I'm not sure I understand the scoring system on this quiz malarkey. It says on this page that I earned +7 today and my score is 955. It says on yesterday's scores page that I scored +9 points and my score was 954.

How does adding +7 to 954 give 955? [Confused] Is the "score" column not a cumulative score? If not, what does +7 mean? +7 what (or what +7)?

That's something I can answer, Teekeey Misha, unlike quiz questions about 'Murrican rock groups and movies. Regardless of the fact that I'm 'Murrican. [Roll Eyes]

The score is 1000 points minus how ever many seconds you take to answer ten questions correctly. If you only get nine questions correct, your score is 1000 minus your time plus 100. Eight correct answers is 1000 minus your time plus 200.

The award is based on the number of people playing on a particular day. For instance, today there are 13 people so far. So, top person gets all 13 points. I'm not sure what the formula is for figuring the rest of the points, but both today and yesterday had 13 players, and the award point spread is the same for both days.

Does this help?

I think it does; the key is that "score" is a daily score, not a cumulative one? Thank you.

Today, three of my random guesses were incorrect but four were correct. Should I be worried that there were only three answers I actually knew?

Not at all, TM - it sometimes happens that way . Today, I had two right guesses and two splats (American TV and popular music are not my speciality). [Big Grin]

And it's very rare for nobody to get 10/10.

I was a bit rubbish today, but I still made it to seventh place, and the questions I got wrong were both about Americans I'd never heard of, so I'm not going to feel too bad. [Big Grin]

From my experience (and I think I was in the quiz right from the off), if there is an "all of these" option it's more often than not the right one.

A couple of lucky guesses (thank you Guessometer - have a wee dram!) and a couple not so lucky.

Second place with only 8/10? That'll do nicely (not that it'll last ...)

The editors really ought to update their information - in the blurb on question 8 they say that Queen Victoria is the longest-reigning British monarch, which she isn't.

I have spent some time on the general site and there are a lot of questions which are all set by site users as individual questions or part of a themed quiz. A volunteer host must approve all of these before they are allowed in to the question pool from which our quizzes (and plenty of others) are chosen randomly. To maintain all of the questions where the facts might fall out of date would be pretty time-consuming and probably beyond the small army of unpaid hosts. If someone takes a quiz they can report an inaccuracy to the quiz writer who may or may not make a correction - if they are still involved on the site at all. There are guidelines for setting questions which suggest avoiding facts which might fall out of date but it it will still happen and some people's attempts not to fall into this trap become quite tortuous to read. It can be interesting to see this and think to yourself "Oh, yes, she was the longest ruling at one time".

To quote our IT department: it's a feature.
