I found Mertseger's v hard too [Confused] . I'm glad you enjoyed learning about flags, and the chemistry questions were meant to be difficult (I'm holding out hope that there is a fellow chemist on here somewhere that can answer the questions more easily as I only need one person to get those right!).

I'm no chemist but I tried! It's one of those situations where I could find the information, but it was all so far above my head that I can only guess that what I picked out of it was what you were looking for.

The only question that I couldn't come up with ANY answer for was: "Who saved Slick from eternal damnation?"

I found that Wikipedia had a helpful disambiguation list for Slick, which helped me a great deal with that one. There was one very obvious candidate.

[ETA: By which I mean a candidate for the Slick referred to in the question, rather than the answer to the question. IYSWIM.]

I was tempted to give the standard preacher's answer , but I didn't want it to evolve into a sermon series!

Interestingly, the standard preacher's answer is a possibility since Jesus is a character in the fictional universe containing Slick. Unfortunately, in the relevant story line Jesus does not save Slick from damnation.

I was thinking Jesus, too! [Smile]

Some of the questions were pretty easy. I think I took a pass on two, however.

Very interesting questions all around, though!

Yep. I had our favorite Jedi in mind when I came up with that question. As the geek theme developed, I knew I would have to have a Star Wars question.

BRONZE MEDAL DECIDER : CHARITY SITES

This one came back to me as we used it many years ago.

You have to find and list in a single PM to me as many charity sites as you can locate on the internet.

The sites must be ones that promise to donate money based merely on us clicking on their site.

I will list all the sites once I have received them and we can click and donate to charity.

You have until 22:00 UK time on Wednesday to collect these sites and PM me in a single PM.

The person who collects fewest valid sites will be eliminated.

ALSO RAN ENTRIES EQUALLY WELCOME.

THE PILGRIM PM

OK, here’s my list of Click donation sites. I didn’t even know that this concept existed, let alone that there were so many sites that use it. These four “clearinghouse” sites can be used for making multiple donations at one site with one click. They also serve as links to all the other sites I have listed below where you can donate site by site. I’m sure there are many, many more that I just haven’t stumbled across the right words to Google for.

As a long-time follower of that particular webcomic, I thought I knew the answer as soon as I read the question.

Of course, I'd forgotten that Slick has been to Hell twice now. The first time 'Nique saved him with a "Get Out Of Hell Free" card, and the second time he was saved by a stoned Squig riding a flying sofa.

I think Mertseger was thinking of the second instance.

My answer was "Monique", after some intensive web-trawling turned up the episode with the "Get Out of Hell Free" card. I was a little disappointed that Mertseger had specified a different answer, but I got 36 as an Also-Ran, so it seems rather over-the-top to quibble.

Gwai - in amongst your tags, you had opened a "strong" which you attempted to close with a "/qb"

I could fix it for you, but then your edit message wouldn't make sense.

I could delete the edit message, but then this post would be made redundant.

I could then delete this post, but hosts deleting whole posts is usually only for emergency purposes.

THE FINAL : PICTURES OF QUIZMATES

I require three posts from each of you in this final.

N.B. A Quizmate is a shipmate whose name appears somewhere in the Knockout Quiz 2008 thread.

The first post should be 10 links to 10 pictures representing 10 quizmates. You two and the Also Rans have to guess which quizmate is represented by which picture. These are to be easy and a point will be deducted for each guess by anyone which is not the quizmate that you specify in your PM to me which should be sent to me when you post.

ANYONE MAY GUESS ONCE THE POST IS MADE.

The second post should be another 10 links to 10 pictures representing 10 quizmates. Half the guesses for these pictures should be correct. You will lose a point for each guess over half those who try which is wrong. You should PM me the answers at the time you post this list.

ANYONE MAY GUESS ONCE THE POST IS MADE.

The third post should be another 10 links to 10 pictures representing 10 quizmates. Points will be lost here if any Also Ran can justify the name of another quizmate, not the one you specified, as an answer to the picture you have linked to. You should PM me the answers at the time you post.

ANYONE MAY GUESS ONCE THE POST IS MADE.

The first post should be on this thread by Monday 8th December at 22:00 U.K. time. The second post should be on this thread by Tuesday 9th December at 22:00 U.K. time. The third post should be on this thread by Wednesday 10th December at 22:00 U.K. time.

The competitors should post me their best guess of their opponents pictures once all three posts have been made. Their starting score will be the number of correct answers.

READ THE RULES CAREFULLY AND WORK OUT THE BEST WAY TO WIN.

Good Luck.

QM, much as I love your Knockout quiz, please don't have rounds which encourage people to post so many links - they take a l-o-n-g time to check. Ta muchly, Chorister, Host.

Very well done, both of you! Some were quite easy, others very hard indeed! I'm only confident that I got about half of them right. [Overused]

Indeed, that's about where I'm at for flags_fiend's pictures. I suspect that difficulty will win out and that flags_fiend has triumphed. Well played, flags_fiend!

I'm thinking I'd better excuse myself. I don't want to mess it up for you all. There are some I just don't get.

Please do join if you have any interest at all. People not getting the pictures is an important part of the deductions. You can't mess things up any worse than flag_fiend and I have already made things for ourselves.

After a couple of hours of google-fu and wiki-jitsu I have posted my answers off to the QM. All I can say is you two have very devious minds - interesting to finally learn the meaning of a certain person's name too.

You see, I'm finding yours really difficult - so i think it is probably a case of they are only easy when you know the answer.

Quizmaster, is there a deadline for Also-Rans to post their answers to you? I don't think you specified one, and I wouldn't want to miss out.

I'm having too much difficulty on the last ones. I just don't seem to have the time to research. There's a picture of a state that doesn't match any state that I know of. I went to the website the drawing came from, thinking that maybe it's a region or a more local area and I don't see ANYthing like it on the website .... Finally, I had to get my kid some dinner.

I'm sorry, y'all! This Wrestler is holering, "Uncle!"

eta: I can't wait to see the answers! It'll probably seem so obvious then! [Biased]
