September the 3rd, 1781 AD, Birth of Zaphod Beeblebrox, in Betelgeuse Five

Age on Death is a little tricky, but he is still going strong in year 576 thousand million and 5560 AD (the Big Crunch, or Gnab Gib: the Universe collapses and terminates).

I make Zaphod 576,000,003,779 years old at the time of the end of the universe where further spacetime seems meaningless.

You may however choose to disagree.

[Edited to add that the good quizmaster, having played with us before, knows the value of median over mean when dealing with answers of madness.] [Big Grin]

Of the three ways of calculating average (mathematically), the mode is the one you've got most of - very popular, "very modish, modom". The median is the medium one - the one in the middle. The mean is the one which makes you do all the work; adding up all the fiddly numbers and dividing by the number you first thought of - very mean, especially at the end of the lesson just before playtime.

If you've got a large enough amount of things nearly the same, for example, the heights of a class of seven year olds, the three averages will be the same; if you plot them on a chart you'll have an even, bell shaped curve with all three averages at the top of the bell.

If you have an odd mixture, like the market value of the homes in a street of large old houses, most of which have been turned into flats, you'll have a skewed curve, like a children's slide with a steep rise at the low end - most of the homes are cheap flats, but a stretched out line the other side where the unconverted homes are worth more money. There the mode is at the top of the curve, but the median and mean are part way down the slide.

And, having different values for average can be used by politicians to sell you whichever policy fits - "As the average* price is so low, you can't ...", "As the average** price is high, you can all afford to ..."

* Mode
** Median or mean

Motecuhzoma Xocoyotzin, last emperor of the Triple Alliance. Died in 1520 at the age of 54. Scholars disagree about whether he was killed by his own subjects or by the Spanish conquistadors who held him hostage. Still, he has his revenge.

it's the %27 in the URL - the special code for a ' mark

The URL subsitutor thingy in the UBB code doesn't like them

it's what you get when silly people insist on having spaces (%20) and other punctuation marks in their webpage filenames/addresses.

I blame microsoft for making it possible to have proper punctuation in filenames.

Alexander the Great (July 20 356 BC – June 10 323 BC) survived to the ripe old age of 32 years, nearly 33.

Quite a lot is known about him, but some of the lesser known facts include the fact that he was not very good at juggling. In fact if his greatness had been measured according to his juggling ability rather than his ability to invade other people's countries then he would have earned the epithet of "Alexander the Marginally Good at Best". Just goes to show how biased historians are towards people with anti-social tendencies rather than those with dexterity.

Read more about this fascinating character in this highly interesting article, even if its accuracy may be described as "qualified".

Don't forget, you new entrants, that the qualifying event for the quiz this year is the anagram of a celebrity as per the OP. Please add yours so that we can spend another few hours with our Scrabble tiles.

By the way there is only one Z, J and Q in Scrabble so it would help if your anagrams did not exceed this limit. Thanks. [Biased]

I am so pleased the quiz is on again! Thank you quizzy and all who make it so much fun.

My entry is Eleanor of Aquitaine who was incredibly strong and magnificant organiser, a ruler in her own right and married to two different kings. Eleanor lived from 1122 to 1204, she was 82 when she died.

OH my anagram for the entry was addiction ark .

Dear Quizmaster:

I expected more, however: the message doesn't appear to be a code! [Biased]

lots of love back,

Dear rest of you:
if you're wondering what the heck I'm talking about, perhaps this will help.

The Master of 5 Masters
the Quiz-king and potent8:
Spent 6 minutes this morning
2 seek one in coldest state.

northwest, in land of the 3
and home of brave; 3 times
always charm; 6 pleases me.
2 more and 5 and 4 rhymes,

and we're close! 3PO sings
2 the Master's 4 pupils,
6 times the chant of seven.
3 to 7 more scruples.

If you've gotten this far, child -
your grey cells are the strongest.
But to abuse the answer
would just be the most wrongest.

A Nibble Ye is the anagram of someone who would look up to our Quizmaster and they might enjoy each others company riding around together.

For my historical person I'll go for James Daly who was a Dublin theatre owner. His name comes up with inventing the word 'quiz' in 1791 even though there is nothing to substantiate it, but an interesting link and hey, he got his name out there!

(This post in honour of our beloved Quizmaster who tapped into my junk mail which I just now discovered.)

Scrabble holds a special place in my heart because long, long ago when I was single, it was my litmus test for selecting the future Mr. Chickle (I flatly refused to marry anyone who couldn't beat me at Scrabble). And a wee bit o' trivia: Bad Restful Mothers is an anagram for the inventor of Scrabble (but I digress!)

As useful as you may find your Scrabble set to be, I heartily recommend a vastly superior secret to success for KOQ Round 1 ...

Inspired by this thread, I have bought a Scrabble game. This is entirely because you've reminded me how much I like playing it, and I haven't had access to a set since I moved out of my parents' home.

It has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that writing the anagram letters on little bits of paper just isn't the same. [Hot and Hormonal] [Disappointed]

SIGN UP NOW - Check in once a day to play this game.

Spreadsheet now created - On my new computer as I listen to Spurs miss yet another chance against Arsenal as we are now 2-1 up after being 1-0 down. Arsenal TV was the nicest birthday present from my wife.

Smudgie is in whether she likes it or not, until she fails to post. It only takes a cursory check once a night to play this game.

We will begin for real in the next few days, so get your references saved in favourites, and get set for an autumn full of fun.

That is hardly surprising, since I am a lousy speller. In actual fact the anagram should be

an allegorical weld

Looks like I will be starting the Quiz with the highest number of negative points. [Hot and Hormonal] Sorry Quizzy.

Even so, North Americans are unlikely to get this, with the possible exception of rugasaw.

For once, I am thankful for the illiteracy of many on the internet. Googling (what I think is) the answer with one 'l' instead of two in the appropriate place will still get you pages and pages of hits, which convinced me my answer was correct. On the other hand, I am now kicking myself for not googling the correct spelling which has thousands of pages of hits.

Quizmaster, please have mercy on my mis-spelled anwswer. It was Jonah's fault. [ [Razz] to Jonah behind QM's back]

Finally a thread which I feel like joining in on!

Will help while away those hours of not looking after a toddler and new born (not due to November). When are these hours? I'm not sure...!

Anyway, I'm going for Claude Monet - born November 14th 1840 and one of my favourite artists - not just because he painted pretty pictures. Died aged 86 so I'm hoping that he's not going to be in the middle.

Smudgie - how can you say that having your house rearranged means you can't join in the quiz? They're not knocking the whole thing down...! Come on, you know you want to.

Anagram will be pmmed to you shortly oh Masterly QM.
