2011 was a good year for celebrity deaths: Dictators, rock stars, and actors; those loved, hated, and tolerated; the old, young, and in-between. The question is, is there any way that 2012 can top it? Well, let's find out: I am pleased to announce the 2012 Ship of Fools Celebrity Death Pool.

This OP is largely the same as last year, so if you're an old hand at this game there won't be any surprises. If you've not partaken of this seasonal delight in the past, then please read the introduction and rules below.

For the uninitiated, the gist of it is that you have to pick who is going to die in the next calendar year. If one of your choices does pop their clogs, you are awarded points as explained below. The winner is the person with the most points. The deadline for posting your list is the end of this year (which we shall take to be 23.59 EST on December 31st, 2011) and if you miss this deadline you will not be able to take any further part.

So, have fun, think carefully, and read the rules below!
  1. You must pick 13 well-known people whom you think will shuffle off this mortal coil in 2012. That is, starting from 00.01 EST on January 1st 2012 and ending at 23.59 EST on December 31st 2012.
  2. The definition of well-known is that their deaths will be reported by at least one major news outlet. Examples outlets include (but are not limited to) The Guardian, CNN, IMDB, Al Jezeera, or the Church Times(!).
  3. All selections must be real people: No fictional characters, please.
  4. Points are awarded according to the following formula: 100 minus the celebrity's age at the time of death. For example, if the person you choose dies at the age of 67, you will earn 33 points.
  5. You earn 50 bonus points if the death occurs in such a way as to clearly prove the existence of God (for example, if some doofus dies from burns after trying to torch a church).
  6. You cannot choose anyone under the age of 18.
You can choose an inmate scheduled to be executed, but you only earn points if the person dies by some means other than the state-sponsored execution. For example, a shiv in the stomach counts, lethal injection does not.
  7. You are disqualified if you contribute in any way to the death of one of your chosen candidates. The one exception is if you are a police officer or member of the armed services and kill someone in the line of duty.
  8. All entries must be submitted on this thread no later than 23.59 EST on December 31st 2011. No entries will be accepted after this time. You may however make changes to your list up until this time, but only if someone pops their clogs before the beginning of the year or you've put someone in twice.

There are also a couple of extraneous categories:
  • Inside Track with the Grim Reaper Award: person who picks the first death of 2012.
  • Quantity Not Quality Award: person who picks the most people who croak in 2012, regardless of their points value.

This is now the 9th time we have done this, and each time someone questions the merits of what we are doing. Please bear in mind:
  • This is only a game,
  • These are not death "Wish Lists" - You choose who you think might die, not who you want to die.
  • The Circus is the place for games, not discussion, so debating the rights and wrongs of what we are doing should be done somewhere else.

Have fun!

Edited to add:
The leaderboard is now up and running, and can be found here.

Here's my little list - and there's precious few of them that would be missed!

1. Murdoch of Twisted News Corp.

2. General Than Shwe, leader of the military government in Burma.

3. L K Advani - Indian politician and promoter of hatred and communal violence.

4. Thatcher, Margaret Hilda the truly appalling.

5. Newt Gingrich, would-be President of the USA.

6. Jean Marie LePen, French politician and promoter of hatred and communal violence.

7. Robert Mugabe, the ruination of Zimbabwe.

8. Bal Thackeray - another promoter of hatred and communal violence in India, and admirer of Hitler.

9. Pat Robertson - alleged Christian.

10. Ian Paisley - another alleged Christian and promoter of hatred and communal violence in Ireland this time.

11. John McCain - I reckon that the election campaign did nothing to add to his health.

12. Gerry Adams - just to be fair.

13. Philip Mountbatten, of Greece, Denmark and Britain, husband of "Brenda".

Right, I'm getting my list in early this year. Missing the deadline last time round resulted in three(!) of my regulars falling off the perch, and I'm not missing out again.

I'm majoring on ailing despots and ex-despots with a few random others thrown in for good measure.

1. Margaret Thatcher (if I take her off the list she'll die to spite me - pretty surprised she didn't keel over this year, TBH. Yes I do have her in the ailing ex-despots category [Two face] .)
2. Fidel Castro
3. Hosni Mubarak
4. Peter Stringfellow (long shot - but I personally have a theory that he's dead already and just hasn't stopped moving about)
5. Ronnie Biggs
6. Abdelbaset al Megrahi
7. Silvio Berlusconi
8. Paul Daniels (just because)
9. Billy Graham
10. Michael Douglas
11. King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia
12. Hugo Chavez
13. Ben Jonson (Olympic cheat and famous anabolic steroid abuser - bad for the heart)

Actually I want to tweak my list a wee bit. Off comes Stephen Fry at number 10 and in goes Ion Iliescu, former president of Romania. Fewer points, but more likely points [Smile] (no I don't have insider information, but he is knocking on a bit). So the list now looks like this:

1. Margaret Thatcher
2. Robert Mugabe
3. Brad Pitt
4. Katie Price (aka Jordan)
5. Nelson Mandela
6. Rolf Harris
7. Alex Ferguson
8. Prince Harry
9. Stephen Hawking
10. Ion Iliescu
11. George H Bush
12. Hamid Karzai
13. Rupert Murdoch

now I'm in a quandry. for 2011 I took out 2 of my regulars for 2 new people. nothing happened to any of the 4, and only 1 of my regulars passed away, so now i've got too many to choose from, and I know what will happen to whoever leave out.

Sod it. Robert Downey Jr is bound to last another year, so let's go for:

Buzz Aldrin
Ursula Andress
Bernie Ecclestone
Ringo Starr
Lou Ferrigno
Aretha Franklin
Elliott Gould
Shane McGowan
Gary Numan
Delia Smith
Adam West
Roy Wood
Stanley Baxter

If Wikipedia is to be believed, he will turn 18 on March 1, so maybe we can agree to a compromise: No points if he dies before March 1, 2012. Full points if he shuffles off his mortal coil on March 1 or thereafter.

Good to go!

Politicians whose time is up:
Margaret Thatcher
Gough Whitlam
Fidel Castro
Hosne Mubarak

Tottering princes:
Pope Benny
HRH Phillip

Celebs whose star is waning:
Hugh Hefner (surely all shagged out by now)
Snoop Dog (because no one called that can expect to live to an old age)

Sports stars:
Mohammed Ali
Alvaro Bautista (one of the unluckiest motorbike riders on the circuit)

I did briefly consider some older female hollywood celebs, but figured that much botox and silicon has to have a preservative value. Micky Rooney will be like George Burns - just laughing stops you dying, while Rupert Murdoch is just too plain pernickety to lie down and die yet.
