AFAIK this is a true story. A long time ago a West End cinema was showing a film called "I Killed the Count" which I think was an adaptation of an Edgar Wallace novel. ATPB a man was employed to monitor the illuminated sign over the cinema to ensure that none of the letters became extinguished.
