I don't know if Heaven is the right board for this but did anyone else see that BBC programme about those Franciscan friars in Bradford?

I found it very heart-warming and encouraging. Hence my mentioning it here rather than my usual Purgatorial haunts.

What think ye who saw it?

BBC1, 10.45 on Thursday. Was this national? I thought it was a regional programme. Should still be on iPlayer.

I thought their mixture of social care and evangelism motivated by love is something that I have always aim at and never achieved.

Those friars are a part of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, an order that arose out of the Capuchin branch of the Franciscans. I've been a fan of them for a long time. Here is their main website: http://franciscanfriars.com .

The link to the programme doesn't work outside of the UK, but I looked at the website and for this community to have grown from eight friars in 1987 to 120 friars today shows steady growth and commitment. Great outreach to the poor.

Yes it was really good. The friars were good humoured and realistic about what they were doing.

Yes, and there was something about it that didn't topple over into the culty or extreme - even though their appearance and lifestyle is very different.

I loved the bit where the brother explains the practicality and significance of the habit - the three knots to symbolise poverty, chastity and obedience and the way it forms the shape of a cross if you stretch our your arms - then how the hood can help to shield you as you withdraw to be with God - before demonstrating how it can also be used to stash biscuits (cookies) away from the gaze of the other monks ...
