits...)?
quote:
I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. I believe one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation, He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became Man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father [and the Son]. With the Father and the Son He is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Perhaps you feel it's high time for an update? Or perhaps you feel that although this Creed holds for all time, you would quite like the challenge of expressing the core of Christianity in your own words?
What would you suggest as a new Creed for 21st century Christianity?
Submit your Creed on this thread. There's only one entry per person. You can re-submit as often as you like, but only your last post will enter the competition.
Your Creed must be 225 words or less and must be all your own work. Do not simply copy a classic Creed or you will make Baby Jesus cry (not to mention the Purgatory Hosts). Be creative.
As always the Ten Commandments apply to the competition thread and all discussions arising from it.
The deadline for submissions is midnight GMT 4th October 2006.
I'd anticipate that the new Creeds might provoke some discussion. I've opened a Credo discussion thread for this purpose.
After entries have closed, we will announce a poll in Circus for the Ship as a whole to vote on the poll to determine whose Creed captures the Holy Spirit, or at least the Zeitgeist, of our age best!
IngoB, who has suggested this competition, has also kindly offered the following new books as prizes for the winners of the popular vote:
1st (most votes): "God Matters" by Herbert McCabe 2nd: "Faith Seeking" by Denys Turner 3rd: "The Pursuit of Happiness" by Servais Pinckaers Lucky Last (least votes): "How to Read the Bible Every Day" by Carmen Rojas
In the case of a tie for any of the prizes there will be a run-off poll.
I'd like to thank IngoB for his generosity in offering the prizes, as well as for his idea for the competition.
Once again, the deadline for submissions is midnight GMT 4th October 2006.
Now go and show those 150 Fathers your own Profession of Faith!

Credo: The Vote in Council is now open for voting in the Circus. You can vote for up to five creeds. Voting closes at midnight GMT 18 October 2006.
We'll announce the results soon after that.
