Except that game six, if it should go that far, will be at Boston. (Didn't Rugasaw already say that? ) Then you'd have to switch your scores the other way around! (Such as inning 4, Rockies 0, Sox 1. )
[ETA ...then the 9th inning will be 0, -, as the Sox won't have to bat again! ] [ 27. October 2007, 23:12: Message edited by: jedijudy ]

People posting things like that are being totally rational. Look at how QM said he's going to work out who to eliminate: the innings scores will only be looked at if the prediction of how many games each team wins is wrong. Hence, if someone thinks that B4-2C is the most likely number of games each team will win, but thinks that the second most likely is B4-1C as opposed to B4-3C they should be posting innings scores for Game 5, not Game 6.

I don't think it's going to be very hard for QM to decide who's out! Still, I'd sooner be out of the quiz than cheer for those pesky Red Sox !
(Anyway, I seem to remember that it starts to get much harder about now, so I reckon also-ranning is the place to be.)

Also-running, surely
I have a funny feeling that ij and I might be out soon due to time pressures. Much spoiling and trouble-making to be done from the side-lines, I think

Rule bending is all part of the quiz and I have to decide whether to eliminate four late entries or one who got his entry in on time, but who unwisely opted for the Rockies.
He was lucky once before with his pre-round answer but this time he has run out of luck.
Eliminated:
Rugmaker
Qualifiers:
Ann Caty the Southerner Comet Davelarge Doublethink Flags Fiend Hart Icklejen Jedijudy Lady A Pure as Snow Rugasaw
I hope you keep going as an Also Ran Rugmaker.

Get the rule book out.
Is the line in or out? Do you have to step ON the line or OVER the line to be out? Questions like these are not the most important questions.
Why is it SO important that nobody watching or playing the game understands the rules? That is the important question.
The real reason we love competition is so that every so often we can argue about the finite details when the reality of the case is that there is a good case for arguing the situation both ways.
In actuality, it was both A TRY and NOT A TRY and that will remain the situation forever and a day. [ 29. October 2007, 20:28: Message edited by: Quizmaster ]

If you want dodgy sports decisions, you can't beat the PE teacher who put me in for the 100m hurdles, knowing my personal best at high jump was six inches lower. Three points for a refusal - I did get within a foot of the first hurdle full pelt before stopping dead in my tracks - and I didn't even bump into the hurdle!

ROUND THIRTEEN : PATDYS SIGNATURE
quote: Originally posted by Pure as the Driven Yellow Snow: Could we have a round where possible sigs are offered, four line max etc etc and vote on the best?
In a departure from convention (just for a change) Pure as The Driven Yellow Snow is to be handed a bye for this round. As punishment for the bye he will be forced to decide who must leave the competition at the end of the round.
All competitors and Also Rans should post their idea of a good signature for PATDYS. PATDYS himself should rate the entries from best to worst as he sees fit, and the worst of the competitor entries will be the person to be eliminated.
N.B. The winner may find their entry appearing in all PATDYS posts for the forseeable future.

Well, Patdys liked this quote well enough to put it on the quotes thread in Circus, so I'm hoping he still likes it (and it's a very good quote, if I may say so, Mr. Patdys, sir).
quote:
To [Chesterton], Christianity wasn't a chore and a strain - it was something that illuminated his whole being, bringing laughter and joy and hope. In an age where Christianity is more akin to constipation than laughter, we desperately need more like him. -- Cheesemeister

(I'll save the dog story for later)
I wanted to use this: quote: A vivid sense of delight takes hold of one, when for the first time one penetrates the surface. After thousands of years of fear and effort Man has at last succeeded in getting beneath the top layer of the sea, winning a long battle against asphyxia and terror. A palace untouched by human hand, with its gardens of rock and water where living creatures play the part of flowers, is the goal of all our striving. Philippe Diole. The Undersea Adventure. 1953.
but it's more than four lines. so we'll have to settle for a quote from the great Zappa the Elder:
quote: Vigilo sicco qua huskies vado, quod dont vos eat ut crocus snow. ~Frank Zappa
which is latin for those sage words: watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow.

