Ok, all well now. Should've known when I didn't get any replies here. Blame it on POTUS election sleep deprivation.
Restarted both main machine and DSL modem, cleared cache etc, et voila.

Please can any music/geek people help me? Don't know if this should be on this thread, but don't know where else to post.
I'm trying to think of things to get my boyf for Christmas. I know he would like a digital audio recorder, to record clips of things like churchbells and birds and motorbikes and do fun sampling things with them on t'computer.
I like making crocheted stuff and badges and weird plushie animals - I have no idea about digital gagetry.
But but but, these digital audio recording thingies seem to be over £150, which is far too expensive for me. I googled around and found this.
Does anyone know if it looks any good? I'd hate to get him something rubbish... Worry worry worry...

Hello geeks!
I'm hoping you can help me with a problem - my computer's chat applications aren't working. I am running Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) and I use Pidgin to access Yahoo! messenger. It was working fine on Tuesday evening, but now I get a message that says
quote: [username] disconnected: Could not establish a connection with the server: Error resolving scs.msg.yahoo.com: Name or service not known
As though this weren't traumatic enough, I also can't access the Ship's cafe (which was also fine on Tuesday evening). The "exception" (whatever that is) message says:
quote: CouldNotLoadArgumentException[ Could not load file/URL specified: /home/[username]/.java/deployment/cache/6.0/30/418bc09e-36d8428e] at com.sun.javaws.Main.launchApp(Main.java:253) at com.sun.javaws.Main.continueInSecureThread(Main.java:210) at com.sun.javaws.Main$1.run(Main.java:107) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:619)
There is also a "wrapped exception":
quote: java.io.FileNotFoundException: /home/[username]/.java/deployment/cache/6.0/30/418bc09e-36d8428e (No such file or directory) at java.io.FileInputStream.open(Native Method) at java.io.FileInputStream.<init>(FileInputStream.java:106) at java.io.FileInputStream.<init>(FileInputStream.java:66) at com.sun.javaws.jnl.LaunchDescFactory.buildDescriptor(LaunchDescFactory.java:126) at com.sun.javaws.Main.launchApp(Main.java:248) at com.sun.javaws.Main.continueInSecureThread(Main.java:210) at com.sun.javaws.Main$1.run(Main.java:107) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:619)
The unofficial cafe seems to be working fine though.
Please help. I am the wrong sort of geek.

Looks ok to me, Earwig. Won't be too spectacular as a machine, but it's certainly not rubbish.
I found this review (in German) on a musicians' site; if you put it through a translator, you'll get this here, which even seems to make sense - perhaps you want to check for yourself, or make your son look at it (except it's a secret pressie ).
Now, if musicians use it that thing, and for that price (in Euros though, as I see), it looks like quite a decent little machine. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

Rufiki, I've linked your post to the 'Café now testing' thread in Styx. As it affects the SoF Cafe, might be a matter for official investigation...

Thank you! That's a helpful review. It is indeed a secret pressie, for my boyfriend, not son - I'm far too young to have kids!
Seriously, many thanks.

Rufiki, I think that 'cache' was the clue in your error messages. It sounds like your system had helpfully remembered where java was no longer living, or something along those lines.

On this web page (Children's Society Young Carers Iniative), there is a link (labelled "Resources section download [PDF]") which doesn't work. The address which doesn't work is:
http://www.youngcarer.com/pdfs/Making%20it%20Work%20Resources.pdf
(- although, when one clicks the link from the previous web-page, there are spaces where it says "%20" above (when I copied link location the spaces were somehow converted into "%20" each time).)
Is there anything obviously wrong with:
http://www.youngcarer.com/pdfs/Making%20it%20Work%20Resources.pdf
as a web address, such that geeks here might be able to guess what the correct address is? If so, what would your guesses at the correct address be?
Thanking you in advance

Browsers (and I think web servers) don't like spaces in the address bar and so a space just gets converted to %20.

I'd suggest sending an e-mail to them (there's a link on that page) and tell them. Some files like that pdf tend to be poorly embedded; not everybody is an expert webmaster.

