Same old, same old list from last year. Every year it seems one overhyped young celebrity dies tragically young ... but it's never one of the ones on my list, so perhaps I really am giving them the gift of Endless Youth ...
1. Paris Hilton 2. Lindsay Lohan 3. Jessica Simpson 4. Amy Winehouse 5. Mary-Kate Olsen 6. Ashley Olsen 7. Nicole Ritchie 8. Brad Pitt 9. Angelina Jolie 10. Jennifer Aniston 11. Vince Vaughan 12. Owen Wilson 13. Orlando Bloom

Uriel has given some excellent advice upthread to you aspiring DP players. I improved my, um, hit rate when I found a link to the then-current alt.tasteless dead pool and studied the list of the 4-years-in-a-row winner (her title is MCB, for Most Cynical B---). Anyone who survived was on my list. I also found something called "The Death List".
I think Peter Falk is the only one from the MCB I'm not picking up this year, in favor of some younger folks.
So here's my list for '10:
Kim Jong-il (although I hear he is better) Muhammed Ali Seve Ballesteros Rev. Billy Graham A. A. M. al-Megrabi (Lockerbie bomber) Margaret Thatcher Amy Winehouse Elizabeth Taylor Robert Mugabe (this is probably my real "death wish", here) Keith Richards (it's a frackin' miracle he's lived so long) Stephen Hawking (ditto) Elizabeth Edwards (whose two-timing husband appears distressingly healthy, more's the pity) Roger Ebert
After Jan 1, I'll post the "ones that got away" so you can point and laugh at me if they finally die this year.

Some recycling from me, with the deceased duly replaced. A reprieve for Ariel Sharon (who shows no sign of getting switched off any time soon) and Joseph Kabila (the political situation in the Congo seems to have stabilised)
First the tyranical despots: 1) Kim Jong Il seems to have gotten better, but still not a well man 2) Fidel Castro more of entertaining despot, but sicker 3) Moussa Dadis Camara Head of the Guinean junta - one assassination attempt already
Released from prison on account of impending death: 4) Ronnie Biggs 5) Abdulbaset al Megrahi
The old and the sick 6) Margaret Thatcher if I take her off the list she'll die to spite me 7) Brian Wilson he of the Beach Boys. Looking in a bad way last time I saw him 8) Liz Taylor sick 9) Jimmy Saville old and a smoker 10) Johnny Halliday recent hospitalisation 11) Mohamed Ali sick
Wildcards 12) Peter Stringfellow walking corpse 13) Ben Johnson Olympic cheat and famous anabolic steroid abuser (bad for the heart)

Like all of my nominees for last year, I'm still alive. Here goes with a suspiciously similar roster for the forthcoming year:
1. Bernard Lawrence Madoff, record-breaking fraudster and former NASDAQ chairman (b. 29/04/1938) 2. Lt Gen Dr Mikhail Timofeevich Kalashnikov, gun and vodka magnate, Hero of Socialist Labour, Hero of the Russian Federation and Knight of St Andrew (b. 10/11/1919) 3. Margaret Hilda Thatcher, the Rt Hon the Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven LG, OM, PC, FRS (b. 13/10/1925) 4. The Rt Revd and Hon Dr Ian R K Paisley (Snr) MP, MLA, PC (b. 06/04/1926) (and I predict that he will pass away between the dissolution of Parliament and the General Election) 5. His Excellency Robert Gabriel Mugabe OJ (Hon), President of Zimbabwe (b. 21/02/1924) 6. Steven Paul Jobs, CEO of Apple, Inc. (b. 24/02/1955) 7. Boris Abramovich Berezovsky aka Platon Elenin (b. 21/03/1946) 8. Paul Francis Gadd, aka Gary Glitter (b. 08/05/1944) 9. Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz, Former President of Cuba, World Hero of Solidarity (b. 13/08/1926) 10. Fred Waldron Phelps Sr (b. 13/11/1929) 11. Marie-Christine Anna Agnes Hedwig Ida Windsor née von Reibnitz, HRH Princess Michael of Kent (b. 15/01/1945) 12. HRH Princess Alexandra Helen Elizabeth Olga Christabel of Kent, the Hon Lady Ogilvy LG, DCVO (b. 25/12/1936) 13. The Most Reverend Peter Jasper Akinola, Primate of Nigeria (b. 27/01/1944)
Yes, the only updates are the birthdates and a few changes of honours. Maybe I should submit this as my List of Life on the other thread...

Here's my entry. I've gone for a few of the elderly and infirm, but I've focused on possible assassination targets (which is probably a high-risk strategy). Anyhow, here are the vexed baker's dozen:- Seve Ballesteros
- Fidel Castro
- Jackie Charlton
- David Frost
- Nick Griffen
- Stephen Hawking
- Hamid Karzai
- Rupert Murdoch
- Cecile Richards
- Arial Sharon
- Mordechai Vanunu
- Murray Walker

Okay ... here's a further three:
- Bryce Courtenay. b. 14 August 1933 (Australo/South African novelist)
- Sam Hunt. b. 4 July 1946 (NZ poet)
- Colin "Pinetree" Meads. b. 3 June 1936. NZ rugby behemoth (named player of the {20th} century by NZ Rugby Football Union - lucky for him Rich McCaw arrived in the 21st century, but I realize most of you have no idea what I'm gabbling about so I'll shut up!)
That's pretty random.