I see through this attempt to stop me posting for a round.
To make it easier, here is some information about me. Humour is very very important to me. Married, two kids 9 and 6. Sometimes is more mature than the kids. But only sometimes. Studying some theology. Writes some bad creative short stories. works in a hospital ICU. Grew up with Monty Python and the Goodies. In front of me on my desk I have the omnibus of Gary Larson, Calvin and Hobbes, three works on the atonement and a plastic pirate hook. Loves Jazz. Loves Diana Krall. Unerring knack of killing gold fish. Loves fantasy. Scuba Dives.
My favourite sig will stay at least until Christmas. QM, could you please notify me of the end of the round.

The PATDYS signature of the future.
quote: I am not very interesting but I make up for it by not being funny.
Or is this a description of myself. Whatever, I am still using it for my entry.

I have read and taken note, and came up with this.
quote: Do you believe in the devil? You know, a supreme evil being dedicated to the temptation, corruption, and destruction of man?
I'm not sure that man needs the help. Calvin & Hobbes

Quotes I Would love to Use
Pure brute force and ignorance, but Driven so much faster Yellow streaks come flashing by 'Sno wonder he's a disaster Ann Loved the creativity and self depreciation
"Ethics - it's not just a game of Whack-A-Mole." LadyA Made me laugh
"My shipmates went to the Knockout Quiz, and instead of a T-shirt they got me this lousy new sig." caty the southerner Made me laugh a lot
PATDYS: proudly tangenting since 2005 icklejen damn, you are onto me
I am not very interesting but I make up for it by not being funny. Rugasaw Made me laugh a lot, and self depreciating
Do you believe in the devil? You know, a supreme evil being dedicated to the temptation, corruption, and destruction of man? I'm not sure that man needs the help. Calvin & Hobbes Doublethink Sadly Accurate
Quotes I Would Possibly use
To [Chesterton], Christianity wasn't a chore and a strain - it was something that illuminated his whole being, bringing laughter and joy and hope. In an age where Christianity is more akin to constipation than laughter, we desperately need more like him. – Cheesemeister Hart I did enjoy this, but hadn’t used it. Possibly too long for me?
"Laughter and tears are both responses to frustration and exhaustion. I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward." ~Kurt Vonnegut Chicklegirl Made me laugh and I appreciated the sad edge
The Australian equivalent of Prozac. Quizmaster Made me laugh a lot, too upbeat for my sig possibly- now exlax or ipecac…
"...and so, ladies & gentlemen, as the goldfish of time swims round the bowl of fate, before being flushed round the U-bend of eternity..." flags_fiend enjoyed the quote but don’t know the source well enough
More slush than drizzle. Chorister This was fun and pithy
Quotes I probably wouldn’t use
Vigilo sicco qua huskies vado, quod dont vos eat ut crocus snow. ~Frank Zappa Comet Liked this, but Latin is too high brow for my sig
Providing Asshats, Trolls, (and) Dipwads Yahweh's Smitings. JediJudi It was funny, but I couldn’t see it adorning my All Saints posts.
PatDYS: Spikey davelarge I appreciate the connection, but never got into Buffy I’m afraid
The best of a bad bunch The Kipper grins, I should really only pay out myself in my sig
Quotes I Couldn’t Use A vivid sense of delight takes hold of one, when for the first time one penetrates the surface. 1953. Comet – too long I like this. I get a real sense of the wonder of God diving. Leafy sea dragons and rock formations shout out 'Not only I am your God who made these, but I have a damn good sense of humour too
Hmmmm.
So, I could divide the quotes into these groups, but then struggled over where to go from here. So I looked at the thread again and the rules.
The Rules In a departure from convention (just for a change) Pure as The Driven Yellow Snow is to be handed a bye for this round.
And I saw one more quote I had missed.
Clearly not an adorable ickle cutie-pie fuzzum-wuzzums. Patdys
I liked this quote, but of all the others, it is the only quote I was seeking to get rid of. It clearly came last. I looked at the rules and saw I was handed a bye. Tangentially, I read this as a goodbye.
So, I have identified the worst entry; the only quote I would dispose of; honoured the letter of the rules, and twisted them to my own purposes. I'm a happy man.
So farewell Patdys. And thankyou all for the quotes