Hellllllp!!
I know there is something wrong with my computer but I don't know what!! it is a pc and I'm running xp professional
By some fluke I found that I have not been automatically updated since October 07... I have found that there is now a service pack three. I think that could come in handy. When I attempt to down load it the update site just sits there. Sometimes I get the little green boxes - like it is looking for something and other times I just get a rectangle. Nothing happens either way.
Do I need to be concerned? Will service pack 3 help with my webmail problem? ie I can't open my inbox??? I can surf and open some other webmails.. I am confusing myself

Anyone know why quicktime has stopped my mp3 files from playing from IE7? Mozilla works fine, but when I try & play from within IE7, it just sits there & does nothing. If I uninstall quicktime, they play fine, but my son will reinstall it so he can use i-tunes. Thanks

Vascopyjama, you can safely install SP2, and if you need to, SP3 as well, though there is some software which may no longer work with SP3. (That's why I'm still on SP2 myself, but might eventually need to install that too.)
Can you say more on your internet connection? Broadband or cable I assume? What are your puter specs? How much free space have you got on your drive? [ 15. November 2008, 07:48: Message edited by: Wesley J ]

AUGH! I have a document stuck in the print queue that simply will.not.go.away! I googled
quote: Windows XP "document stuck in the print queue"
and found a lot of nonsense and one wonderful site that says "reboot the computer. If that doesn't work turn the printer on and off." You mouth-breathing morons, I wouldn't have gone surfing for an answer if those had already worked.
I'd like to be able to print again. Does anybody here have any REAL advice? Please?

Yes. Click on Start>Run>type "net stop spooler" (minus quotes).
Ought to work...

Anyone know a website where I can get a second quote for a basic business standard laptop. No not for me, for a small charity I do some voluntary work for. They want a laptop so it can be locked in a cupboard, not so as to carry it around. I have a quote from Dell but I want a second as I am aware when I looked at basic home machines for myself that Viglen came in cheaper. Unfortunately I have failed to get a quote off the Viglen site.

Right lets get this clear, I am look at a business laptop not a home or home office laptop. This matters as the business laptops are of a higher build spec. You appear to get less for your money but in fact what you get is a lot more reliable. So the one it probably against the bottom two of this range.
It is being able to quote for business specification machines that is important.

What is the best way to dispose of a broken DVD drive? Having successfully replaced it at the weekend, I find that I am not supposed to put it out in the bin for landfill, and my local authority doesn't specify what they do with discarded electronic equipment.

I think under the WEE directive in the UK whoever you bought your new DVD drive from is obliged to take your old one and dispose of it for you.

I've currently got a 17" (with I guess 16" real screen size) TRT monitor for my desktop. It runs on 85Hz and 1152 x 864 resolution (XGA+); this means it is basically flicker-free, shows a reasonably big desktop area, and a very sharp and clear image compared to anything I've had before.
The graphics card, I'm afraid, is only an ATI Radeon X-300 (or 500), so not very powerful, though it's quite all right really for now. (I'm told that upgrading a graphics card in a DELL is nearly impossible to due lack of space.)
So, although this CRT monitor is rather ok, I'm looking into eventually getting a bigger, TFT LCD flat panel one, perhaps a widescreen 22" or 24" WUXGA, with e.g. 1920 x 1200 resolution. I'd like to have somewhat more desktop space, and could then display two documents side by side, like on a laptop 15.4" widescreen.
But what would I need to look out for? The general advantages of an LCD flatpanel monitor are clear, such as it being lighter, using much less desk space, etc. My question is more about the display options and the display qualities of an LCD vs a TFT monitor, and less so about the connections (DVI etc).
The following points I'm not sure about, and would warmly appreciate you comments on:
- Is an LCD monitor generally less strenuous on the eyes?
- I kinda like the robust, heavy construction of the CRT monitor and its glass screen. You can actually touch it and clean it more easily than a laptop LCD screen. How robust and stable are LCD screens?
- Would the WUXGA resolution mean that I could basically have the same display size as on my 17" XGA+, but with additional space? Is WUXGA still fairly easily readable?
- What about 'ghosting' due to delayed reaction of an LCD monitor? The ones I'm looking at have got a 6 or 5ms reaction time. Do you see (literally...) that as a problem?
- What about the colours displayed on an LCD? Can they be as crisp as on a TFT?
- Can we say that LCD monitors of that size really use less energy than a TFT?
Thank you for your help. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

