I would concur that any objections should be made when nominations are originally posted, so that shipmates can have a chance to change. And the "major news outlet" concept was the guideline for the sort of person who would be acceptable for nomination, not the criteria for points.
So, to conclude, if your list has been accepted, you are eligible for points if anyone on it pops their clogs.

This is the Circus. Too many rules are going to spoil the fun.
I'm not going to go over the entry lists to verify that the names are well-known enough to qualify. Neither, I'd bet, are the hosts.
If somebody has put the local dogcatcher on their list, they're unlikely to get points. It's not too hard a decision.
And if somebody raises a stink about this game, we're probably seeing the final time it'll be played around here.

I don't know if anyone has this man on their list, but Wolfgang Wagner died on Sunday at the age of 90. Grandson of the composer Richard Wagner, he ran the Bayreuth opera festival with his brother, Wieland, from 1951 until Wieland's death in 1966, after which Wolfgang ran the festival on his own until his retirement in 2008. It's rather unfair to say, as the Guardian obituary does, that his life was most remarkable for its longevity, but it's nevertheless slightly odd to think that this man's grandfather, the colossus of 19th century opera, was born 2 years before the Battle of Waterloo.

I feel rather sorry about hearing of Wolfgang's departure, mainly because I have the new Testament recording of his and his brother's Ring cycle (from '54 I think). Only managed to listen to about 10 mins of said recording, but shall listen to it in his memory
