Bastard, bastard, bastard guess-o-meter; I would have had 10/10 today but changed an instinctive answer for one based on the SneakyFactor + guess-o-meter calibration.
For earlier readers, the device in question is indeed something pertinent to the USA, although they can be had in Blighty too. It's a foolish gizmo, essentially a toy. I think it's one of those cultural things one is simply supposed to know from having consumed sufficient American fiction and cinema.