> * Is an LCD monitor generally less strenuous on the eyes? - personal/subjective view but I would say 'Yes'.
> * I kinda like the robust, heavy construction of the CRT monitor and its glass screen. You can actually touch it and clean it more easily than a laptop LCD screen. How robust and stable are LCD screens? - no problems cleaning, and unless you're in the habit of dropping your screen/spilling coffee all over it, a TFT is probably as or more robust than a CRT monitor.
* Would the WUXGA resolution mean that I could basically have the same display size as on my 17" XGA+, but with additional space? Is WUXGA still fairly easily readable? - depends on the size/resolution you want; running two screens side by side is another option if you need concurrent access to more than one document/application.
* What about 'ghosting' due to delayed reaction of an LCD monitor? The ones I'm looking at have got a 6 or 5ms reaction time. Do you see (literally...) that as a problem? - never been an issue on my three year old Dell TFT, and my kids run their £D games on it.
* What about the colours displayed on an LCD? Can they be as crisp as on a TFT? - general feeling is that for professional use, where accurate colour matching is a must, a good CRT is better. I wouldn't know, but suspect unless you work at that kind of level you won't notice any difference.
* Can we say that LCD monitors of that size really use less energy than a TFT? - Yes, as far as I know, but you can go and do your own research. ;-) [ 23. November 2008, 18:04: Message edited by: pen&ink ]

I'm having a problem trying to get my email working on my new laptop. It's running Vista with Word Mail as the email. I thought I had it connected but now every time I try and connect I get an error message! "0x800CCC0E"
I know it's not the line or the broadband router because it all still works fine with my old desktop which has XP and Outlook. But when I unplug the desktop and plug the laptop cable in the same socket on the router, that's what I get. Any suggestions?

Thanks for this, yes I do have Norton so that looks like the most likely culprit. I'll try it when I get home tonight.

One of my colleagues has got a problem with her computer- specifically when typing in a word document. Suddenly it will only type capitals. She has presses the CAPS LOCK button, but it just gives her a larger capital letter when she does that.
Obviously she has managed to press something to change the settings somewhere... any idea how to shift it back?

Does this happen everywhere on the computer, or just in the particular software she is using (e.g. Word, Office, Publisher etc.)? What operating system and software is she using when this problem occurs?

Sounds like she's inadvertently switched to a font where lowercase is small capitals and uppercase is large capitals.

I am sorry if this has been covered before, (and apologies if it has been>)
I use media centre for my tv/video needs, except that the guide has become corrupted and I cant then record any of the stuff I normally watch.
How do I restore normality to 1:1?
Thank you geeks ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

I'm not sure if it's possible to give advice on this one but here's hoping!
My laptop (an Acer 3662 WLMi, according to the label stuck on it) is fifteen months old. Approximately three months ago, the internal mouse stopped working. "That's disappointing," I thought, "but I suppose these things do die eventually, though this is a bit earlier than I'd have hoped for." After trying to operate it with the tab and windows keys for a few days, I bought myself a USB mouse, plugged it in and happily used that for a month.
One day, whilst the other mouse was sitting there, I, unthinkingly, started to use the internal one. After about five minutes, I thought "Wow! My mouse has come back to life." I unplugged the other mouse and have been happily using the internal one since.
Until today. Suddenly, about half an hour ago, the internal mouse stopped working. I've turned the laptop off and on (and off and on, thinking about it) and it seems it has indeed gone again.
Will it come back? Is there a way I can make it come back?
Many thanks for your thoughts

And, while troublesome mice (you could always call it Jerry) are focusing greater minds than mine, could someone tell me how to back my files up to my new Seagate 120gb HD Go USB device? My device manager tells me it's there, but I can't work out how to save things to it, or whether it has anything saved to it. When I go into "My Computer" the only icons that appear are "My Documents", "My Little Pony" (no that was a joke), "Shared Documents", the Acer C drive and a DVD RW Drive that I've never used nor understood.
I want to back up to my expensive new Seagate 120gb HD Go USB device ![[Waterworks]](graemlins/bawling.gif)

unplug it new drive.
turn off you machine
restart machine
get fully up and working
plug it in again
Make yourself a cup of tea and biscuit.
Return to machine and hopefully it should ask how you want to look at the drive.
My guessing is that sometimes there is a failure to load drivers properly. This means a usb connected hard-disk does not always appear when it should. The above routine has nearly always let me see a flash drive that has failed to mount before. The normal way I do this is to connect a drive between starting the machine and logging in.