I'm going for a thematic list this year.
Queen Elizabeth II Emperor Akihito King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia Margaret Thatcher Robert Mugabe Morgan Tsvangirai Nelson Mandela Moussa Dadis Camara (dictator of Guinea) Ariel Sharon Hugo Chavez Raul Castro Ali Abdullah Saleh (President of Yemen) Vladimir Putin
Obama would have fit the theme, but I just couldn't put him on my list.

Following the average performance of my Are You Being Served? theme list in 2009, I have decided to be competitve for 2010. I am therefore entering a "seriously ill" list, which runs as follows:
1) Cardinal Cahal Daly 2) Abdel Bassett Al-Megrahi 3) Umara Yar'Auda 4) The Duke of Roxburghe 5) Sara Payne 6) Teresa Heinz Kerry 7) Seve Ballesteros 8) Steve Prescott 9) Bryant Gumbel 10) Bernie Madoff 11) Elizabeth Edwards 12) Ronnie Biggs 13) Brian Lenihan
Should any of these pass away before midnight tonight I would also like to place the following on the subs bench:
Sub 1) Paul Allen Sub 2) Melanie Griffith Sub 3) John Hartson
The only way to play this game is on reports of ill health. Choosing someone for being disliked or a fast-living rock star is a weak strategy. That said, I would genuinely like to wish each and every one on my list all the best for 2010, and I hope I finish 2010 on zero points.

(e.g. jumped at for the 3rd time by a young lady in a red jumper, and this time she'll get 'im!) - 2. David Cameron, Head of UK conservatives
(e.g. finally caught up with by Lore, his evil twin) - 3. Tiger Woods, (s)ex-golf player
(e.g. clubbed dead by [ex-]wife or [ex-]lover[s]) - 4. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iranian Supreme Leader
(coz he's a nutter, and NOT Diana Ross) - 5. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iranian President
(e.g by falling into a very tiny tank of nuclear waste. Not just irate, but irradiated.) - 6. Amy Winehouse, singer and pop star
(Champagne bottles are not the only ones going pop. 'Captain, the liver canna take any more!') - 7. Barbara Bush, Silver Fox and wife of ex-US Prez Bush no. 1.
(The fox hunting season is on!) - 8. Bill Gates, Founder of successful, but somewhat crappy computer software
("The Pearly Gates can not be opened as Windows To Heaven has just crashed. Send error report.") - 9. David Blunkett, former UK Home Secretary
(e.g. by stumbling over his guide dog at home, into a secretaire) - 10. Fred Waldron Phelps, Sr., Westboro Baptist Church head
(e.g. in a gay nightclub, run by a massive former WBC member) - 11. Ian Richard Kyle Paisley, former leader of the DUP
(e.g. his vocal cords blow it, as does his aorta) - 12. Jacques Chirac, former French Prez
(e.g. mauled by his dog - again, but for good; though some might say, for food.) - 13. Anne Robinson, botoxed UK TV host

I was a little more successful in 2009, so I'm not assuming that I'll give the kiss of life anymore. I've tweaked the remainders a bit--I'm undoubtedly a horrible person since I have real twinges about removing someone from the list. I don't want to hear of their death and have the first thought in my mind be "Damn, why did I remove them from this year's list?"
Thanks to the Ship--and this game--I am aware of a much more international dying set. Here are my choices for 2010:
1. Cardinal Cahal Daly (OK, so he's 92--not very many points but he's a good shot for First Blood). 2. Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi. 3. Ronnie Biggs. 4. Peter Tork. 5. Ruth Bader Ginsberg. 6. Jerry Lewis 7. Robert Mugabe 8. Hamid Karzai 9. Steven Hawking 10. Elizabeth Taylor 11. Nancy Reagan 12. Billy Graham 13. Fidel Castro
If one of these pops in the next few hours, my alternates would be: A. Zsa-Zsa Gabor. B. Betty Ford.
I've left Amy Winehouse off the list this year, in spite of her youth and a self-destructive streak that is legendary across the continents.

Ye gods, as a non-news junkie, trying to sort a 13 out has been a bloomin' nightmare. I think I might stick to the fitness race next year. Or, of course, I could try to name it a bit further in advance...
1. Tiger Woods 2. Hugo Chavez 3. Rush Limbaugh 4. Sharif Ahmed (Somali President) 5. Russell Watson 6. Jimmy Armfield 7. Shahid Malik (Communities Minister) 8. Paul Gascoigne 9. Annemarie van Kesteren (wife of Man U goalie Edwin Van der Sar - so read the Sun for her...) 10. Alan Stanford 11. Bernie Madoff 12. Tony Blair 13. Jerry Lee Lewis (can you tell that I was getting a bit desperate towards the end...?)
Good luck... to some of them!

With some help from Sandemaniac in the collecting of names for a few (so I may have some typos as I can't always read his handwriting!)...
- Hamed Kazai (President of Afghanistan)
- Jalal Talabani (President of Iraq)
- Nouri al-Malik (PM of Iraq)
- Ayatollah Khamenei
- President Ahmedimjab of Iran
- Robert Mugabe
- Morgan Changerai
- Vladimir Putin
- Tony Blair
- Hu Jintao (Premier of People's Republic of China)
- Margaret Thatcher
- Neil Kinnock
- George W Bush
Some are a wish list, some are from being a bit of a political news-site reader. Some might be both

How deep is your substitutes' bench? You need to replace Cardinal Daly as well.

Kirstie Alley is morbidly obese. Shatner is a bloated boozebag. And did you see Nimoy in the latest Trek movie? He looks like the Crypt Keeper . [ 01. January 2010, 02:51: Message edited by: marmot ]

But, but, but...I had such a huge crush on Spock when I was young. In my mind, he always looks like he did when I was a teen.
